This study used 3-vinylanisole and 4-vinylanisole with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical characteristics of the copolymerized material showed that the refractive index is 1.4496 - 1.4894, water content 22.93 - 35.50%, visible transmittance 88.8 - 90.8%. Also, measurements showed that the refractive index increased while the water content decreased as the ratio of 3-vinylanisole and 4-vinylanisole increased. And in cases of copolymer with 3-vinylanisole, 4-vinylanisole (added 15%) the results showed transmittance of 52.8 - 82.2%, 13.2 - 26.2% respectively for UV-A and UV-B showing that they have UV-blocking effects. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer can be estimated to be suitable for use as ophthalmic lens material for high refractive index and UV- blocking effects.
The mutually reactive copolymers poly[(vinylbenzyl chloride)-co-(n-butyl acrylate)-co-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] and poly[(4-vinylpyridine)-co-(n-butyl acrylate)-co-(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate)] were synthesized for the humidity sensitive material by forming simultaneous quaternization. The humidity sensor showed an average resistance of 8.6 M$\Omega$, 310 k$\Omega$ and 12 k$\Omega$ at 30%RH, 60%RH and 90%RH, respectively. The hysteresis and temperature coefficient were $\pm$3%RH and -0.37~-0.40%RH/$^{\circ}C$. The introduction of n-BA and HEMA increased the resistance of the humidity sensor however it enhanced the adherence to the alumina substrate. The response time was 54 seconds changing from 33%RH to 85%RH and the difference of resistance was +0.2%RH after soaking in water for 2 hr.
Hydrogel membranes were prepared by copolymerizing 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) and N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone (VP) in the presence of the solvent and the crosslinker tetraethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA). By changing the monomer composition and the crosslinker content, different membranes were synthesized. Using these membranes, relative permeabilities and distribution coefficients for amides including urea were measured. The water contents in membrane were also measured. On the basis of solute-membrane matrix interaction, the results were interpreted.

The transport phenomena of the free amino acids through poly(hydroxyethyl methacrylate)[P(HEMA)] have been investigated with and without various kinds of surfactants solution and in the mixed surfactants solution. Glutamine has the highest diffusivity among 4 amino acids at 1CMC of cetyldimethylethylammonium bromide(CTABr) surfactant. Glutamic acid is not affected by the concentration of CTABr. Methionine and Lysine shows slight decreased diffusivity at 0.5 CMC, but increase its diffusivity at 1CMC and 2CMC due to the structure change of membrane and the viscosity change of surfactant solution. Glutamic acid has the highest diffusivity among four amino acids at sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) and Triton X-100 surfactant. In mixed surfactant solution, each amino acids shows high diffusivity through 45% water content membrane at the 0.5 mole fraction of SDS in the SDS/TX-100 surfactant mixtures. It has been found that not only the property of membrane but also the effects of solute-solvent interactions and solvent effect are very important as the permeation of amino acids occurs through P(HEMA) membrane. The diffusivities of free amino acids through membrane depend upon their molecular shape, size and charge.
Purpose: A hydrogel including alginate and $CaCl_2$ extracted from seaweed was manufactured, and their physical properties were investigated. Also, its applicability as contact lenses was examined. Methods: A film-type sample used in this experiment was manufactured using 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), which is the raw material of hydrogel contact lenses; azobisiobutyonitile (AIBN), which is an initiator and ethylenglycoldimethacrylate (EGDMA), which is a cross-linking agent. It was hydrated in a PBS solution for 24 hours, and an interpenetrating polymer network (IPN) was formed in 1% and 2% alginate and 1%, 3%, and 5% $CaCl_2$ solutions for 24 hours, respectively. Results: The measurement of the physical properties of the film after the IPN showed that the moisture content was 30.89~36.89%, the refractive index was 1.431~1.441, the contact angle was $62.98{\sim}80.45^{\circ}$, and the tensile strength was 2.378~4.215 ($gf/mm^2$). Also, the physical properties hardly changed as the content of alginate increased, and the moisture content decreased as the content of $CaCl_2$ increased. As a result of the IPN, the moisture content and contact angle decreased compared to those of basic HEMA, but the tensile strength increased. The tensile strength of the second IPN was higher than that of the first IPN. In the case of $CaCl_2$, for the sample polymerized for 24 hours and the second IPN sample with 2% alginate, the contact angle decreased as the content of $CaCl_2$ increased. Conclusions: In this study, the tensile strength increased as the content of $CaCl_2$ increased, and the wettability increased as a result of IPN of alginate and $CaCl_2$. The hydrogel containing the alginate and $CaCl_2$ was confirmed possible utilization as contact lens material.
