A 2D-LDV system was employed to investigate the flow field characteristics in fully developed drag reducing turbulent channel flows. The additive used in this study was Habon-G which showed splendid drag reduction effect and minimum mechanical degradation trend in the closed flow circulation loop. In order to have better understanding of the drag reduction mechanism, the instantaneous velocities were carefully measured under various experimental conditions and the flow characteristics including time-averaged velocity, turbulent intensity and Reynolds shear stresses were carefully assessed. The time-averaged velocity profiles of surfactant flows showed more parabolic shape(typically shown in a laminar flow) together with significant suppression of turbulent production, yielding the shear induced micelle structure orienting in the flow direction due to its isotropic characteristics. Especially it was observed that the maximum intensity for drag reducing flows was shifted away from the wall and that the streamwise and normal turbulent intensities were strongly altered. This phenomenon strongly suggests that the viscous sublayer becomes thicker with addition of surfactant. Turbulent momentum transport was drastically suppressed across the whole drag reducing channel flow.
A large eddy simulation (LES) has been conducted for the flow and heat transfer in a dimpled channel. Two dimple depths of 0.2 and 0.3 times of the dimple print diameter (= D) have been compared at the bulk Reynolds number of 20,000. Three Reynolds numbers of 5,000, 10,000 and 20,000 have been studied, while the dimple depth is kept as 0.2 D. With the deeper dimple, the flow reattachment occurs father downstream inside the dimple, so that the heat transfer is not as effectively enhanced as the case with shallow ones. At the low Reynolds number of 5,000, the Nusselt number ratio is as high as those for the higher Reynolds number, although the value of heat transfer coefficient decreases because of the weak shear layer vortices.

In this paper, the fluid flow behavior past a pair of rectangular cylinders placed in a two dimensional horizontal channel has been investigated using Lattice-Boltzmann Method(LBM). The LBM has built up on the D2Q9 model and the single relaxation time method called the Lattice-BGK(Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook)model. Streamlines, velocity, vorticity and pressure contours are provided to analyze the important characteristics of the flow field for a wide range of non dimensional parameters that present in our simulation. Special attention is paid to the effect of spacing(d) between two cylinders and the blockage ratio A(=h/H), where H is the channel height and h is the rectangular cylinder height. for different Reynolds numbers. The first cylinder is called upstream cylinder and the second one as downstream cylinder. The downstream fluid flow fields have been more influenced by its blockage ratios(A) and Reynolds numbers(Re) whereas the upstream flow patterns(in front of downstream cylinder) by the gap length(d) between two cylinders. Moreover, it is observed that after a certain gap, both upstream and downstream flow patterns are almost similar size and shape. The simulation result has been compared with analytical solution and it is found to be in excellent agreement.

A CFD analysis was performed to examine the inner channel blockage of dual-cooled fuel which has being developed for the power uprate of a pressurized water reactor (PWR). The dual-cooled fuel consists of an annular fuel pellet($UO_2$) and dual claddings as well as internal and external cooling channels. The dual-cooled annular fuel is different from a conventional solid 려el by employing an internal cooling channel for each fuel pellet as well as an external cooling channel. One of the key issues is the hypothetical event of inner channel blockage because the inner channel is an isolated flow channel without the coolant mixing between the neighboring flow channels. The inner channel blockage could cause the Departure from Nucleate Boiling (DNB) in the inner channel that eventually causes a fuel failure. This paper presents the CFD simulation of the flow through the side holes of the bottom end plug for the complete entrance blockage of the inner channel. Since the amount of coolant supply to the inner channel depends on largely the pressure loss at the side hole, the pressure loss coefficient of the side hole was estimated by the CFD analysis. The CFD prediction of the loss coefficient showed a reasonable agreement with an experimental data for the complete blockage of both the inner channel entrance and the outer channel. The CFD predictions also showed the decrease of the loss coefficient as the outer channel blockage increases.

During the four river restoration project, several weirs were constructed in the four rivers to prevent drought and flood, to improve water quality, and to manage water resources. However, due to the weir construction, bed changes are produced in the upstream channel of installed weirs because the incoming flow velocity is reduced and sediment transport capacity is also lowered. Especially, since the Haman Weir is located in the lowest downstream section among newly installed weirs in Nakdong River, bed change and sedimentation problems are expected due to the mild slope and reduced velocity. Therefore, numerical simulation was performed to analyze flow and bed changes in the upstream channel of Haman Weir and to evaluate quantitatively sediment control methods for bed stabilization using CCHE2D model. As a result of flow and bed change simulation after installation of Haman Weir, the flow velocity at the initial condition was faster than the final bed condition with the specific simulation time and it was represented that the locations where bed changes were great were identical for all modeling conditions of flow discharge. In case of 4.5 m of water level lowered from 5.0 m of the management water level at Haman Weir for bed stabilization, the flow velocity was generally faster than the case of the management water level and the continuous erosion was developed at the most narrow channel section as the applied discharge and simulation period were increased. The channel width extension at the most narrow channel section was proposed in this study to prevent and stabilize continuos bed erosion. As a result of numerical analysis, there was no bed erosion after channel width extension and it was presented that the channel geometry extension was effective for bed stabilization at Haman Weir.

