One of the most interesting and promising steel groups considered for the rocket motor case, aircraft and aerospace component is the maraging(martensitic plus aging) nickel steel, developed by International Nickel Company in 1960. This material attains a very high strength with good fracture toughness by simple heat treatments which do not involve a quenching. Full strength can be obtained by "maraging" at 480.deg. for 3 hours for the 18% Ni maraging steel. The effect of heat treatments was considered on the residual stress field of 18% Ni maraging steel weldments. In experiments, various heat treatments such as stress relieve heat treatment, aging and solution heat treatment were carried out of the GTA weldments and the residual stresses were measured by using the hole drilling method. Whereas the conventional pattern of residual stress shows the stresses to be maximum along the weld centerline with tensile stress extending into the heat affected zone, the pattern in maraging steels shows the centerline stress to be compressive. After welding, a series of aging, solution heat treatment and solution heat treatment plus aging treatment were carried out and the residual stresses were measured to reveal that these heat treatments almost completely remove the welding residual stresses.
The influence of welding heat input variation(600-900J/cm) and heat-treatment condition after welding on tensile strength of butt welded joint in $175Kg/mm^2$ strength level Maraging steel(Co-free and Co-containing) sheets was investigated on the basis of hardness distribution, microstructure of weld metal and fracture surface. The obtained main results are as follows; 1. The strength of weldment (UTS, NTS), joint efficiency showed a little decreasing tendency with the increase in welding heat input, and the elongation showed a little increasing tendency with the increase in the width of weld metal. It was considered because of the plastic constraint of the high strength base metal. 2. The strength of weldment was better in the solution treatment and aging than the aging only after welding due to the disappearance of almost denverite in weld metal. 3. The hardness distribution in weldment after welding and heat-treatment was almost similar to both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel with change in welding heat input. 4. The fracture was occurred at weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a relatively shallow dimples in both Co containing and Co free Maraging steel.
The effect of applied stress, current density and heat-treatment after welding on the time to fracture, fracture behavior was investigated by the method of constant load tensile testing under catholic charging with hydrogen in E.B. welded 250,300 Grade 18% Ni Maraging steel sheet. The main results obtained are as follows: 1. All specimen showed the characteristic delayed failure and the time to fracture showed decreasing tendency with the increase in current density and applied stress. 2. Hydrogen embitterment susceptibility of notched specimen after solution-treatment and aging after welding was more increased than that of aged smooth specimen and as welded specimen. 3. Fracture surface showed a typical intergranular fracture on the border, a dimple pattern in the center of specimen and some quasi-cleavage fracture between the intergranular and the dimple.

The strength level of welded joint in room temperature and elevated temperature up to $600^{\circ}C$ was investigated in 250 and 300 grade 18% Ni maraging steel sheet welded with electron beam. The results obtained in this study are as follows; 1. Optimum welding heat input was 600J/cm in 1.0mm thickness and the room temperature tensile strength, joint efficiency of welded joint treated with optimum aging condition were found to be about 166kg/$mm^2$, 95% in 250 grade, 189kg/$mm^2$, 92% in 300 grade maraging steel sheet, respectively. 2. Tensile strength of welded joint in room temperature increased slightly by aging after repeated solution heat treatment, but the fracture mode showed a shear. 3. Joint efficiency at a temperature between $540^{\circ}C$and $600^{\circ}C$ found to be about 72% to 55%, but the joint efficiency exceeded about 90% below $300^{\circ}C$. 4. The fracture occurred in most weld metal, and the fracture surface showed a shallow dimple.
Effects of Mo content and aging conditions on the amount of retained austenite and mechanical properties of 18 Ni maraging steels were investigated. Maraging steels were fabricated with variation of Mo content. 3, 5, 7, 9% and heat treated by austenitizing at $840^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour and then aged at $480^{\circ}C$ for 0.5~100 hours. It was found that the amount of retained austenite after aolution treatment was negligible up to 5% Mo. 8 and 11 volume percents of retained austenite were obtained with 7 and 9% Mo respectively. The maximum hardness and yield strength without great loss of impact toughness were attained in the range of 4~8 hours of aging time at $480^{\circ}C$ with 5% Mo. It was concluded, as a result, that the optimum Mo content for the good combination of strength and toughness is to be 5% Mo.
Effects of Nb(Niobium) contents and solution annealing on the strength and fatigue lift of 18%Ni maraging steel commonly using in aircraft, space field, nuclear energy, and vehicle etc. were investigated. Also the fatigue life stress intensity factor were compared experiment result and FEA(finite element analysis) result. The more Nb content, the higher or the lower fatigue lift on base metal specimens or solution annealed specimens showing that the fatigue life was almost the same. The maximum stresses of X, Y, and Z axis direction showed about 2.12${\times}$10$^2$MPa, 4.40${\times}$10$^2$MPa and 1.32${\times}$10$^2$MPa respectively. The Y direction stress showed the highest because of the same direction as the loading direction. The fatigue lives showed about 7% lower FEA result than experiment result showing almost invariable error every analyzed cycle. Stress intensity factor of the FEA result was lower about 3.5∼10% than that of the experiment result showing that the longer fatigue crack length, the higher error. It considered that the cause for the difference was the modeled crack tip having always the same shape and condition regardless of the crack growth.
The effect and Condition of heat treatment on the tensile strength of welded joint was investigated in 300 grade 18% Ni-Co-Mo-Ti maraging steel sheets welded with electron beam. A good tensile strength of welded joint was obtained by following heat treatment cycle ; At $1100^{\circ}C$ the specimen was high temperature solution treated for 1 hour and then it was repeated solution treated at $900^{\circ}C$, $820^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour respectively to recrystallize the coarsened ${\gamma}$ grain. These heat treatment cycle was completed by an final aging heat treatment at $480^{\circ}C$ for 4 hour. Moreover, dissolution of dendrite, a significant decrease in seregation of Mo, Ti in weld metal were observed and also the coarsened ${\gamma}$ grain formed at $1100^{\circ}C$, $1200^{\circ}C$ changed to fine grain due to the effect of recrystallization.
Effects of aging treatment on the mechanical properties of a 18 Ni maraging steel were investigated by considering the reverted austenite. Specimens were heat treated by austenitizing at $840^{\circ}C$ for 1 hr and then aged for various times at $480^{\circ}C$ and $520^{\circ}C$. The main results obtained are as follows : 1) The amounts of reverted austenite are increased up to about 4% at $480^{\circ}C$ and about 22% at $520^{\circ}C$ with 1 to 48 hrs aging time. 2) Decreasing tendencies of impact energy and fracture toughness with increasing aging time are diminished after aging for 2 hrs at two aging temperatures of $480^{\circ}C$ and $520^{\circ}C$. 3) Peak hardness and yield strength are obtained after aging for 4 hrs at $480^{\circ}C$ and 2 hrs at $520^{\circ}C$ respectively. From the above results, it was concluded that the optimum aging condition with which showed good strength and toughness combination are given to be $480^{\circ}C$ for 4 hrs and $520^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs.
