  • Background and Objectives: The United Kingdom (UK) national standard for the closure rate for myringoplasty is 89.5% (90.6% and 84.2% for primary and revision surgeries, respectively). The average hearing gains for primary and revision myringoplasty are 9.14 dB and 7.86 dB, respectively. This study compared the myringoplasty outcomes for a single surgeon over 5 years. Subjects and Methods: Data for 68 cases were analyzed retrospectively. The outcome measures were achievement of the tympanic membrane closure and the average hearing gain or loss. Results: The overall and primary closure rates were 97% and 98%, respectively and significantly higher than the UK national standard (p=0.0210 and p=0.0287, respectively). The revision closure rate was 93%; however, it was not significantly higher than the national standard (p=0.1872). The average hearing gain was 5.18 dB. The gains for primary and revision surgeries were 5.15 dB and 5.25 dB, respectively. Conclusions: We propose that these outcomes are a result of our surgical technique, including the simultaneous use of cortical mastoidectomy in ears with discharge.

  • In this paper, a single balanced diode Mixer for the homodyne FMCW radar to detect distance and velocity of a vehicle target is designed and implemented using a microstrip line and two schottky barrier beam lead diodes. This mixer is optimally designed to have less a conversion loss within the 100 MHz bandwidth with a little LO injection power and a higher LO isolation as soon as possible through the embedded electrical length of microsrtrip line placed between the coupler and diode matching, considering together LO matching condition. The measured results show 6 dB of conversion loss, 23 dB LO/RF isolation and 3 dBm of input 1l dB, respectively.

  • In this paper, a shaped offset gregorian antenna is electrically designed for Ku band FSS antennas of the domestic communications and broadcasting satellite which will be launched in the near future. For this, a design procedure for shaped offset gregorian antennas is described in detail, and a satellite antenna is designed by using the described design procedure. The radiation characteristics of the designed antenna are evaluated and compared with the design goals. The designed antenna is found to have 1.2$^{\circ}C$ beamwidth, 38.57 dBi EOC gain, and 43.19 dBi gain at Tx frequency 12.25 GHz and 1.08$^{\circ}$ beamwidth, 38.12 dBi EOC gain, and 44.11 dBi gain at Rx frequency 14.0 GHz. And also, side lobe levels and cross-polarization levels are less than -30 dB and -33 dB, respectively. From these results the designed antenna is found to be able to use for the domestic satellite FSS antennas.

  • This paper presents a 24-GHz frequency-modulated continuous wave(FMCW) radar transceiver with two Rx and one Tx channels in 65-nm complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor(CMOS) process and implemented it on a radar system using the developed transceiver chip. The transceiver chip includes a $14{\times}$ frequency multiplier, low-noise amplifier, down-conversion mixer, and power amplifier(PA). The transmitter achieves >10 dBm output power from 23.8 to 24.36 GHz and the phase noise is -97.3 GHz/Hz at a 1-MHz offset. The receiver achieves 25.2 dB conversion gain and output $P_{1dB}$ of -31.7 dBm. The transceiver consumes 295 mW of power and occupies an area of $1.63{\times}1.6mm^2$. The radar system is fabricated on a low-loss Duroid printed circuit board(PCB) stacked on the low-cost FR4 PCBs. The chip and antenna are placed on the Duroid PCB with interconnects and bias, gain blocks and FMCW signal-generating circuitry are mounted on the FR4 PCB. The transmit antenna is a $4{\times}4$ patch array with 14.76 dBi gain and receiving antennas are two $4{\times}2$ patch antennas with a gain of 11.77 dBi. The operation of the radar is evaluated and confirmed by detecting the range and azimuthal angle of the corner reflectors.

  • We have studied methods of detecting attenuation of solid materials such as silicon wafer and piezoelectric $LiTaO_3$ by means of optical probing techniques. We have performed measurements of surface acoustic waves(SAW) generated from 90 degree wedge type transducer and also from inter-digital transducers(IDT). SAW of 20.0 MHz was generated on a silicon wafer from the 90 degree wedge type transducer and those of 20.8 and 14.5 MHz are generated on a $LiTaO_3$ from the IDT. Then any surface-corrugation resulted from the above SAW was investigated by He-Ne laser beams. We projected laser beams, which were modulated by an optical chopper, on the SAW of the same frequency and then measured the scattered beam by the lock-in amplifier. We modulated and synchronized both SAW and the incident laser beam as well as the phase sensitive detector(PSD) to the same frequency in order to simplify our measurement system. We obtained the attenuation coefficients of SAW to be $0.62{\sim}0.75dB/mm$(from IDT1, 20.8 MHz), and $0.60{\sim}0.72dB/mm$(from IDT2, 14.5 MHz), $0.83{\sim}1.28dB/mm$(from the wedge type), respectively.

  • The optical power splitter/couplers based on MMI(multimode interference) in GaAs/AlGaAs are studied. We presetn a design of optical power splitter/couplers, which have deeply etched multimode waveguide. The properties and fabrication tolerance on the etching depth, multimode waveguide width are simulatedusing a FD-BPM (finite difference beam propgation method). Proposed 1*N optical of designed device is 0.7dB smaller than the optical power splitter with a shallowly etched MMI section. For 0.5dB excess loss, the predicted fabrication tolerance is 0.6.mu.m on the multimode waveguide width of the 14 optical power splitter with a deeply etched MMI section. Also excess loss and uniformity of poposed 32*32 optical power coupler are below 0.3dB. The excess loss of proposed 32*32 optical power coupler is 2dB smaller than the optical power coupler with a shallowly etched MMI section. It is shown that the optical power splitters/couplers with a deeply etched mMI section have low loss, good uniformity, and improved fabriction tolerance.

  • The conventional Rotman lens antenna using a waveguide lens has the bended waveguide from the inner lens contour to the antenna element. However in this paper the improved Rotman lens antenna having a straight waveguide is proposed. By applying this technique, the beam steering antenna for BMWS application which has 3 input ports and 6 antenna elements consisted of open-ended waveguide has been designed and fabricated. From the measurement, the gain of the beam steering antenna is 15.4 ~ 17.2 dB. The direction angle is 0$^{\circ}$, +14$^{\circ}$~ +16$^{\circ}$, -15$^{\circ}$~ -16$^{\circ}$ and the side lobe level is -l0 ~ 20 dB.

  • Quantization noise of nonadaptive Linear Delta Modulation(LDM) and adaptive Constant Factor Delta Modulation(CFDM) systems is studied. The formulas for quantization noise of CFDM system are derived on the basis of the rusults of LDM. And the output signal-to-quantization noise ratios(SNR) in LDM and CFDM systems are calculated in the range of bit rates from 16[Kb/s] to 96[Kb/s]. By comparing LDM and CFDM, it is known that the adaptive DM is superior to non-adaptive DM by 8[dB] when bit rate is 20[Kb/s] and SNR advantage increases to 14[dB] when bit rate is 56[Kb/s]. All the theoretical results agree well with the experimental results.
