  • In this paper, new hybrid-pattern recognition system is proposed using Radon transform. Transforming the 2-D image into the 1-D projection data, Fourier spectrum at each projection angle is obtained by the Fourier transforming the projection data using the A/0. After extracting the suitable features from the Fourier spectrum and projection data, the input pattern is recognized using the wquared Mahalanobis distance. The results of this system showed the 100% recognition rate for the 10 input patterns.

  • Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) is a major signal processing block being widely used. For long-point FFT processing, usually more than 1024 points, its low-complexity implementation becomes very important while retaining high SQNR (Signal-to-Quantization Noise Ratio). In this paper, we present a low-complexity FFT algorithm with a simple dynamic scaling scheme. For the 2048-point pipelined FFT processing, we can reduce the number of general multipliers by half compared to the well-known radix-2 algorithm. Also, the table size for twiddle factors is reduced to 35% and 53% compared to the radix-2 and radix-22 algorithms respectively, while achieving SQNR of more than 55dB without increasing the internal wordlength progressively.

  • We have implemented a planar integrated optics for the fractional Fourier transform (FRT) which has recently been developed as a generalized form of the conventional Fourier transform. FRT optical systems provide versatile tools for analyzing signals and designing hardwares, but require high accuracy and stability in the arrangement of optical components because of their shift-variant characteristic. The planar optical FRT setup composed of free-space optical components integrated on a single glass block makes the FRT of 2-dimensional(2-D) input patterns through the 3-D glass-space. Therefore, taking advantage of the compactness, easy alignment and thermal/mechanical stability, the planar optics can provide a useful approach to realizing an optical fractional correlation system in a practical way. In the experiment, we have obtained accurate FRT results by using the planar integrated optics with 4 different fractional orders of 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0.

  • Seismic data is often contaminated with high-energy, spatially aliased noise, which has proven impractical to attenuate using Fourier techniques. Wavelet filtering, however, has proven capable of attacking several types of localized noise simultaneously regardless of their frequencies. In this study a 2-D stationary wavelet transform is used to decompose seismic data into its wavelet components. A threshold is applied to these coefficients to attenuate high amplitude noise, followed by an inverse transform to reconstruct the seismic trace. The stationary wavelet transform minimizes the phase-shift errors induced by thresholding that occur when the conventional discrete wavelet transform is used.

  • ISAR(Inverse Synthetic Aperture Radar) images represent the 2-D(two-dimensional) spatial distribution of RCS (Radar Cross Section) of an object, and they can be applied to the problem of target identification. A traditional approach to ISAR imaging is to use a 2-D IFFT(Inverse Fast Fourier Transform). However, the 2-D IFFT results in low resolution ISAR images especially when the measured frequency bandwidth and angular region are limited. In order to improve the resolution capability of the Fourier transform, various high-resolution spectral estimation approaches have been applied to obtain ISAR images, such as AR(Auto Regressive), MUSIC(Multiple Signal Classification) or Modified MUSIC algorithms. In this study, these high-resolution spectral estimators as well as 2-D IFFT approach are combined with a recently developed ISAR image classification algorithm, and their performances are carefully analyzed and compared in the framework of radar target recognition.

  • A method is described for measuring clinically relevant levels of glucose in a pH 7.4 phosphate buffer by nearinfrared (NIR) absorption spectroscopy. Three types of NIR spectrometer, dispersive type, photo-diode array (PDA) type, and fourier transform (FT) type spectrometer were used and the performance was compared. Spectra were collected with a cuvette cell or quartz liquid fiber of 1 mm or 2 mm optical pathlength as transmittance method. Glucose absorption band appeared at second overtone, first overtone, and combination region for all systems. By use of the multivariate technigue of partial least squares (PLS) regression, glucose concentrations can be determined with a 16, 44, and 9.1 mg/d l standard error of prediction for dispersive type, photo-diode array type, and fourier transform type system, respectively. Sensitivity of spectrometer was evaluated by absorbance for the difference of 10 mg/d l glucose. Three absorption bands, second overtone, first overtone, and combination region were suited to three types systems, dispersive type, photo-diode array type, and fourier transform type systems, respectively. This investigation showed that three types NIR spectrometer were proper method for identification and quantitative analysis of glucose and possible for noninvasive blood glucose monitoring.

  • Frequency domain analysis is a fundamental procedure for understanding the characteristics of visual data. Several studies have been conducted with 2D videos, but analysis of stereoscopic 3D videos is rarely carried out. In this paper, we derive the Fourier transform of a simplified 3D video signal and analyze how a 3D video is influenced by disparity and motion in terms of temporal aliasing. It is already known that object motion affects temporal frequency characteristics of a time-varying image sequence. In our analysis, we show that a 3D video is influenced not only by motion but also by disparity. Based on this conclusion, we present a temporal anti-aliasing filter for a 3D video. Since the human process of depth perception mainly determines the quality of a reproduced 3D image, 2D image processing techniques are not directly applicable to 3D images. The analysis presented in this paper will be useful for reducing undesirable visual artifacts in 3D video as well as for assisting the development of relevant technologies.

  • This paper discusses a new unsupervised XML document clustering technique based on the function transform and FFT(Fast Fourier Transform). An XML document is transformed into a discrete function based on the hierarchical nesting structure of the elements. The discrete function is, then, transformed into vectors using FFT. The vectors of two documents are compared using a weighted Euclidean distance metric. If the comparison is lower than the pre specified threshold, the two documents are considered similar in the structure and are grouped into the same cluster. XML clustering can be useful for the storage and searching of XML documents. The experiments were conducted with 800 synthetic documents and also with 520 real documents. The experiments showed that the function transform and FFT are effective for the incremental and unsupervised clustering of XML documents similar in structure.

  • This paper proposes a double frequency method using FTP(Fourier Transform Profilometry) in fringe projection techniques for 3D measurement systems. In fringe projection techniques, fringe pattern images are projected and captured, and then object is measured by analysing phase. PMP(Phase Measuring Profilometry) for analysing phase provides high-resolution and is robust to object's reflection and background intensities. However, the measurement range is narrow due to 2π ambiguity. In order to overcome this problem, a double frequency method is often used. This method can widen the range of measurement while maintaining the high-resolution, but the measurement time is taken about twice due to grab 2 times number of images. The proposed double frequency method using FTP requires an additional image for resolving 2π ambiguity. The proposed method effectively reduces the measurement time while maintaining the same accuracy.

  • The scattered radiation always occurs when X-ray strikes the object. To absorb the scattered X-rays, the antiscatter grids are used, however these grids images are superimposed in the projection radiography images. When those images are displayed on the monitor, moir$\acute{e}$ patterns are overlapped over the images and disturb the anatomical informations. Most of the researches performed to date removed the grid noises by calculating or observing those frequencies in one dimensional frequency domain, two dimensional wavelet transform or Fourier transform. Those methods filtered not only the grid noises but also diagnostic informations. In this paper, we proposed the combined wavelet packet-Fourier method to remove the grid artifact in CR images. For the phantom image, the proposed method achieved from 5.2 to 7.4 dB better than others in SNR and for CR images by rejecting the grid noise bands effectively while leaving the remaining bands unchanged, the loss of images could get minimal results.
