  • A modular three-phase multilevel inverter especially suitable for electrical drive applications has been previously presented. This topology is based on series connection of power cells in which each cell comprised of two inverter legs in series. In this paper, in order to generate the maximum number of voltage levels with reduced number of switches, three algorithms are proposed for determination of the magnitudes of dc voltage sources. In addition, a new hybrid multilevel inverter is proposed that is composed of series connection of the previously presented multilevel inverter and some H-bridges. The proposed topology has been compared with some other presented multilevel inverters. The performance of the proposed multilevel inverter has been verified by simulation and experimental results of a single-phase 39-level multilevel inverter.

  • A single-phase asymmetrical cascaded multilevel inverter is introduced with the goal of increasing power quality with the reduction of power in insulated-gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) switches. In the present work, the proposed inverter topology is analyzed and generalized with respect to different proposed algorithms for choosing different voltage source values. To prove the advantages of the proposed inverter, a case study involving a 17-level inverter is conducted. The simulation and experimental results with reduced THD are also presented and compared with the MATLAB/SIMULINK simulation results. Finally, the proposed topology is compared with different multilevel inverter topologies available in the literature in terms of the number of IGBT switches required with respect to the number of levels generated in the output of inverter topologies.

  • This paper presents the over-modulation strategy and indirect vector control drive of NPC type PWM inverter. NPC inverter has three level phase voltage output. It can perform in high voltage through assembling switching components. It has less harmonics and surge voltage stress at motor terminals than the 2 level inverter in same switching frequency through 3 level voltage. The conventional railway vehicle has used the vector control to MI=0.907 and the slip-frequency control from MI=0.907 to six-step mode. The slip-frequency control has bad motive power and slow torque control response. But vector control has good motive power and can instant torque control. In this paper, output voltage is controlled linearly from linear region to six-step mode by using over-modulation strategy. And NPC inverter is used.

  • The PWM inverter investigated in this paper utilizes a bridge type current sharing reactor circuit with tow pairs of complementary transistor at each phase. The driving signals for this inverter are 3 level PWM waves of W type an M type modulation, which are obtained from a microprocessor based on the switching time data obtained by switching position calculation of triangular and sine modulation wave. The output voltage waveforms of this inverter have 5 level phase voltage and 9 level line voltage of PWM. The harmonics of the output voltage are reduced to half when it is compared with single CTI, and the occurrence of harmonics is also reduced.

  • Current source inverter drives of auto sequentially commutated type are very popular in high power applications, because of simple power circuit configuration with four quadrant operation. But the six-step current output create harmonic problems and the input power factor of such a drive is not always good. In this respect pulse width modulated drives using gate turn off thyristors ( GTO ) are finding application, especially in traction drives. However the switching and snubber loses of a GTO do not permit the inverter switching frequency go beyond a few hundred hertz. This will again introduce low frequency harmonic problems. Multi level inverters of the 3-level and 5-level can be considered as an alternative to overcome the low switching frequency harmonic problem of the 2-level GTO inverters. But with multi level inverters the complexity of the power circuit increases. In this paper a combination of multi level ( 2-level and 3-level ) inverters and multi phase induction motor ( 3-phase and 6-phase) configurations are presented for high power VSI drives for traction applications with reduced inverter switching frequency requirements coupled with reduced voltage rating for the power switch.

  • The inverter using level control block (LCB) was developed to drive LCD TV backlight using FFL light source. The FFL striking time, time for brightness stabilization, and lamp current of FFL backlight were shown to improve by applying LCB in the inverter. It was also shown that the stable driving of LCD TV FFL backlight with the inverter using LCB was possible over the wide temperature range.

  • This study proposes a neutral voltage balance control scheme for stable fault-tolerant operation of an active neutral point clamped (ANPC) inverter using carrier-based pulse width modulation. The proposed scheme maintains the neutral voltage balance by reconfiguring the switching combination and modulating the reference output voltage in order to solve the degradation of the output characteristic in the fault tolerant operation due to the fault of the power semiconductor switch constituting the ANPC inverter. The feasibility of the proposed control scheme is confirmed by HIL experiment using RT-BOX.

  • In this paper, a carrier-based pulse with modulation (PWM) strategy for three-phase three-level inverter is dealt with, which can keep the common mode voltage constant with minimized switching frequency. The voltage gain and the switching frequency in overall operating ranges including overmodulation are investigated and the analytic equations are presented. Finally, the leakage current reduction effect is confirmed by carrying out simulation and experiment. It will be pointed out that the leakage current cannot be perfectly eliminated because of the dead time.

  • The mathematical model of a three-phase voltage source pulse-width modulation (PWM) DC/AC inverter is non-linear, and in view of the traditional linear control strategy it can not meet the requirements of designing a high-performance inverter. What's more, when the loads are not pure resistive loads, the inverter further requires that the controller possess high-performance. This paper proposes a nonlinear control strategy for the inverter called Passivity-based Control. We can alter the inverter model in three-phase abc coordinate to two-phase synchronous rotating dq coordinate for establishing the port-control Hamiltonian (PCH) model for this system. We can control the distribution of energy in the system to achieve the control aim. Simulation results show that the passivity-based control method can make this system possess a level of high-performance that is both robust and dynamic.

  • This paper proposes a high efficiency three-phase cascaded phase shifted H-bridge multi-level inverter without DC/DC converters for grid-tied multi string photovoltaic (PV) applications. The cascaded H-bridge topology is suitable for PV applications since each PV module can act as a separate DC source for each cascaded H-bridge module. The proposed phase shifted H-bridge multi-level topology offers advantages such as operation at a lower switching frequency and a lower current ripple when compared to conventional two level topologies. It is also shown that low ripple sinusoidal current waveforms are generated with a unity power factor. The control algorithm permits the independent control of each DC link voltage with a maximum power point for each string of PV modules. The use of the controller area network (CAN) communication protocol for H-bridge multi-level inverters, along with localized PWM generation and PV voltage regulation are implemented. It is also shown that the expansion and modularization capabilities of the H-bridge modules are improved since the individual inverter modules operate more independently. The proposed topology is implemented for a three phase 240kW multi-level PV power conditioning system (PCS) which has 40kW H-bridge modules. The experimental results show that the proposed topology has good performance.
