The cetyltrimethyl ammonium bromide (CTAB)-modified montmorillonite (MMT) was synthesized via a novel "dissolution and reassembly" method. To determine the optimal formula, the adsorption of C.I. Reactive Red 2 (X3B) with CTAB/MMT was investigated. The optimal CTAB/MMT nanocomposite was used to remove 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol from aqueous solutions. The adsorption results can be described by Langmuir isotherm, and the adsorption capacities were 200 mg/g and 125 mg/g for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol, respectively. To realize the quick separation and recycle, the magnetic CTAB/MMT was further strategized and synthesized. The adsorption equilibrium time was 15 min for both contaminants; the ions' strength showed a little bit of influence on the adsorption performance. In addition, compared with acidic condition, neutral condition was more beneficial to the adsorption reaction. Due to the addition of $Fe_3O_4$, the adsorption capacities of this magnetic nanocomposite for 2,6-dichlorophenol and p-nitrophenol were a little bit decreased, which were 170 mg/g and 91 mg/g, respectively. However, the magnetic nanocomposite can be separated within 30 s under an external magnetic field, which would be useful in the practical application.
This study was performed to estimate the possibility of use of plant materials as catalytic agents fur the decontamination of waste waters contaminated with organic pollutants by using 2,4-dichlorophenol(2,4-DCP) as a model pollutant. Plant materials containing high peroxidase activity were selected as catalysts for the removal of 2,4-DCP. Peroxidase activity, which plant materials were containing, was measured, and the greatest peroxidase activity was observed in shepherd's purse, followed by turnip, sweet potato, Chinese cabbage and white radish. The peroxidase activity in shepherd's purse was four times higher than that of horseradish purchased in U.S.A. Using shepherd' s purse and turnip, it was investigated the effect of various factors on the decontamination of 2,4-DCP through oxidative coupling. The removal of 2,4-DCP was extremely fast, and a maximal removal could be achieved within 3 min for shepherd' s purse and 15min for turnip. The pH range was from 3.0 to 8.0 and the amount of $H_2O_2$ added was 9mM when maximal removal was achieved(over 90%). No increasing removal of 2,4-DCP was observed due to increasing the amount of $H_2O_2$ added (over 9mM). The initial concentration affected the transformation of 2,4-DCP incubated with plant materials. When turnip was used as catalytic agent, it was observed decreasing transformation of 2,4-DCP due to increasing initial concentration.
This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of aeration on removal of phenolic compounds in soils. Phenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and pentachlorophenol as phenolic compounds were chosen in this study. Texture of soil used was sandy loam. Temperature and moisture content of the soils in lab-scale reactors were maintained at $25^{\circ}C$ and at 15%, respectively. Phenolic compounds vaporized from reactors were trapped by methylene chloride solution. Phenolic compounds were applied to the soils as individual compound Aeration improved the phenol degradation rate in soil, while it did not in case of 2,4-dichlorophenol and pentachlorophenol. The amount of phenol vaporized by aeration was only 0.3of of that of initial phenol compound added to the soil. First order kinetics described the degradation rates of phenolic compounds better than zero order kinetics.
Physiological gradient of IAA-oxidizing enzyme activities was investigated in order to elucidate the mechanism of shoot differentiation in Cymbidium sp. (‘Jungfrau’) protocorms by using phenolic compounds (2, 4-dichlorophenol, catechol), auxin-inhibitors (PCIB, TIBA), and hormones (GA3, ABA, BA). The activity of IAA oxidase was decreased in protocorms treated with catechol decreased the catalytic activity of IAA oxidase or TIBA but this enzyme activity was increased after a temporary decrease at initial stages in the presence of 2, 4-dichlorophenol or PCIB. The activity of IAA oxidase in BA-treated protocorms (white and crown gall-like) was the highest of all. However, the catalytic activity of peroxidase increased after a temporary decrease at initial period. These results suggest that shoot differentiation and growth may be influenced by effective IAA levels in the protocorms causing IAA-oxidizing enzyme and phenolic compounds.
A new fiber optical sensor was developed for the determination of 2,4-dichlorophenol (DCP). The sensor was based on DCP oxidation by oxygen with the catalysis of iron(III) tetrasulfophthalocyanine (Fe(III)PcTs). The optical oxygen sensing film with $Ru(bpy)_3Cl_2$ as the fluorescence indicator was used to determine the consumption of oxygen in solution. A lock-in amplifier was used for detecting the lifetime of the oxygen sensing film by measuring the phase delay change of the sensor head. The different variables affecting the sensor performance were evaluated and optimized. Under the optimal conditions (i.e. pH 6.0, $25^{\circ}C$, Fe(III)PcTs concentration of 0.62 mg/mL), the linear detection range and response time of the sensor are $1.0{\times}10^{-6}-9.0{\times}10^{-6}$ mol/L and 250 s, respectively. The sensor displays high selectivity, good repeatability and stability, and can be used as an effective tool in analyzing DCP concentration in practical samples.
