  • The rapid expansion of buildings and paved roads increases the risk of flood disaster in an urban area. One of the solutions can be the use of permeable pavements. This study evaluated the permeability of permeable blocks used for the roadway pavement. Joint fillers and mat sands of the investigated blocks met the corresponding standards. The flexural strength of the blocks was 5.29 MPa to meet these standards. Based on interior permeability test results after pollution, the four products evaluated were categorized into the following three levels: One for the $1^{st}$ level, one for the $2^{nd}$ level and two for the $3^{rd}$ level. From the field permeability test and pervious concrete infiltration test results nine months after their construction, all the products except one passed the quality standards of 0.1 mm/s.

  • This research dealt with the effect of steel-fiber reinforcement on the compressive strength of ultra high performance cementitious composites (UHPCC) and compared with that in normal steel-fiber reinforced concrete(SFRC). With wide range of compressive strength of UHPCC, experiments on the fiber reinforcement effect confirmed that the compressive strength in UHPCC is also improved by adding fibers as in normal SFRC. The experimental results were compared with previous researches about reinforcement effect by adding fibers, which are limited within 100MPa compressive strength. The comparison revealed the linear relationship between $f'_{cf}-f'_c$ and RI regardless of the magnitude of compressive strength, from which a general equation to express the effect of fiber reinforcement, applicable to various SFRC's with wide range of compressive strength including UHPCC.

  • Densified fuels from biomass are widely used in North America and Europe as a regenerable and clean bioenergy. In this study, the fuel characteristics and densification characteristics of Japanese larch and Hyunsasi poplar were studied using a piston-type briquetting machine. The effects of pressure, pressure holding time, species, and particle size on briquette characteristics were studied. At room temperature, the highly densified briquettes of Japanese larch and Hyunsasi poplar can be produced at a compression pressure of 110~170 MPa. The produced briquettes have densities between 0.66 and 0.94 g/$cm^3$ after 28 days of storage at room temperature. The optimum pressure holding time was found to be 12 seconds. There is a linear increase in pressure with increase in density. The densities of briquettes from Japanese larch were higher than those of briquettes from Hyunsasi poplar. Also, the coarser particle size resulted in higher densities in briquettes than the finer particle size.

  • About 1 mm thick nickel electrodeposits were obtained from nickel sulphamate baths at 40 to 60$^{\circ}C$ over the range of current densities form 5 to 25 A/$dm^2$. Deposits from above about 1.2V of cathode overpotential had randomly distributed fine grains due to a higher nucleation rate and hence had a high hardness. A deposit obtained at 0.63 V had the [110] orientation with a field oriented fine structure which yield a relatively high hardness. Deposite obtained at the intermediate overpotentials showed the [100] orientation with coarse field oriented structure whose column width tended to decrease with increasing cathode overpotential, which, in turn, gave rise to an increase in hardness. Residual stresses of the deposits measured by X-ray technique were mostly tensile but did not exceed 80 MPa, and were occasionally very small compressive. The cathode current efficiency was above 90% in all the electrolysis conditions, whereas the anode current efficiency varied from 50 to 90% with current density, bath temperature and nickel chloride concentration, among which the chloride was the most influential.

  • We investigated the change of mechanical properties for TiNi shape memory alloy by heat treatment. 6061Al matrix composites with TiNi shape memory alloy as reinforcement were fabricated by vacuum casting. TiNi alloy has the maximum tensile strength at 673K treated and there is no change of tensile strength and hardness at 448K treated. The composites, prepared by vacuum casting, showed good interface bonding by vacuum casting. It was about 3$\mu\textrm{m}$ of thickness of the diffusion layer. Tensile strength of the composite was in higher than that of 6061Al alloy as increased value of about 70MPa at room temperature and about 110MPa at 363K. We thought that the increase of the tensile strength at 363K was due to reverse transformation of the TiNi shape memory alloy.

  • Results of an experimental study on the pullout behavior of the headed reinforcement are presented. A total of 48 pullout tests was performed to evaluate pullout strengths and load-displacement behaviors in pullout of the headed bars. The square steel heads had gross area of 4 $A_{b}$ and thickness of $d_{b}$ The test program consisted of three pullout test groups: Simple and Edge pullout tests using plain concrete slabs, comparison of pullout performances between the standard hooks and the headed reinforcement, and pullout tests of headed reinforcement using reinforced concrete columns. Test variables included concrete strengths ( $f_{c}$' = 27.1MPa, 39.1MPa), reinforcing bar diameters (D16~D29), embedment depths (6 $d_{b}$~12 $d_{b}$), edge conditions, column reinforcement, and single-vs.-multiple bar pullout. Test results revealed that the heads effectively provided the pullout resistances of the deformed bars in tension. The load-displacement behaviors were similar between the 90-degree hooks and the headed reinforcement. When a multiple number of headed bars installed with small head-to-head spacings was pulled out, reinforcement designed to run across the concrete failure surface in a direction parallel to the headed bars helped improve the pullout performances of the headed reinforcement.t.ement.t.

  • Bi/CNT composite and resin/CNT were chosen to improve the mechanical properties of $YBa_2Cu_3O_7$(YBCO) superconductor. In order to elucidate the effects of Bi/CNT composite and resin/CNT in YBCO superconductors, melt texture superconductor were impregnated by mixed compound of Bi and CNT into the artificial holes parallel to the c-axis, which were drilled on the YBCO superconductor. Various amount of Bi/CNT and resin/CNT were impregnated to YBCO superconductor with different holes diameters. Typical artificial holes diameters were 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0 mm respectively. Result of three-point bending test measurement, the bending strength with resin/CNT impregnation was improved up to 59.64 MPa as compared with 50.79 MPa of resin/CNT free bulk. Resin/CNT impregnation has been found to be one of the effective ways in improving the mechanical properties of bulk superconductor.

  • The purpose of this study was to develope the environmentally favorable method of roller compacted soil concrete pavement using industrial waste red mud. Red mud was the major solid waste produced in the process of alumina extraction from bauxite(Bayer process). For recycling purpose, red mud was treated and applied to use as concrete admixtures. To this end, laboratory test such as compressive strength of soil concrete, and field test such as construction characteristics of soil concrete pavement, had been conducted. From the study results, the compressive strength of soil concrete was strongly related to its matrix proportion and compaction energy. The optimum mix proportion was comprised of cement 300 $kg/m^3$, water 110 $kg/m^3$, fine aggregate 600 $kg/m^3$, course aggregate 1400 $kg/m^3$, red mud admixture 50 $kg/m^3$ and compaction energy above 2.86 $cm-kgf/m^3$. The $7^{th}$-day and $28^{th}$-day mean compressive strength of soil concrete were 43.8 MPa and 53.3 MPa each under the optimum condition. Pavement application of soil concrete using red mud admixture indicated that the proposed method was simple in case of construction and showed a good surface texture.

  • The squeeze casting of a Mg-5wt%Al-0.6wt%Zr alloy was carried out to investigate the conditions for the formation and the prevention of macrodefects, such as macrosegregation and shrinkage defects. The effects of the process parameters, the applied pressure, the die temperature, and the pouring temperature on the formation of macrodefcts were investigated in correlation with the evolution of macrostructure. Three types of macrodefects were found; macrosegregation only, shrinkage defects only, both macrosegregation and shrinkage defects. It was found that the pouring temperature, the die temperature, and the applied pressure are closely related to the formation of macrodefects. Sound castings without macrosegregation and shrinkage defects can be obtained under the conditions of 80 MPa$730^{\circ}C$$760^{\circ}C$, and $180^{\circ}C$<$T_D$<$250^{\circ}C$.