Present study examines detonation wave propagation characteristics in annular channel. A normalized value of channel width to the annular radius was considered as a geometric parameter. A parametric study was carried out for a various regimes of detonation waves from weakly unstable to highly unstable detonation waves. Numerical approaches that used in the previous study of numerical requirements of the simulation of detonation wave propagations in 2D and 3D channel were used also for the present study with OpenMP parallization for multi-core SMP machines. The major effect of the curved geometry on the detonation wave propagation seems to be a flow compression effect, regardless of the detonation regimes. The flow compression behind the detonation wave by the curved geometry of the circular channel pushes the detonation wave front and results in the overdriven detonation waves with increased detonation speed beyond the Chapmann-Jouguet speed. This effect gets stronger as the normalized radius smaller, as expected. The effect seems to be negligible beyond the normalized radius of 10.
Flow through compliant tubes with linear taper in wall thickness is numerically simulated by finite element analysis. Two models are examined: a planar two-dimensional channel, and an axisymmetric tube. For verification of the numerical method, flow through a compliant stenotic vessel is simulated and compared to existing experimental data. Computational results for an axisymmetric tube show that as cross-sectional area falls with a reduction in downstream pressure, flow rate increases and reaches a maximum when the speed index (mean velocity divided by wave speed) is near unity at the point of minimum cross-section area, indicative of wave speed flow limitation or "choking" (flow speed equals wave speed) in previous one-dimensional studies. For further reductions in downstream pressure, flow rate decreases. Cross-sectional narrowing is significant but localized. When the ratio of downstream-to-upstream wall thickness is ${\le}$ 2 the area throat is located near the downstream end; as wall taper is increased to ${\ge}$ 3 the constriction moves to the upstream end of the tube. In the planar two-dimensional channel, area reduction and flow limitation are also observed when outlet pressure is decreased. In contrast to the axisymmetric case, however, the elastic wall in the two-dimensional channel forms a smooth concave surface with the area throat located near the mid-point of the elastic wall. Though flow rate reaches a maximum and then falls, the flow does not appear to be choked.

By using unique experimental techniques and careful construction of the experimental apparatus, the characteristics of the local heat transfer were investigated using the condensing R134a two-phase flow, in horizontal single mini-channels. The circular channels (D$_{h}$=0.493, 0.691, and 1.067 mm) and rectangular channels (Aspect Ratio=1.0, D$_{h}$=0.494, 0.658, and 0.972 mm) were tested and compared. Tests were performed for a mass flux of 100, 200, 400, and 600 kg/$m^2$s, a heat flux of 5 to 20 ㎾/$m^2$, and a saturation temperature of 4$0^{\circ}C$. In this study, effect of heat flux, mass flux, vapor qualities, hydraulic diameter, and channel geometry on flow condensation are investigated and the experimental local condensation heat transfer coefficients are shown. The experimental data of condensation Nusselt number are compared with existing correlations.ons.

Two redox processes of methyl viologen (+2/+, +/0) in acetonitrile were investigated by using channel electrode voltammetric and in situ electrochemical ESR methods. Two separated unequal plateau currents of the first (+2/+) and second (+/0) redox processes of the viologen were observed in the channel electrode voltammograms and showed a cube-root depedndence on the electrolyte flow rate, respectively. The simple Levich analysis resulted in two different diffusion coefficients of $D_{+2}=2.2{\times}10^{-5}\;cm^2/s$ and $D_+=3.0{\times}10^{-5}cm^2/s$ from the limiting currents. In situ electrochemical ESR studies were performed for the monocation radicals generated at the potentials of the two plateau currents in the electrolyte flow range $1.3{\times}10^{-1}{\geq}v_f{\geq}2.7{\times}10^{-3}\;cm^3/s$. Backward implicitfinite difference method was employed to simulate the electrochemical kinetic problem of two sequential electron transfers ($MV^{+2}+e{\leftrightarrows}MV^+,\;MV^{+}+e{\leftrightarrows}MV^0$) coupled with reversible comproportionation ($MV^{2+}+MV^0{{\leftrightarrows}^{k_f}_{k_b}}2MV^+$). $k_f$ was found to be greater than ($10^6M^{-1}s^{-1}.

The performance of the crossover system of a centrifugal compressor stage consisting of static components of $180^{\circ}$ U-bend, return channel vanes and exit ducting with a $90^{\circ}$ bend is investigated. This study is confined to the assessment of performance of the crossover system by varying the shape of the return channel vanes. For this purpose two different types of Return Channel Vanes (RCV1 and RCV2) were experimentally investigated. The performance of the crossover system is discussed in terms of total pressure loss coefficient, static pressure recovery coefficient and vane surface pressure distribution. The experimentation was carried out on a test setup in which static swirl vanes were used to simulate the flow at the exit of an actual centrifugal compressor impeller with a design flow coefficient of 0.053. The swirl vanes are connected to a mechanism with which the flow angle at the inlet of U-bend could be altered. The measurements were taken at five different operating conditions varying from 70% to 120% of design flow rate. On an overall assessment RCV1 is found to give better performance in comparison to RCV2 for different U-bend inlet flow angles. The performance of RCV2 was verified using numerical studies with the help of a CFD Code. Three dimensional sector models were used for simulating the flow through the crossover system. The turbulence was predicted with standard k-$\varepsilon$, 2-equation model. The iso-Mach contour plots on different planes and development of secondary flows were visualized through this study.
