Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify factors influencing premature infants who are small for their gestational ago. Methods : The medical records of 1,010 premature infants of 26 to 35 weeks of gestational age born at Il-Sin Christian Hospital, Busan from January 2000 to August 2006 were reviewed. We collected data on gestational age, birth weight, infant gender, birth order, maternal age and previous abortion history and analyzed the factors influencing premature infants who were small for their gestational ago at birth. Results : In our study more female than male (P=0.042) in premature infants who were small for their gestational ago were born from mothers aged younger than 20 or older than 35 (P=0.041). But association between smallness for gestational age and birth order or maternal previous abortion history was statistically insignificant (P=0.228, P=0.129). Conclusion : Considering the association of birth weight and the survival rate of premature infants, it is thought that maternal age had an influence on the survival rate of premature infants. Social and political support to lower the teenager pregnancy and older pregnancy is expected to increase the survival rate of premature infants and the birth of healthy normal neonates.
Purpose : This study aimed to assess the prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia in children from low-income families in Gunpo and to evaluate whether economic status affects the prevalence of obesity. Methods : Between October 2007 and March 2008, 341 children (167 girls and 174 boys; age, 6 to 13 years) were enrolled in this study. All these children came from families who earned minimum wages and who were supported by government. We measured height, weight, and blood pressure and performed laboratory examinations, including total cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglycerides. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated using weight and height. We compared the prevalence of obesity, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia in children from low-income families with the prevalence of these maladies found in other studies. Results : Prevalence of obesity ($BMI{\geq}95^{th}$) was 7.1%. Prevalence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia was 8.2% and 16.7%, respectively. In the obese group, prevalence of hypertension and hyperlipidemia was 25.0% and 45.8%, respectively. Obesity and hyperlipidemia were slightly more frequent in our study than those found in other reports, and the prevalence of hypertension in the obese group was very high compared with statistics from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (25% vs. 19.5%) and those from other reports. Conclusion : Low-income status was associated with an increased incidence of obesity, hyperlipidemia, and hypertension. Hypertension showed an especially strong association with economic status, which seemed to correlate with genetic, environmental, and dietary effects.
Despite improvements in vaccine coverage, a resurgence of measles has been reported, especially in the infant and adult populations in recent years. We conducted a systematic review of seroprevalence studies conducted in the Western Pacific Region (WPR) to provide insights into seropositivity trends in different countries. This systematic review aimed to collect data from all available measles seroprevalence studies to characterize the differences in population immunity against measles in different countries. We searched the online databases PubMed and Embase to identify: 1) observational studies that investigated seroprevalence in all age groups, and 2) results reported as antibody levels. The following variables were extracted from different study arms: paper identification (title, first author, publication year), inclusion and exclusion criteria, study site, age of subjects, number of subjects, country/area, population, methods, and seropositivity (%). The search yielded a total of 69 studies included in the review. Among the 1-6-year-old group, seropositivity remained relatively high, at 81-100% in China, 86-94% in Korea, and 77-91% in Australia. In adolescents aged 7-18-years old, seropositivity was relatively constant in China and Australia over time; however, a decreasing trend was noted in Korea in 2011 (66%), 2014 (69%), and 2014 (50%) in this age group. A similar downward trend was observed among Korean adults aged 19-39 years in 2011 (74%), 2019 (71%), and 2019 (64%). Children are likely to be protected by universal vaccination programs in WPR countries and regions. However, susceptible individuals with waned immunity may be present among the adult population.