Design approach of upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket(UASB) process based on the biological kinetic parameters are known to be very difficult since the characteristics of the granular slut비e depends on the type of wastewater and size distribution of the granular sludge also depends on the upflow velocity in the UASB reactors. Furthermore, industrial wastewater containing toxic substances has been treated by UASB process without the clear knowledge of toxic effects on the granular slut형e. Hence, the present research was aimed on the intensive evaluation of biological kinetic parameters of the granular sludge in UASB reactor with and without toxic substance of 2, 4-dichlorophenol in order to present the basic design measures for UASB process design. The results could be summarized as follows. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) considerably varied with the granular size of the sludge. Generally, 연e k and ks values of the granular sludge increased with the particle size of the granule. The biological kinetic parameters(k and Ks) of the granular sludge obtained from batch test were not applicable to design purpose of UASB process due to substrate diffusional limitation into the granular sludge in the completely mixed UASB reactors. The toxic effects on k and Ks greatly varied with the granular sixte. And as the toxicant concentration increased, the k value decreased while the Ks value increased. Inhibition constant(hi) for k with the toxicant of 2, 4-dichlorophenol varied from 0.5 to 2.3 depending on the granular sizes while the inhibition constant(Ki) for Ks varied from 20.7 to 80.1, showing the mixed inhibition.
Octadecyl-modified graphene (graphene-C18) was fabricated and used as adsorbent in hollow fiber liquid phase microextraction (HF-LPME) for the first time. The extraction performance of graphene-C18 reinforced HF-LPME was evaluated using chlorophenols as model analytes. The factors affecting the extraction efficiency, such as extraction time, pH of the sample solution, agitation rate, the concentration of graphene-C18 and salt addition were optimized. After the graphene-C18 reinforced HF-LPME of the chlorophenols from honey sample, the analytes were separated and determined by high-performance liquid chromatography. The linearity was observed in the range of 5.0-200.0 ng $g^{-1}$ for 2-chlorophenol and 3-chlorophenol, and 2.0-200.0 ng $g^{-1}$ for 2,3-dichlorophenol and 3,4-dichlorophenol, respectively. The limits of detection (S/N = 3) of the method were lower than 1.5 ng $g^{-1}$. The recoveries of the method were between 88% and 108%. The method is simple, sensitive and has been resoundingly applied to analysis of chlorophenols in honey samples.

Twenty strains of pentachlorophnol (PCP) resistant bacteria were isolated from activated sludge of the sewage treatment plant of Jung Lang Chun, Seoul. The predominant strains were Bacillus spp. including B. sphaericus and E. schlegelii. The other strains were identified as Corynebacterium spp., Staphylococcus aureus, Arthrobacter spp. and Aeromonas spp. The resistant strains could be grouped into two categories; PCP-degrading and PCP-adsorbing/absorbing ones. PCP-degrading strains degraded $75{\sim}90%$ of PCP in the medium containing 100 ppm PCP during the first 24 hours of growth. At the initial period the PCP-adsorbing/absorbing strains removed PCP from the medium but started to release PCP after 24 or 72 hours of growth. PCP degradation products from the culture broth of PCP-degrading strains were identified by comparing their $R_f$ values with those of the reference compounds. 2-chlorophenol and 2.4-dichlorophenol were presumed to be the intermediate products of PCP degradation.
Over 50 morphologically distinctive soil Streptomyces were isolated from various Jocations in the Yongin area in Korea and visually screened for dye-decoloring activities on an agar plate. Two Streptomyces species (AD001 and ND002) showed strong dye-decoloring activities on the plate containing congo-red and new-fuchin dyes, respectively. Also, the liquid culture supernatants of these species showed 2,4-dicholophenol (DCP) oxidation activities only in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a characteristic of Actinomycetes lignin-peroxidase (ALiP)-P3 isoform found in dye-degrading S. viridosporus T7A and S. badius 252. Based on their dye-decoloring capabilities and the 2,4-DCP oxidation kinetic data, it is suggested that these Streptomyces secrete not-yet-characterized extracelluar enzyme(s), whose activities are very similar to the ALiP-P3 enzyme.

Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) hoses, polyethylene hose and silicone hose for tap water were tested with respect to migration of phenolic compounds to water. The highest concentrations (0.36~1.97 mg/L) of total phenolic compounds were observed in the test water from PVC hoses. Increasing residual Cl concentration from 0 to 0.5 mg/L or increasing water temperature from 4 to $25^{\circ}C$ increased 3~3.2 times and 100~104 times for migrated total phenolic compounds concentrations, in respectively. A major migrating phenolic compounds from PVC hoses were bisphenol-a (BPA) and it was observed that the concentration of migrating phenolic compounds in the order: DEHP > 2-chlorophenol > 2,4,6-trichlorophenol > 2,4-dichlorophenol from PVC hoses.