To study the optimal synthesis conditions of aqueous acrylic adhesive using emulsion polymerization, the effects of monomer, surfactant and initiator on the adhesive properties, such as conversion rate, particle size, peel strength, and glass transition temperature, were investigated. 2-EHA, n-BA and MMA were used as main monomers, 2-HEMA and AAc as functional monomers, SLS as surfactant and APS as initiator, respectively. The conversion rate was over 95% at 3.75% surfactant(SLS/monomer), 0.612% initiator(APS/monomer) and $82^{\circ}C$ reaction temperature. When the excess amount of surfactant or initiator was used, the peel strength represented decreasing tendency. The maximum conversion rate and peel strength were obtained at 65% 2-EHA/monomer, 20% BA/monomer, and 10% MMA/monomer.
Poly (N,N-dimethylacrylamide) is very useful in various fields due to its remarkable properties, such as water solubility and biocompatibility. This study used N,N-dimethylacrylamide with the cross-linker EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate), HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), MMA (methyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone) and the initiator AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) for copolymerization. Measurement of the physical properties of the copolymerized polymer showed that the water content was 36 - 42%, refractive index was 1.433 - 1.426 and visible ray transmittance 90 - 91% while the oxygen permeability showed a distribution between 13.1 and $21.29{\times}10^{-11}(cm^2/sec)$ ($mlO_2/mL{\times}mmHg$). The measurement showed that the increased amount of oxygen permeability of the copolymer measured using the polarographic method range between 11.0% and 80.5%. Based on the results of this study, the produced copolymer is suitable for use as a material to high oxygen permeability hydrogel lenses.
To prepare acrylic type pressure-sensitive adhesive, quarter polymers were synthesized from butylacrylate (BA), 2-ethylhexylacrylate (2-EHA), methyl methacrylate (MMA), 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (2-HEMA). The quarter polymer was identified by FT-IR. Molecular weight was measured by Gel Pearmeation Chromatograhy. Also, viscosity, solid content and peel strength were investigated. The peel strength was $160g_f/25mm$ when the volume ratio of feed monomer to solvent was 1.3:1 and the ratio was relevant to commercial usage. The pot life of adhesive was 30 s at the 50 m/min of heat treatment rate, and it indicated that the minimum drying time was 30 s. Not only weathering resistance keep up peel strength $160{\sim}180g_f/25mm$ after 1000 h, but also no residual remains.
Platinum nanoparticles were added to a mixture of HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), NVP (N-vinyl pyrrolidone) and MMA (methyl methacrylate) in a mould at various concentrations. The resulting mixture was copolymerized by heating at $70^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, $80^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, and $100^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, respectively. The physical properties of contact lens were then measured. The oxygen transmissibility of $9{\sim}15{\times}10^{-9}$ cm/s mL $O_2$/mL ${\times}$ mmHg, water content of 34.22~35.52%, refractive index of 1.432~1.435, visible transmittance of 88.3~91.2% and tensile strength of 0.141~0.152 kgf were obtained. The addition of platinum nanoparticles to the polymer allowed the contact lens to have various colors without artificial coloring agents. The polymer materials satisfied the physical properties required to produce contact lenses, making the material suitable to be applied as a functional material for ophthalmological purposes.

NCO terminated polyurethane prepolymers were synthesized from isophorone diisocyanate(IPDI), polycarbonate diol(PCD) and dimethylol propionic acid(DMPA). Subsequently, acrylic terminated polyurethanes were prepared by capping the NCO groups of polyurethane prepolymers with different types of acrylate monomers, such as 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate(HEMA), 2-hydroxyethyl acrylate(HEA) and pentaerythritol triacrylate(PETA). The average particle sizes of the acrylic terminated polyurethane solutions were increased by capping acrylate monomers. Also, the prepared coating films showed better abrasion resistance and pencil hardness than those of pure waterborne polyurethanes. The coating film with PETA exhibited the best abrasion resistance and pencil hardness of coating films prepared with three acrylate monomers.
