  • A general program of three dimensional profile design of impellers for centrifugal/fixed-flow compressors is successfully commercialized using Bezier curves and quasi-3D flow analysis methods. Control points for meridional hub and shroud contours and blade camberline angles are arbitrarily changed to give smooth Bezier curves. With specified blade normal thicknesses, contructed geometry is instantly analyzed using flow analysis methods to be checked.

  • 2-dimensional impeller's distinctive feature is expected to have an influence on performance and flow characteristics of centrifugal compressor. And new design method is required for 2-dimensional impeller, because the unique geometry cannot be designed using conventional theories. The objective of this study is to advance new design technology for 2-dimensional impeller and to investigate the performance characteristics of designed 2-dimensional centrifugal compressor. The performance test for 2-dimensional impeller is conducted at 35000, 40000 and 45000rpm. Also numerical calculation is applied by using commercial CFD code, FLUENT, and the results are compared with experimental results.

  • This study investigated on details of flow characteristics in a vaneless diffuser of a compressor with 2-dimensional impeller at various flow rates. Experiment for a low speed compressor model in a water reservoir was performed to analyze the flow field in the vaneless diffuser and volute casing, which was done by PIV measurement. It was also focused on the periodic flow patterns occurring at low flow rate near unstable operating region of the compressor. At low flow rate condition, the flow visualization clearly shows that the flow energy from impeller is highly accumulated at the compressor exit by the blockage effect of a flow damper and consequently the reverse flow occurs in the diffuser.

  • 선박용 디젤엔진에 정착되어 사용되는 기존의 터보차져 성능을 개량하기 위하여 압축기만의 수정개발을 수행한 결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. (1) 터빈과의 싸이클 matching 작업을 통하여 기존의 압축기 성능에 비하여 $7\%$ 증가된 회전수와 $8\%$ 증가된 입구 공기유량으로 상향 조정되면서 효율의 큰 저하 없이 전압력비도 3.5 수준으로 증가되도록 설계점이 성공적으로 확정되었다. (2) 기존의 압축기 케이싱과 스크롤을 대부분 그대로 사용한다는 기하학적 제한조건하에서 3차원 공력 설계가 성공적으로 수행되었고, 설계된 임펠러는 3차원 압축성 난류 수치유동해석 과정을 통해 구체적인 내부 유동과 임펠러의 overall 성능을 확인하였다. (3) 터보차져 전용 시험리그에서 시제품을 성능시험한 결과, 전반적인 압축기의 성능곡선을 성공적으로 도출하였다. 대체적으로 전체 회전수별로 실험결과로 얻은 전압력비는 설계 예측치와 매우 잘 일치하는 모습을 볼 수 있었고, 단열효율의 경우, 실험치와 예측치가 서로 잘 일치하고 있었다. 설계의도대로 설계점에서의 압력비 상승과 유량의 증가 등은 만족스럽게 달성된 것으로 판단된다. (4) 베인디퓨져의 제작문제로 인하여 설계회전수에서의 surge와 choke margin이 설계의도와는 달리 좋지 않은 상태이다. 이는 본래 설계대로 베인디퓨져를 재제작하고 설치각의 크기를 조절함으로써 앞으로 진행될 추가시험에서 보완할 예정이다.

  • An aerodynamic design for centrifugal compressor which was applied to medium speed diesel engine has done. First of all, exact compressor specifications must be defined by accurate engine system matching. This matching program has been developed. Using the mean1ine prediction method, geometric design and performance curve for compressor was done and verified by comparing three dimensional viscous CFD results. The deviation at the design point was about 2.3%. Combustor has been designed and manufactured for the performance test of medium speed diesel engine turbocharger. Fuel nozzle of combustor was designed and performed by PIV and PDPA test equipment. Through these results, spray characteristics were studied and flow coefficient equation was deduced.

3차원 천음속 원심압축기 디퓨저 성능연구 (Performance Analysis of Three-Dimensional Transonic Centrifugal Compressor Diffuser)

  • CSCM upwind flux difference splitting compressible Navier-Stokes method has been used to predict the transonic flows in a centrifugal compressor diffuser. The modified cyclic. TDMA and the mass flux boundary conditions were used as boundary conditions of the diffuser analysis. Broad flow separation on the suction surface near the hub and shroud was observed from the results of the mass flow rates 5.8, 6.0 and 6.2kg/s at 27000 rpm. The three-dimensional flow analysis predicted successfully that the static pressure increased and the total pressure decreased through the flow passage of the channel diffuser when compared to two-dimensional analysis due to the strong effect of the three-dimensional flow. The mass averaged loss coefficients and pressure coefficients were also studied.

  • This study is performed to understand the effect of the variation in the passage area of a two-dimensional impeller on its performance characteristics. We observe the results with changing the area ratio of inlet to outlet about $1{\sim}2.8$. A comparison between the experimental and numerical results was performed for the same configuration in order to verify the reliability of the CFD code. Overall characteristics in the passages of impeller were analyzed in detail including streamline, Mach number, pressure and polytropic efficiency distribution. When the passage area ratio exceeds 2, the pressure ratio is high. An area ratio of 2.3 showed the highest efficiency. The results will be used as useful reference data to establish the design concept of two-dimensional impeller and to improve its performance.

The modified cyclic TDMA and the mass flux boundary conditions were used as boundary conditions of the diffuser analysis. With the mass flux boundary condition and the $130{\times}80{\times}40$ grid, the compressible upwind Navier-Stokes method predicted the transonic diffuser flowfield successfully. Plow changes in the impeller exit region due to the strong interaction between impeller exit and vaned diffuser, broad flow separation on the suction surface near hub and shroud was observed from the results of the mass flow rates 6.0 and 6.2kg/s at 27000 rpm. The static pressure increased and the total pressure decreased through the flow passage of the channel diffuser, which were predicted better from the three-dimensional analysis than from the two-dimensional analysis due to the strong effect of the three-dimensional flow. The mass averaged loss coefficients and pressure coefficients were also studied.
