A kinetic study is reported for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 4-pyridyl X-substituted benzoates 7a-e with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in H2O. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reactions of 4-pyridyl benzoate 7c is linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.71. The corresponding reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 6, which is less reactive than 7c, resulted in also a linear Br${\o}$nsted-type plot with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.77. The fact that the more reactive 7c results in a smaller ${\beta}_{nuc}$ value appears to be in accord with the reactivity-selectivity principle. The aminolysis of 7c has been suggested to proceed through a stepwise mechanism in which breakdown of the intermediate is the rate-determining step (RDS). The Hammett plot for the reactions of 7a-e with piperidine consists of two intersecting straight lines, i.e., ${\rho}_X$ = 1.47 for substrates possessing an electron-donating group (EDG) and ${\rho}_X$ = 0.91 for those possessing an electron-withdrawing group (EWG). In contrast, the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot exhibits excellent linear correlation with ${\rho}_X$ = 0.79 and r = 0.56. Thus, it has been concluded that the nonlinear Hammett plot is not due to a change in the RDS but is caused by stabilization of the ground state of the substrates possessing an EDG through resonance interaction between the EDG and the C=O bond of the substrates.
A kinetic study is reported on nucleophilic displacement reactions of benzyl 2-pyridyl carbonate 6 with alkalimetal ethoxides, EtOM (M = Li, Na, and K), in anhydrous ethanol at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The plots of pseudo-firstorder rate constant $k_{obsd}$ vs. [EtOM] curve upward, a typical phenomenon reported previously for alkaline ethanolysis of esters in which alkali-metal ions behave as a Lewis-acid catalyst. The kobsd value for the reaction of 6 with a fixed EtOK concentration decreases rapidly upon addition of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6), a complexing agent for $K^+$ ion up to [18C6]/[EtOK] = 1.0 and then remains constant thereafter, indicating that the catalytic effect exerted by K+ ion disappears in the presence of excess 18C6. The reactivity of EtOM towards 6 increases in the order $EtO^-$ < EtOLi < EtONa < EtOK, which is contrasting to the reactivity order reported for the corresponding reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 4, i.e., $EtO^-$ < EtOK < EtONa < EtOLi. Besides, 6 is 1.7 and 3.5 times more reactive than 4 towards dissociated $EtO^-$ and ion-paired EtOK, respectively. The reactivity difference and the contrasting metal-ion selectivity are discussed in terms of electronic effects and transition-state structures.
Pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) have been measured for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2-pyridyl benzoate 5 with alkali metal ethoxides (EtOM, M = Li, Na, K) in anhydrous ethanol. The plots of $k_{obsd}$ vs. $[EtOM]_o$ are curved upwardly but linear in the excess presence of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) with significant decreased $k_{obsd}$ values in the reaction with EtOK. The $k_{obsd}$ value for the reaction of 5 with a given EtONa concentration decreases steeply upon addition of 15-crown-5-ether (15C5) to the reaction medium up to ca. [15C5]/$[EtONa]_o$ = 1, and remains nearly constant thereafter, indicating that $M^+$ ions catalyze the reaction in the absence of the complexing agents. Dissection $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$- and $k_{EtOM}$, i.e., the second-order rate constants for the reaction with the dissociated $EtO^-$ and the ion-paired EtOM, respectively has revealed that ion-paired EtOM is 3.2 - 4.6 times more reactive than dissociated $EtO^-$. It has been concluded that $M^+$ ions increase the electrophilicity of the reaction center through a 6-membered cyclic transition state. This idea has been examined from the corresponding reactions of 4-pyridyl benzoate 6, which cannot form such a 6-membered cyclic transition state.
Hydrothermal reactions of Ni(NO₃)₂· 6H₂O with trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethylene (bipyen), in the presence of a linear 2,6-naphthalene dicarboxylic acid (NDCH₂) and a bent 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBCH₂), gave a 2-D coordination polymer [Ni(NDC)(bipyen)(H₂O)] (1) and also a 2-D coordination polymer [Ni(OBC)(bipyen)]· H₂O (2), respectively. A reversible de-coordination and re-coordination of an aqua ligand was observed for polymer 1. Polymer 2 has an undulated 2-D network based on 50-membered rectangular grids, each of which has the dimension of 13.61 × 13.17 Å.

The hydrothermal reaction of Co(NO₃)₂ㆍ6H₂O, trans-1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene (bipyen), and a bent 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBCH₂) gave a 2-D coordination polymer [Co(OBC)(bipyen)]ㆍH₂O(1). X-ray structure determination revealed that polymer 1 has a 2-D network based on 50-membered rectangular grids, each of which has the dimension of 13.74×13.20Å.
Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for the reactions of phenyl 2- pyridyl carbonate (6) with a series of cyclic secondary amines in MeCN at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The Br${\o}$nsted-type plot for the reaction of 6 is linear with ${\beta}_{nuc}$ = 0.54, which is typical for reactions reported previously to proceed through a concerted mechanism. Substrate 6 is over $10^3$ times more reactive than 2-pyridyl benzoate (5), although the reactions of 6 and 5 proceed through the same mechanism. A combination of steric hindrance, inductive effect and resonance contribution is responsible for the kinetic results. The reactions of 6 and 5 proceed through a cyclic transition state (TS) in which H-bonding interactions increase the nucleofugality of the leaving group (i.e., 2-pyridiniumoxide). The enhanced nucleofugality forces the reactions of 6 and 5 to proceed through a concerted mechanism. In contrast, the corresponding reaction of 4-nitrophenyl 2-pyridyl carbonate (7) proceeds through a stepwise mechanism with quantitative liberation of 4-nitrophenoxide ion as the leaving group, indicating that replacement of the 4-nitrophenoxy group in 7 by the PhO group in 6 changes the reaction mechanism (i.e., from a stepwise mechanism to a concerted pathway) as well as the leaving group (i.e., from 4-nitrophenoxide to 2-pyridiniumoxide). The strong electron-withdrawing ability of the 4-nitrophenoxy group in 7 inhibits formation of a H-bonded cyclic TS. The presence or absence of a H-bonded cyclic TS governs the reaction mechanism (i.e., a concerted or stepwise mechanism) as well as the leaving group (i.e., 2-pyridiniumoxide or 4-nitrophenoxide).
Second-order rate constants ($k_N$) have been measured spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2-pyridyl X-substituted benzoates 8a-e with a series of alicyclic secondary amines in $H_2O$ at $25.0{\pm}0.1^{\circ}C$. The $k_N$ values for the reactions of 8a-e are slightly smaller than the corresponding reactions of 4-nitrophenyl X-substituted benzoates 1a-e (e.g., $kN^{1a-e}/k_N^{8a-e}$ = 1.1 ~ 3.1), although 2-pyridinolate in 8a-e is ca. 4.5 $pK_a$ units more basic than 4-nitrophenolate in 1a-e. The Br$\o$nsted-type plot for the aminolysis of 8c (X = H) is linear with $\beta_{nuc}$ = 0.77 and $R^2$ = 0.991 (Figure 1), which is typical for reactions reported previously to proceed through a stepwise mechanism with breakdown of a zwitterionic tetrahedral intermediate $T^{\pm}$ being the rate-determining step (RDS), e.g., aminolysis of 4-nitrophenyl benzoate 1c. The Hammett plot for the reactions of 8a-e with piperidine consists of two intersecting straight lines (Figure 2), i.e., $\rho$ = 1.71 for substrates possessing an electron-donating group (EDG) while $\rho$ = 0.86 for those bearing an electron-withdrawing group (EWG). Traditionally, such a nonlinear Hammett plot has been interpreted as a change in RDS upon changing substituent X in the benzoyl moiety. However, it has been proposed that the nonlinear Hammett is not due to a change in RDS since the corresponding Yukawa-Tsuno plot exhibits excellent linear correlation with $\rho$ = 0.85 and r = 0.62 ($R^2$ = 0.995, Figure 3). Stabilization of substrates 8a-e in the ground state has been concluded to be responsible for the nonlinear Hammett plot.
A kinetic study on nucleophilic displacement reactions of 2-pyridyl X-substituted benzoates 1a-e with potassium ethoxide (EtOK) in anhydrous ethanol is reported. Plots of pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_{obsd}$) vs. $[EtOK]_o$ exhibit upward curvature. The $k_{obsd}$ value at a fixed $[EtOK]_o$ decreases steeply upon addition of 18-crown-6-ether (18C6) to the reaction mixture up to [18C6]/$[EtOK]_o$ = 1 and then remains nearly constant thereafter. In contrast, $k_{obsd}$ increases sharply upon addition of LiSCN or KSCN. Dissection of $k_{obsd}$ into $k_{EtO^-}$ and $k_{EtOM}$ has revealed that ion-paired EtOK is more reactive than dissociated $EtO^-$, indicating that $K^+$ ion acts as a Lewis acid catalyst. Hammett plots for the reactions of 1a-e with dissociated $EtO^-$ and ion-paired EtOK result in excellent linear correlation with $\rho$ values of 3.01 and 2.67, respectively. The $k_{EtOK}/k_{EtO^-}$ ratio increases as the substituent X in the benzoyl moiety becomes a stronger electron-donating group. $K^+$ ion has been concluded to catalyze the current reaction by stabilizing the transition state through formation of a 6-membered cyclic complex.
A long, bis(monodentate), linking Schiff-base ligand L (py-CH=N-$C_6H_4$-N=CH-py) was prepared from 1,4-phenylenediamine and 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde by the Schiff-base condensation. Ligand L has two terminal pyridyl groups capable of coordinating to metals through their nitrogen atoms. In contrast, the same reaction between 1,2-phenylenediamine and 3-pyridinecarboxaldehyde produced a mixture of imidazol isomers (2-pyridin-3-yl-1H-benzoimidazole), which are connected to one another by the N-H…N hydrogen bonding to form a tetramer. From Zn($NO_3)_2{\cdot}6H_2O$ and ligand L under various conditions, one discrete molecule, trans- [Zn($H_2O)_4L_2]{\cdot}(NO_3)_2{\cdot}(MeOH)_2$, and two 1-D zinc polymers, [Zn$(NO_3)(H_2O)_2(L)]{\cdot}(NO_3){\cdot}(H_2O)_2$ and [Zn(L) (OBC)($H_2O$)], were prepared. In ligand L, the N$\ldots$N separation between the terminal pyridyl groups is 13.994 $\AA$, with their nitrogen atoms at the meta positions (3,3’) in a trans manner. The corresponding N$\ldots$N separations in its compounds range from 13.853 to 14.754 $\AA$.
