A virtual reality technology for multipurpose numerical simulation is developed to reproduce and investigate a variety of ocean environmental problems in a 3D-Numerical Wave Tank. The governing equations for solving incompressible fluid motion are Navier-Stokes equation and continuity equation, and the Marker-Density function technique is adopted to implement the fully-nonlinear free-surface kinematic condition. The marine environmental situations, i.e. waves, currents, wind, etc., are reproduced by use of multi-segmented wavemaker on the basis of the so-called "snake-principle". In this paper, some numerical reproduction techniques for regular and irregular waves, multi-directional waves, Bull's-eye wave, wave-current, and solitary wave are presented, and a model test in motion with large amplitude of roll angle is conducted in the developed 3D-NWT, using a overlaid grid system.
This study is to investigate the variation characteristics of run-up height over sandy beach due to the plane distribution of submerged breakwaters. In this study, Three-Dimensional numerical model with Large Eddy Simulation, which is able to simulate directly WAve Structure Seabed interaction (hereafter, LES-WASS-3D) has been newly developed. A comparison between the numerical model and existing experimental results was made to verify accuracy of newly proposed LES-WASS-3D model, and showed fairly nice agreement. In addition, based on the LES-WASS-3D model, the variation characteristics of run-up height over sandy beach are discussed with relation to the offshore distance and opening width of submerged breakwaters.
Horizontal forces may form a major part of the loading system for structures supported on pile groups. It is known that during a strong earthquake, the dynamic behavior of a group-pile foundation is related not only to the inertial force coming from the superstructures but also to the deformation of the surrounding ground. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the behaviors of the group-pile foundations and superstructures during major earthquakes. In this paper, numerical simulation of real-scale group-pile foundation subjected to horizontal cyclic loading is conducted by using a program named as DBLEAVES. In the analysis, nonlinear behaviors of ground and piles are described by cyclic mobility model and axial force dependent model (AFD model). The purpose of this paper is to prove availability of the analysis method by comparing numerical results and test results.
A numerical analysis has been conducted in order to simulate the characteristics of complex flow through linear cascades of high performance turbine blade with/without tip clearance by using a pressure-correction based, generalized 3D incompressible Wavier-Stokes CFD code. The development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, leakage vortex, tip vortex within tip clearance, etc. are clearly identified through the present simulation which uses the RNG k-$\varepsilon$ turbulent model with wall function method and a second-order linear upwind scheme for convective terms. The present simulation results are consistent with the generally known tendency that occurs in the blade passage and tip clearance. A 3D model for secondary and leakage flows through turbine cascades with/without tip clearance is also suggested from the present simulation results, including the effects of tip clearance height.
Since the coupling of cavitation modeling with turbulent flow is the difficulty topic, a numerical simulation for two phase flow remains as one of the challenging issues in the society. This research focuses on the development of numerical code to deal with incompressible two phase flow around conical body combined with cavitation model suggested by Kunz et al. with k-e turbulent model. The simulation results are compared to experimental data to verify the validity of the developed code. The calculation results show very good agreement with experimental observations. Also, the calculation of cavitation in cryogenic fluid is being done by implementing the temperature sensitivity in government equations and it is still in the progress. This code have been being further extended to 3D compressible two phase flow for the study on the fluid dynamics around inducers and impellers in turbo pump system.
Flows inside a passenger compartment of a 1/5 scale model vehicle have been simulated by using a general purpose FVM code, TURBO-3D. Three HVAC modes of heating, air-conditioning, and defrosting are simulated by defining three different inlets. Comparisons are made with the published experimental and computational results, giving a good agreement. A method of predicting the defrosting contours on the wind shield is also proposed in the present study, which enables design modifications in design stages.
A 3-D numerical simulation of a buried-channel CCD (Charge Coupled Device) with a deep depletion has been performed to investigate its electrical and physical behaviors. Results are presented for a deep depletion CCD (EEV CCD12; JET-X CCD) fabricated on a high-resistivity $(1.5k\Omega-cm)\;65{\mu}m$ thick epi-layer, on a $550{\mu}m$ thick p+ substrate, which is optimized for X-ray detection. Accurate predictions of the Potential minimum and barrier height of a CCD Pixel as a function of mobile electrons are found to give good charge transfer. The depletion depth approximation as a function of gate and substrate bias voltage provided average errors of less than 6%, compared with the results estimated from X-ray detection efficiency measurements. The result obtained from the transient simulation of signal charge movement is also presented based on 3-Dimensional analysis.
Even though submerged breakwater reduces incident wave energy, it redistributes the coastal area's wave-induced current, sediment transport, and morphological change. This study examines the coastal hydrodynamics and the morphological response of a wave-dominated beach with submerged breakwaters installed through field observation and quasi-3D numerical modeling. The pre-and post-storm bathymetry, water level, and offshore wave under storm forcing were collected in Bongpo Beach on the East coast of Korea and used to analyze the coastal hydrodynamic response. Four vertically equidistant layers were used in the numerical simulation, and the wave-induced current was examined using quasi-3D numerical modeling. The shore normal incident wave (east-northeast) generated strong cross-shore and longshore currents toward the hinterland of the submerged breakwater. However, the oblique incident wave (east-southeast) induced the southeastward longshore current and the sedimentation in the northeast area of the beach. The results suggested that the incident wave direction is a significant factor in determining the current and sediment transport patterns in the presence of the submerged breakwaters. Moreover, the quasi-3D numerical modeling is more appropriate for estimating the wave transformation, current, and sediment transport pattern in the coastal area with the submerged breakwater.
This study shows a numerical method to predict automobile type air conditioner tube connector in the forming process. The simulation approach with 3-D FEM program(ABAQUS) for forming process, forming process simulation is in good agrement with it in tendency. Finally, we compared the forming result with simulation. The result of research showed thai forming process technology is promising to produce automobile type air conditioner tube connector.
