The transmission characteristics of multi-channel long period fiber gratings (LPFGs) in terms of the physical parameters like the separation distance, grating length and number of gratings will be discussed. Their transmission characteristics such as channel spacing, number of channels, loss peak depth, and channel bandwidth can be easily controlled by physical parameters. Based on the experimental results, their applications to optical multiwavelength Raman lasers and optical sensors will be investigated. A multiwavelength Raman fiber ring laser with 9 WDM channels with 100 ㎓ spacing and 19 channels with 50 ㎓ spacing using tunable multi-channel LPFGs will be experimentally demonstrated. The fiber-optic sensing applications with high resolution and sensitivity based on multi-channel LPFGs will be also presented.

In this paper, we consider the secondary users (SUs) who are capable of harvesting energy from ambient radio frequency (RF) signals and are allowed to sequentially sense up to 2 different channels to find out idle channels not occupied by the primary users (PUs). The EH SUs are permitted to transmit data packets only if both idle channels and sufficient energy are available. Compared with traditional SUs, the EH SUs consume energy with data transmission and also harvest energy without additional energy supply. Consequently, the battery state is expected to be fluctuated due to energy consumption and harvesting, and therefore we develop a Markov battery model to provide energy variations at the 2-channel sensing EH SUs. With the proposed battery model, we derive the steady-state probability that the EH SUs completely run out of energy, and the achievable throughput of EH SUs is derived accordingly. To evaluate the proposed Markov battery model, the Monte-Carlo simulation was performed to validate the accuracy of energy outage probability and achievable throughput at the 2-channel sensing EH SUs.
The scheme for recognizing the channel availability is one of the most important research issues in cognitive radio systems utilizing unused frequency bands. In this paper, we propose a novel scheme of selecting sensing channel in order to improve the sensing ability of frequency status in cognitive radio ad hoc networks. To fully exploit the sensing ability of each cognitive radio user, we adopt a master for a cluster which is made of several cognitive radio users. By gathering and analyzing the sensing information from cognitive radio users in the cluster, the cooperative sensing is realized. Since the transmission range of a licensed user is limited, it is possible that a master determines different sensing channels to each cognitive radio users based on their location. By making cognitive radio users sense different channels, the proposed scheme can recognize the state of wireless spectrum fast and precisely. Using the simulation, we compare the performance of the proposed scheme with those of two different compared schemes that one makes cognitive radio users recognize the frequency status based on their own sensing results and the other shares frequency status information but does not utilize the location information of licensed user. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme provides available channels as many as possible while detecting the activation of licensed user immediately.
Multi-Spectral Camera(MSC) is a main payload on the KOMPSAT-2 satellite to perform the earth remote sensing. The MSC instrument has one(1) channel for panchromatic imaging and four(4) channel for multi-spectral imaging covering the spectral range from 450nm to 900nm using TDI CCD Focal Plane Array (FPA). The compression method on KOMPSAT-2 MSC was selected and used to match EOS input rate and PDTS output data rate on MSC image data chain. At once the MSC performance was carefully handled to minimize any degradation so that it was analyzed and restored in KGS(KOMPSAT Ground Station) during LEOP and Cal./Val.(Calibration and Validation) phase. In this paper, on-orbit image data chain in MSC and image data processing on KGS including general MSC description is briefly described. The influences on image performance between on-board compression algorithms and between performance restoration methods in ground station are analyzed and discussed.
A typhoon center location and its intensity from the 54.96GMz channel of Microwave Sounding Unit(MSU) on board the NOAA satellite is analyzed. NOAA satellite MSU channel 3 data may delineate the development and dissipation of the upper tropospheric warm core associated with a typhoon. The typhoon warm core is related to microwave imagery of 250hPa temperature field (54.96GMz). The typhoon center intensity, surface center pressure and maximum wind speed at the eye well, correlate to horozontal Laplacian of an upper tropospheric temperature field. The typhoon center is found from the analysis of 250hPa temperature field. The excellent correlation is found between the horizontal Laplacian of an tropospheric temperature field and surface maximum wind speed, another correlation is found between the warm temperature anomaly and surface pressure anomaly.

This study proposes a novel optical sensor structure based on a refractometer combining a bend waveguide with an air trench. The optical sensor is a $1{\times}2$ splitter structure with a reference channel and a sensing channel. The reference channel has a straight waveguide. The sensing channel consists of a U-bend waveguide connecting four C-bends, and a trench structure to partially expose the core layer. The U-bend waveguide consists of one C-bend with the maximum optical loss and three C-bends with minimum losses. A trench provides a quantitative measurement environment and is aligned with the sidewall of the C-bend having the maximum loss. The intensity of the output power depends on the change in the refractive index of the measured material. The insertion loss of the proposed optical sensor changes from 3.7 dB to 59.1 dB when the refractive index changes from 1.3852 to 1.4452.

In cognitive radio technology, the overall efficiency of communications systems can be improved without allocating additional bands by allowing a secondary system to utilize the licensed band when the primary system, which has the right to use the band, does not use it. In this paper, we propose a fast and reliable common channel initialization protocol without any exchange of initialization messages between the cluster head and the member nodes in cognitive ad-hoc networks. In the proposed method, the cluster and member nodes perform channel-based spectrum sensing. After sensing, the cluster head transmits a system activation signal through its available channels with a predetermined angle difference pattern. To detect the cluster head's transmission channels and to join the cluster, each member node implements fast Fourier transform (FFT) and computes autocorrelation for the angle difference sequence of the received signal patterns. This is compared to the predetermined reference angle difference pattern. The join-request and channel-decision procedures are presented in this paper. Performance evaluation of the proposed method is presented in the simulation results.
The first geostationary satellite in Korea, COMS (Communication, Ocean, and Meteorological Satellite), has been operating properly since its successful completion of the IOT (In Orbit Test). COMS MI (Meteorological Imager) acquires Earth observation images from visible and infrared channels. This paper describes a method to compute the degradation of the COMS visible detectors and the result of the degradation during the two years of the operation. The visible channel detectors' performance was determined based on the comparison between the instrument-based measurements and ROLO model-based values. The degradation rate of the visible channel detectors of COMS MI showed a normal condition.
A statistical correlation between cloud thickness and brightness is shown by regression analysis using the least-square method. Cloud thicknesses are obtained from radiosonde observation. Brightness values are obtained from GMS visible channel. Regression analyses are preformed on both thickness data used in conjunction with brightness data for summer season. The results are shown by the regression curve relating thickness and brightness accounting for 79% of variance. And the relationship between thickness and precipitable water in the cloud layers is analyzed. The thickness shows a positive correlation with precipitable water in cloudy layers.
In this paper, we consider a cognitive radio system operating as secondary user. It uses an empty channel that is not currently used by primary users having the license to the channel. In the previous works, secondary user looks for an empty channel by choosing any channel in order or randomly and by sensing the channel to distinguish whether primary users are using. But if primary user is fixed type, we will find an empty channel faster than the mentioned channel selecting methods by using a method considering prior information about cases that primary user used the channel, since it is possible to analogize the channel access possibility of primary user according to regular time and position. Therefore, we propose a channel searching method based on the channel list for the purpose of reducing the channel searching time and improving throughput of secondary users. Firstly, we determine a weighting value of each channel based on the history of channel activities of primary users. This value is added to current channel state buffer and we search an empty channel from channel with smallest value to one with the biggest value. Finally, we compare the performances of the proposed method with those of the sequential channel searching and the random channel searching methods in terms of the average channel searching time and the average number of transmissions of secondary user.
