This study presents both experimental and numerical investigation of ignition characteristics of n-heptane and n-butanol mixture. The $O_2$ concentration was fixed to 9-10% to make high exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) rate condition. Experiments were performed using a rapid compression machine. In addition, a numerical study of the ignition delay time was performed using CHEMKIN codes to validate experimental results and predict chemical species after combustion process. The results showed that the ignition delay time increased with increasing n-butanol ratio and the reactivity decreased by low $O_2$ concentration.
An extractive fermentation process using pervaporation was studied in a 7 liter fermentor. Pervaporation was performed using a silicone membrane module and a low-acid-producing strain Clostridium acetobutylicu, B18 was used to produce butanol. In batch culture without pervaporation pH 5.5 and initial glucose concentration of 60 g/L resulted in the highest butanol productivity (0.216 g/L$.$h) with butanol yield of 0.261 Butanol flux through the membrane was best at 2.0 L/min-tubing of air flow rate In batch and fed-batch fermentation glucose consumption rate increased by 1.3 times with pervaporation.
The present study was undertaken in order to elucidate the effect of ginseng butanol fraction on ethanol induced hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity in rat. Ginseng butanol fraction increased the hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity which is inhibited by ethanol addition in the enzyme assay system, whereas not shown the ginseng effect in ethanol absence condition in vitro. It was found that ginseng butanol fraction improved the affinity of aniline hydroxylase under presence of ethanol in the reaction mixture. On the contrary ginseng butanol fraction showed significant decreasing effect on aniline hydroxylase activity induced by ethanol administration. These results suggest that ginseng butanol fraction regulate the hepatic aniline hydroxylase activity which is induced by ethanol consumption.

The solvent-tolerant bacterium Enterobacter sp. VKGH12 is capable of utilizing n-butanol and contains an $NAD^+$-dependent n-butanol dehydrogenase (BDH). The BDH from n-butanol-grown Enterobacter sp. was purified from a cell-free extract (soluble fraction) to near homogeneity using a 3-step procedure. The BDH was purified 15.37-fold with a recovery of only 10.51, and the molecular mass estimated to be 38 kDa. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant ($K_m$) for the BDH was found to be 4 mM with respect to n-butanol. The BDH also had a broad range of substrate specificity, including primary alcohols, secondary alcohols, and aromatic alcohols, and exhibited an optimal activity at pH 9.0 and $40^{\circ}C$. Among the metal ions studied, $Mg^{2+}$ and $Mn^{2+}$ had no effect, whereas $Cu^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}$, and $Fe^{2+}$ at 1 mM completely inhibited the BDH activity. The BDH activity was not inhibited by PMSF, suggesting that serine is not involved in the catalytic site. The known metal ion chelator EDTA had no effect on the BDH activity. Thus, in addition to its physiological significance, some features of the enzyme, such as its activity at an alkaline pH and broad range of substrate specificity, including primary and secondary alcohols, are attractive for application to the enzymatic conversion of alcohols.
The autoignition temperatures(AIT) of solvent mixture is important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. Therefore, the AITs of common pure chemical substances are widely reported, but very limited data are available for mixtures. This study, the toluene and 2-butnaol system which used mixture solution solvent was measured the AIT and ignition delay time by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of toluene and 2-butanol constituted binary system were $547^{\circ}C$ and $400^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AIT of toluene and 2-butanol were a good agreement with the calculated AIT by the proposed equations with a few average absolute deviation(A.A.D.).
To investigate the antioxidant activities of Pinus densiflora needle (Pinaceae), which is widely used as a traditional medicine in Korea, Caenorhabditis elegans model system was used. The n-butanol fraction of P. densiflora needle methanol extract showed the most potent DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide quenching activities in a dose-dependent manner. The n-butanol fraction was measured for the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase, and oxidative stress tolerance by using C. elegans with reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. In addition, to see that the regulation of the stress response gene is responsible for the increased stress tolerance of C. elegans treated by the butanol extract, SOD-3 expression was measured using a transgenic strain. As a result, the P. densiflora needle n-butanol fraction increased SOD and catalase activities, and decreased ROS accumulation, dose-dependently. Furthermore, the n-butanol fraction-treated CF1553 worm showed higher SOD-3::GFP intensity than the control.
Flash point is the important indicator to determine fire and explosion hazards of liquid solutions. In this study, flash points of n-propanol+n-hexanol and n-butanol+n-hexanol systems were obtained by Seta flash tester. The methods based on UNIFAC equation and multiple regression analysis were used to calculate flash point. The calculated flash point was compared with the experimental flash point. Absolute average errors of flash points calculated by UNIFAC equation are $2.9^{\circ}C$ and $0.6^{\circ}C$ for n-propanol+n-hexanol and n-butanol+n-hexanol, respectively. Absolute average errors of flash points calculated by multiple regression analysis are $0.5^{\circ}C$ and $0.2^{\circ}C$ for n-propanol+ n-hexanol and n-butanol+n-hexanol, respectively. As can be seen from AAE, the values calculated by multiple regression analysis are noticed to be better than the values by the method based on UNIFAC eauation.
