  • In this paper, the vibration characteristics of a 2-phase Hybrid type Linear Stepping Motor(HLSM) are analyzed using the ACSL. A magnetic equivalent circuit is based on the structure of the HLSM, and then the electric equivalent circuit of the HLSM is derived by solving equations for the magnetic equivalent circuit. A normal force is calculated using FEM(Flux2D). And the vibration characteristics of the HLSM are simulated by the ACSL with the voltage equations, the thrust equation, the normal force equation and the kinetic equation.

  • This paper deals with numerical analysis on a high-$T_c$ superconducting (HTS) electrodynamic suspension (EDS) simulator according to the variation of the ground conductor conditions. Because the levitation force of EDS system is formed by the magnetic reaction between moving magnets and fixed ground conductors, the distribution of the magnetic flux on a ground conductor plays an important role in the determining of the levitation force level. The possible way to analyze HTS EDS system was implemented with 3D finite element method (FEM) tool. A plate type ground conductor generated stronger levitation force than ring type ground conductor. Although the outer diameter of Ring3 (335 mm) was larger than that of Ring2 (235 mm), the levitation force by Ring2 was stronger than that by Ring3. Considering the results of this paper, it is recommended that the magnetic flux distribution according to the levitation height and magnet current should be taken into account in the design of the ground conductors.

Associated-Genes and Virulence Factors of Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Nasal Cavity of Neonates (신생아 비강에서 분리된 황색포도구균의 병원성 인자와 관련 유전자)

  • Purpose : Nosocomial infection with Staphylococcus aureus, especially methicillin resistant S. aureus, has become a serious concern in the neonatal intensive care unit. The aim of this study is to investigate the virulence factors, and the relationship between the antibiotic resistance and the associated genes of Staphylococcus aureus isolated from nasal cavity of neonates. Methods : Fifty one isolates of S. aureus were obtained from nasal swab taken in 28 neonates in the NICU and nursery of Pusan National University Hospital between February and May, 2001. They were tested in regard to antibiotic susceptibility, coagulase test and typing, plasmid DNA profile, as well as reactivity to enterotoxin A-E(sea, seb, sec, sed, see) genes and toxic shock syndrome toxin-1(tst) gene by polymerase chain reaction(PCR). Associated genes such as mecA, mecR1, mecI, and femA were also determined by PCR. The origin of MRSA strains was assessed using DNA fingerprinting by arbitrarily-primed polymerase chain reaction(AP-PCR). Results : Twenty three(45.1%) and six(11.8%) isolates were resistant to oxacillin and vancomycin respectively. Multidrug resistance to three or more of the antibiotics tested was observed in 51.0% of the isolates. Forty two isolates were coagulase positive and twenty two isolates had mecA gene. Sixteen isolates had both mecA and femA genes and had type I-III plasmids. 64.7% of isolates carried sec gene, and 80.4% carried tst gene. DNA fingerprinting by AP-PCR for 12 MRSA strains showed 10 distinct patterns, suggesting different origins. Conclusion : We confirmed that the prevalence of nasal carriage of S. aureus and the incidence of antimicrobial-resistant S. aureus, especially vancomycin resistance, is very high in neonates who were admitted in NICU and nursery. It is possible that these pathogens are responsible for serious nosocomial infections in neonates. The need for improved surveillance and continuous control of pathogens is emphasized.

Accuracy Examination in the RCS Computation of a Leaf Using the Resistive Sheet Technique with Various Thicknesses and Moisture Contents (잎 두께와 수분함유량에 따른 손실판 방식 RCS 계산의 정확성 검증)

  • The accuracy of the resistive-sheet technique in calculating the RCS(Radar Cross Section) of a deciduous leaf is examined in this paper for various thicknesses and dielectric constants, and a range of thicknesses for the resistive sheet technique is proposed. At first, a leaf was assumed to be a lossy dielectric disk, and the dielectric disk was again assumed to be a resistive sheet with an appropriate resistivity for a given thickness, a dielectric constant, and a frequency. Then, the RCS of the leaf was computed using the physical optics(PO) method, and was compared with the calculation results of a numerical analysis: i.e., a commercial tool based on the FEM (Finite Element Method) technique. It was shown that the error increases as the thickness increases. The error was 0.1 dB, for example, when the thickness is 1.2 mm and 3.7 dB when the thickness is 3 mm with a dielectric constant of(21.4, 9.7) at 9.6 GHz. It was also found that the error decreases as the dielectric constant increases. This study will be very useful for calculating the scattering characteristics of numerous leaves in a vegetation canopy for estimating its radar backscatter using scattering model.

