  • A three-dimensional (3D) intraoral scanner, which is one of the major developments in digital dentistry, is widely used in fixed prosthodontics. The application of intraoral scanner is now increasing in removable prosthodontics. Sclerotic change induced by scleroderma causes the limitation of mouth opening and multiple loss of the teeth. Conventional prosthodontic procedures are challenging for patients with this disease. This study showed a case of digital approach to the removable prosthodontic treatment of a patient who had the scleroderma and the consequent microstomia. At the provisional stage, the optical impression of patient's oral structures was digitally obtained. Using a 3D printer, the provisional dentures were fabricated. After extraction of hopeless tooth, the definitive digital impression was taken and the metal frameworks were fabricated, based on the data acquired from the impression. The definitive removable partial dentures were completed and delivered to the patient, who was satisfied with the prostheses.

  • It is very important to effectively obtain the information related to the human body shape for user-centered design. The human body shape is a huge combination of various irregular curves and is typically obtained by a 3-D Scanner. 3-D scanners show high reliability; however, they are expnsive equipment with limited mobility. 3-D models of irregular-shaped curves were created by a photogrammetric approach and the errors between the original curve and the models were evaluated. 3-D models were created based on 160, 80, 40, 20, 10, and 5 marking points evenly located on the original curve. In the case of convex curve, low levels of residuals were observed in the models from 160, 80, 40, and 20 marking points (0.13% max). In the combination of convex and concave curves, relatively low levels of residuals were observed in the models from 160, 80, and 40 marking points (0.29%). It is possible to conclude that marking points should be placed at every 5% of overall length of a convex curve and at every 2.5% of overall length of a curve with convex and concave curve in order to maintain low levels of errors. A photogrammetric approach can be used as an alternative for the 3-D scanners with advantages of low cost and mobility.

  • The aim of this study was to compare the morphological characteristics of two types of stainless steel permanent molar crowns using three-dimensional scanners and the morphological changes of these crowns after crimping. Two types of stainless steel permanent molar crowns, PO-96 and PERMACROWN were scanned using three-dimensional scanner. Crown size, crown index (ratio of buccolingual diameter to mesiodistal diameter at height of contour), cervical convergency of crown were measured. Stainless steel crowns were crimped and re-scanned with three-dimensional scanner. Morphological changes of stainless steel permanent molar crowns were analyzed. As for the crown index, maxillary PERMACROWN was larger buccolingually and smaller mesiodistally than maxillary PO-96 and mandibular PERMACROWN was smaller buccolingually and larger mesiodistally than mandibular PO-96. Maxillary PO-96 was more convergent to cervical mesiodistally than maxillary PERMACROWN and mandibular PO-96 was more convergent to the cervical mesiodistally, buccolingually than mandibular PERMACROWN. Both types of stainless steel permanent molar crowns showed reduction of cervical circumference after crimping. Two products were morphologically different in crown size, shape and cervical convergence. Although both types of stainless steel permanent molar crowns are pre-contoured type, additional crimping is needed to achieve better marginal adaptation.

  • A roughing process is the one of most important shoe manufacturing processes. Especially, it is indispensable to manufacture the leather shoes such as dress shoes, safety shoes, golf shoes, etc. The roughing process relies greatly on the operator's skill and experience. Therefore, the automation of roughing process is necessary to establish the improvement of productivity. We are trying to develop the Automatic Roughing Machine controlled by NC. As pre-study to do this, we need to measure the roughing path for NC, because there is no study on this pan and no reference about this. In this study, we proposed the 3-Dimensional Scanner System to measure the roughing path with new concept. The developed 3-D scanner System generates the roughing path using the 3 images obtained from 3 CCD cameras. The experimental results show that the proposed system can measure accurately the roughing path.

  • The technique, which reproduces the figures of objects from measured data of the objects using 3-D laser scanner, is called reverse engineering. Recently, research studies into applications of reverse engineering to rock engineering are increasing in number, in the discontinuity surveys for rock slopes out of man's reach, or rapid discontinuity surveys for wide range areas. For analysis of discontinuity using reverse engineering, a program for processing point clouds data from the 3-D laser scanner, for sampling from these point clouds data, and finally analyzing the discontinuity is needed. However, existing programs rarely have sufficient functions to properly analyze the discontinuities. In this study, a program was developed, which can automatically sample discontinuities from the point clouds data which measured in a rock slope using a 3-D laser scanner, and which can also undertake statistical analysis of the discontinuities. This developed program was verified by the application of discontinuity surveys in a rock slope and a tunnel. By undertaking the discontinuity survey using a 3-D laser scanner and the developed program, the feasibility and rapidity of such surveys is expected to improve in areas out of man's reach in geotechnical surveys. Taking into consideration the fact that the international level of related techniques is at a rudimentary stage, the possibility of prior occupation of a broad market is also expected.
