A Three-Dimensional Simulation of Kori-1 Core by Nodal Method

  • The KINS (KAERI-Improved Nodal Simulation) program, a three-dimensional nodal simulation code for pressurized water reactors, has been developed and benchmarked against the first cycle of the Kori-1 reactor. The KINS program is based on the computational model used in FLARE code and has been modified to represent the PWR characteristics more explicitly. The critical boron concentration and three-dimensional power distribution at the beginning of life hot zero power have been calculated and compared with the operating data. A three-dimensional depletion calculation at the intervals of 1000 MWD/MTU turnup steps has been performed. As the result of comparison, our calculation is shown to be in excellent agreement with the operating data. It is displayed that, incorporated with the computing time, the KINS program is an effective and powerful tool for PWR core management.

A Numerical Study of Radiation Effect under Smoke Movement in Room Fire (실내화재에서 연기거동에 미치는 복사영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구)

  • This paper describes the smoke movement of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP(Smoke Movement Estimating Program) code to the simulation of fire induced flows in the two types of compartment space containing the radiation effect under smoke movement in room fire. The SMEP using PISO algorithm solves conservation equations for mass, momentum, energy and species, together with those for the modified k-$\varepsilon $ turbulence model with buoyancy term. Also it solves the radiation equation using the discrete ordinates method. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown reasonable agreement compared with the experimental data. On the other hand, a difference of a lot was found between the temperature predicted by the SMEP with only convection effect and obtained by the experimental result. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire may be necessary in order to produce more realistic result.

  • This paper describes the smoke filling process of a fire field model based on a self-developed SMEP (Smoke Movement Estimating Program) codo to the simulation of fire induced flows in the atrium space (SIVANS atrium at Japan) containing smoke radiation effect. The result of the calculated smoke temperature containing radiation effect has shown a better prediction than the result calculated by only convection effect in comparison with the experimental data. This seems to come from the radiation effect of $H_2$O and $CO_2$ gas under smoke productions. Thus, the consideration of the radiation effect under smoke in fire should be necessary in order to get more realistic result. Also the numerical results indicated that the smoke layer is developing at a rate of about 0.1 m/s. It would take about 450 seconds after starting the ultra fast fire of 560 kW that the smoke layer move down to 1.5m above the escape level.

  • Predicting the engine component temperature is a basic step to conduct structural safety evaluation in medium-speed diesel engine design. Recent trends such as increasing power density and performance necessitate more effective thermal management of the engine for achieving the desired durability and reliability. In addition, the local temperatures of several engine components must be maintained in the proper range to avoid problems such as low- or high-temperature corrosion. Therefore, it is very important to predict the temperature distribution of each engine part accurately in the design stage. In this study, the temperature of an engine component is calculated by using steady-state conjugate heat transfer analysis. A proper approach to determine the thermal load distribution on the thermal boundary area is suggested by using 1D engine system analysis, 3D transient CFD results, and previous experimental data from another developed engine model. A Hyundai HiMSEN engine having 250-mm bore size was chosen to validate the analysis procedure. The predicted results showed a reasonable agreement with experimental results.

A Study on the Element Technologies in Flame Arrester of End Line (선박의 엔드라인 폭연방지기의 요소기술에 관한 연구)

  • An end-line flame arrester allows free venting in combination with flame protection for vertical vent applications. End-line flame arresters are employed in various fields, especially in shipping. In flame arresters, springs are essential parts because the spring load and the spring's elasticity determine the hood opening moment. In addition, the spring has to work under a high-temperature condition because of the burning gas flame. Therefore, it is necessary to analyze the mechanical load and elasticity of the spring when the flame starts to appear. Based on simulations of the working process of a specific end-line flame arrester, a thermal and structural analysis of the spring is performed. A three-dimensional model of a burned spring is built using computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation. Results of the CFD analysis are input into a finite element method simulation to analyze the spring structure. The research team focused on three cases of spring loads: 43, 93, and 56 kg, correspondingly, at 150 mm of spring deflection. Consequently, the spring load was reduced by 10 kg after 5 min under a $1,000^{\circ}C$ heat condition. The simulation results can be used to predict and estimate the spring's load and elasticity at the burning time variation. Moreover, the obtained outcome can provide the industry with references to optimize the design of the spring as well as that of the flame arrester.