Experimental and numerical investigation on flexural response of reinforced rubberized concrete beams using waste tire rubber

  • The impacts of waste tire rubber (WTR) on the bending conduct of reinforced concrete beams (RCBs) are investigated in visualization of experimental tests and 3D finite element model (FEM) using both ANSYS and SAP2000. Several WTR rates are used in total 4 various full scale RCBs to observe the impact of WTR rate on the rupture and bending conduct of RCBs. For this purpose, the volumetric ratios (Vf) of WTR were chosen to change to 0%, 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% in the whole concrete. In relation to experimental test consequences, bending and rupture behaviors of the RCBs are observed. The best performance among the beams was observed in the beams with 2.5% WTR. Furthermore, as stated by test consequences, it is noticed that while WTR rate in the RCBs is improved, max. bending in the RCBs rises. For test consequences, it is clearly recognized as WTR rate in the RCB mixture is improved from 0% to 2.5%, deformation value in the RCB remarkably rises from 3.89 cm to 7.69 cm. This consequence is markedly recognized that WTR rates have a favorable result on deformation values in the RCBs. Furthermore, experimental tests are compared to 3D FEM consequences via using ANSYS software. In the ANSYS, special element types are formed and nonlinear multilinear misses plasticity material model and bilinear misses plasticity material model are chosen for concrete and compression and tension elements. As a consequence, it is noticed that each WTR rates in the RCBs mixture have dissimilar bending and rupture impacts on the RCBs. Then, to observe the impacts of WTR rate on the constructions under near-fault ground motions, a reinforced-concrete building was modelled via using SAP2000 software using 3-D model of the construction to complete nonlinear static analysis. Beam, column, steel haunch elements are modeled as nonlinear frame elements. Consequently, the seismic impacts of WTR rate on the lateral motions of each floor are obviously investigated particularly. Considering reduction in weight of structure and capacity of the members with using waste tire rubber, 2.5% of WTR resulted in the best performance while the construction is subjected to near fault earthquakes. Moreover, it is noticeably recognized that WTR rate has opposing influences on the seismic displacement behavior of the RC constructions.

2D Finite Element Modeling of Bed Elevation Change in a Curved Channel (유한요소법을 이용한 만곡수로에서의 2차원 하상변동 수치모형)

  • A finite element model is developed for the numerical simulation of bed elevation change in a curved channel. The SU/PG (Streamline-Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin) method is used to solve 2D shallow water equations and the BG (Bubnov-Galerkin) method is used for the Exner equation. For the time derivative terms, the Crank-Nicolson scheme is used. The developed model is a decoupled model in a sense that the bed elevation does not change simultaneously with the flow during the computational time step. The total load formula with is used for the sediment transport model. The slip conditions are described along the lateral boundaries. The effects of gravity force due to geometry change and the secondary flows in a curved channel are considered in the model. For the verification, the model is applied to two laboratory experiments. The first is $140^{\circ}$ bended channel data at Delft Hydraulics Laboratory and the second is $140^{\circ}$ bended channel data at Laboratory of Fluid Mechanics of the Delft University of Technology. The finite element grid is constructed with linear quadrilateral elements. It is found that the computed results are in good agreement with measured data, showing a point bar at the inner bank and a pool at the outer bank.

  • The stationary discontinuous armatures that are used in permanent magnet linear synchronous motors (PM-LSMs) have been proposed as a driving source for transportation systems. However, the stationary discontinuous armature PM-LSM contains the outlet edges which always exist as a result of the discontinuous arrangement of the armature. For this reason, the outlet edge cogging force generated between the armature's core and the mover's permanent magnet. This paper contemplated the outlet cogging for ceaccording to 2-D numerical analysis by FEM. We installed the auxiliary pole for in order to minimize the outlet cogging force.

  • This paper presents an improved initial force method for determining the initial shape of suspension bridges. After determining the initial shape factors through the force equilibrium conditions of each hanging point, the initial force method was applied with the computed values, each node's coordinates, and unstrained lengths of the cable element as inputs. The unstrained length of each cable element was regarded as a fixed value in each iteration step, unlike in the typical initial force method. This method can be applied to 2D and 3D suspension bridge models. The validity of the present method was demonstrated by comparing the results of the numerical examples.

  • The corner protection which is consist of insulation and $9\%$ nickel liner is designed to mitigate the high hoop tension at the corner of LNG storage tank by LNG leakage. So the design loads depend on thermal and liquid pressure from leaked LNG In this paper design conditions are suggested as operating, major and minor leak conditions. And in order to check integrity of comer protection for the design conditions by appendix 4 in ASME section VIII div.2, acceptability checking process that have stress categorization and finite element analysis is explained.

  • In this present work, spline FEA for the trimmed NURBS surface of the 2D linear elasticity problem is presented. The main benefit of the proposed method is that no additional efforts for modeling of trimmed NURBS surfaces are needed and the information of the trimming curves and trimmed surfaces exported from the CAD system can be directly used for analysis. For this, trimmed elements are searched by using NURBS projection scheme. The integration of the trimmed elements is performed by using the NURBS-enhanced integration scheme. The formulation of constructing stiffness matrix of trimmed elements is presented. In this formulation, the information of the trimming curve is used for calculating the Jacobian as well as for obtaining integration points. The robustness and effectiveness of the proposed method are investigated through various numerical examples.
