{{{{ pi 1= { D} over {H } , pi 2= { { DN}^{ { 1} over {2 } } } over { { g}^{ { 1} over { 2} } }, pi 3= { Q} over { { g}^{ { 1} over {2 } } { rho D}^{ { 2} over {6 } } }}}}} 2.
In this study, flow structure in a two-stage centrifugal compressor for a turbo-chiller with the refrigerant, R134a, was numerically investigated at the design point of the compressor using a commercial code. Flow characteristics in the passages of impeller, diffuser and return channel were analyzed in detail including velocity vector, secondary flow, Mach number and pressure contours in blade spanwise and meridional plane for each stage. The estimation on the one-dimensional output from the preliminary design and three-dimensional shape of the impeller blade and the meridional shape of the return channel were performed through the flow analysis, while some numerical schemes and techniques including Multiple Frames of Reference technique, real gas property data and inlet boundary condition changes, which were used in CFD, were compared with their features. The results will be used as reference data for a new design of 3-D impeller shape to improve R134a compressor performance.
This research is to investigate the performance analysis for efficient design with four different inlet angles of the centrifugal pump impeller. Assuming that the rotation speed and exit angle are fixed, Four cases of the centrifugal pumps were numerically analyzed using ANSYS FLUENT. According to the numerical results, head and pump efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees was highest. There is no big difference of efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees compared to the inlet angle 30 degrees. About 15% of efficiency at inlet angle of 20 degrees is higher than inlet angle of 40 degrees and 31% higher than inlet angle oof 50 degrees. Because there is liner functional relationship between speed and flow rate, suction flow rate at inlet angle of 20 degrees is superior to the inlet angle of 30 degrees as much as 0.89%, inlet angle of 40 degrees as 13%, inlet angle of 50 as 28.4%. Head at inlet angle of 20 degrees is superior to the inlet angle of 30 degrees as much as 0.4%, inlet angle of 40 degrees as 2.7%, inlet angle of 50 degrees as 3.2%. There should exist highest efficiency and also optimal design shape at inlet angle of 20 degrees.

In this study, a prediction theory for specific noise that is the overall characteristic of the fan has been proposed. This theory is based on total pressure prediction and broadband noise prediction. The specific noises of two forward curved fans with different number of blades were predicted. The flow around the impeller having 120 blades (MF120) was more biased at a certain positions than the impeller with 40 blades (MF40). An effective domain of the energy conversion of MF40 has extended overall than MF120. The total pressure was affected by the slip factor and pressure loss caused by the vortex flow. The suppression of a major pressure drop by the vortex flow and expansion of the effective domain for energy conversion contributed to an increase in the total pressure of MF40 at the design point. The position of maximum relative velocity was different for each fan. The relative velocity of MF120 was less than that of MF40 due to the deviation angle. The specific noise of MF120 was 2.7 dB less than that of MF40 due to the difference in internal flow. It has been quantitatively estimated that the deceleration in the relative velocity contributed to the improvement in the overall performance.
A design method of Sirocco fan is developed for constructing 3-D impeller and scroll geometries, and for predicting both the aerodynamic performance and the noise characteristics of the designed fan. The aerodynamic blading design of fan is conducted by blade angle, camber line determinations and airfoil thickness distribution, and then the scroll geometry of fan is designed by using logarithmic spiral. The aerodynamic performance of designed fan is predicted by the meanline analysis with flow blockage, slip and pressure loss correlations. Based on the predicted performance data, fan noise is predicted by two models for cutoff frequency and broadband noise sources. The present predictions for the performance and the noise level of actual fans are well agreed with measurement results.
The three-dimensional spatial structures of impeller flow created by a six bladed Rushton turbine have identified based on the volumetric velocity information from multi-plane stereoscopic PIV measurements. A total of 10 planes with 2 mm space with a 50 mm by 64 mm size of the field of view were targeted. To reduce the depth of focus, we adopted an angle offset configuration which satisfied the Scheimpflug condition. The distortion compensation procedure was utilized during the in situ calibration. Phase-locked instantaneous data were ensemble averaged and interpolated in order to obtain mean 3-D, volumetric velocity fields on a 60 degree sector of a cylindrical ring volume enclosing the turbine blade. Using the equi-vorticity surface rendering, the spatial structure of the trailing vortices was clearly demonstrated. Detail flow characteristics of the radial jet reported in previous studies of mixer flows were easily identified.

In this study, a newly developed agitator with hydrofoil impeller applied to actual biological process in advanced wastewater treatment plant was evaluated. Several series of experiments were conducted in two different wastewater treatment plants where actual problems have been occurred such as the production of scums and sludge settling. For more effective evaluation, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and measurements of MLSS (Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids) and DO (Dissolved Oxygen) were used with other measuring equipments. After the installation of one unit of vertical hydrofoil agitator in plant A, scum and sludge settling problems were solved and more than seventy percent of operational energy was saved. In case of plant B, there were three cells of each anoxic and anaerobic tanks, and each cell had one unit of submersible horizontal agitator. After the integration of three cells to one cell in each tank, and installation of one vertical hydrofoil agitator per tank, all the problems caused by improper mixing were solved and more than eighty percent of operational energy was found to be saved. Simple change of agitator applied to biological process in wastewater treatment plant was proved to be essential to eliminate scum and sludge settling problems and to save input energy.
This paper describes aerodynamic preliminary design performance prediction and flow analysis for centrifugal compressor of the marine middle engine turbocharger. The performance characteristics of turbocharger compressor are investigated at various operating conditions using mass flow rate and revolution speed, and computational flow analysis for impeller and diffuser at design point are performed. Preliminary design results correspond to actual compressor geometric values comparatively by applying modified slip factor. Performance prediction and flow analysis results show good agreement with experiments. Therefore, this will provide the performance prediction in preliminary design, and help to increase the design capability for optimized impeller.