Purpose : To evaluate the correlation between serum methotrexate (MTX) peak levels and clinical outcome of osteosarcoma, as well as to determine the correlation of these levels with the histologic response and event-free survival (EFS). Methods : To maintain the homogeneity of the study population, we selected 52 patients with localized extremity osteosarcoma who had received two cycles of neoadjuvant chemotherapy consisting of high-dose (HD) MTX ($12g/m^2$), cisplatin ($100mg/m^2$), and doxorubicin ($60mg/m^2$). Results : Totally, 204 courses of HD MTX were administered. The serial MTX levels ($mean{\pm}SE$) at 4 h (peak), 24 h, 48 h, and 72 h were $1292.14{\pm}12.83{\mu}m$, $9.29{\pm}3.89{\mu}m$, $1.73{\pm}1.37{\mu}m$, and $0.58{\pm}0.44{\mu}m$, respectively. The peak MTX serum level was $1292.14{\pm}12.83{\mu}m$. Neither the continuous average MTX peak level nor the dichotomized MTX peak level was related to the histologic response. However, the patients with a high 24-h MTX level ($3.4{\mu}m$) had a poor histologic response (P=0.044). An inverse relationship was observed between MTX levels and survival: the EFS was better in the patients with a mean MTX peak level of less than $1,400{\mu}m$ (P=0.002) and mean 24-h MTX level of less than $3.4{\mu}m$ (P=0.011). Conclusion : The inverse correlation between the MTX level and the outcome is an unexpected finding. Further study on the pharmacokinetics of MTX is required to substantiate our findings and elucidate the mechanism involved.
Purpose : The purpose of this study is to find out the changing pattern of drug or foreign body ingestion between 1990s and 2000s in Wonju Christian Hospital, which is located in one of the most rapidly urbanizing cities in Korea. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with acute drug intoxication and foreign body ingestion from January 1991 to December 1994 and from January 2001 to December 2004. We performed clinical analysis and compared the results of the 1990s and 2000s. Results : There were 43 cases of acute drug intoxication in the 1990s, and 35 cases in the 2000s. Foreign body ingestion was 47 cases in the 1990s and 22 cases in the 2000s. The ingested foreign bodies were chiefly coins (46.8 percent), Weiqi chips (14.9 percent), plastic toys (6.4 percent) and others (31.9 percent) in the 1990s. In the 2000s, others (58.2 percent) were the most commonly ingested foreign body with mercury batteries (23.8 percent), nails (9 percent), pins (9 percent) following. The most common cause of drug intoxication was medical drugs (37.2 percent) others (23.2 percent), agricultural agents (13.9 percent), carbon monoxide (11.6 percent), rodenticide (9.3 percent), insecticide (9.3 percent) in the 1990s. In the 2000s the most common causes were others (34.3 percent), medical drug (31.4 percent), agriculture agents (20 percent), detergent (11.4 percent), insecticide (2.9 percent) and carbon monoxide (2.9 percent). The highest incidence age group was the 1-3 year old group, both in acute drug intoxication and foreign body ingestion. There were no changes in the incidence age group between the 1990s and the 2000s. Conclusion : There were some significant changes in the cause of acute drug intoxication and foreign body ingestion between the 1990s and 2000s. New education programs for preventing acute drug intoxication and foreign body ingestion are important and necessary.

Since maize (Zea mays L.) originated in central and south America, it requires warm climate conditions throughout its growing season. Growth halts when night-time temperatures drop below 10℃, and the plant may die if temperature reach -1.7℃. Thus, temperature should be maintained between 10 and 30℃ from seeding to maturity. The germination temperature for maize should be at least 8-11℃, whit an optimal range 32-34℃. Since temperature significantly affects the germination rate and period, it plays a crucial role in maize growth. In this study, we evaluated the quantity and feed value of 11 major varieties to determine those best suited for maize cultivation as feed in higher latitude, specifically in Democratic People's of Republic of Korea, below 38 degrees north. A cultivation test was also conducted in Suwon in Republic of Korea, to assess adaptability in areas south of Mt. Suyang. Among the varieties tested, Shinhwangok2 reached silking the fastest, in 65 days, while Gwangpyeongok took the longest at 75 days. The stem length of all varieties exceeded 230 cm. Gwangpyeongok had the tallest stems, while Daanok and Shinhwangok2ho displayed the highest ear ratios. Dacheongok presented the highest values in both dry matter and TDN quantity, with 31,420 kg/ha and 21,66 kg/ha respectively. Pyeonggangok had the highest crude protein content at 8.0%. TDN (%) ranged from 57-68%, with Hwangdaok reaching up to 68%. Based on these findings, Dacheongok and Pyeonggangok appear to be the most suitable varieties for cultivation in terms of both quantity and feed value.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the polymorphisms of the TNF-alpha promotor gene, its susceptibility to Kawasaki disease (KD) and to assess whether the TNF-alpha promotor gene polymorphism was related the risk of coronary artery lesions (CALs). Methods : From January 2003 to January 2007, 51 children (30 boys and 21 girls) with KD and 48 children forming an age-matched control group were studied. DNA from the peripheral blood of all the children was sampled, and the DNA polymorphisms of the 5' flanking regions of the TNF-alpha promoter gene at position -308 [guanine (G) to adenine (A)] were determined by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP). Then, the relationship between KD and the TNF-alpha promotor gene polymorphisms was evaluated. Results : The A allele frequency of the -308 site of the TNF-alpha promotor gene was 17.6% (9/51) for children with KD and 6.8% (3/48) for the control group children, but this result was not statistically significant. Twenty-four patients experienced CALs within 60 days after the onset of symptoms. KD children with TNF-alpha -308 A allele had lower frequencies of CALs (12.5% versus 22.2%, P>0.05). Conclusion : The DNA polymorphism of the -308 site TNF-alpha gene was not associated with susceptibility to KD and a risk of CALs. Multicenter, large-scale randomized controlled trials are needed for further study.

Propose : In this study, we evaluated whether powder on surgical gloves is a cause of postpuncture backpain in children. Mothods : In 164 children with meningitis between July and September 1997, we did not remove powder from surgical gloves. However, in 149 children with menigitis between May and October 2001 the powder was removed from the surgical gloves. Results : Out of the 164 patients in 1997, 41 cases(25.00%) were found to have postdural puncture backpain. On the other hand, out of 149 patients in 2001, with whom we used gloves from which the powder was removed, we found only 8 patients(5.36%) with postdural puncture backpain. Conclusion : We conclude that the powder on surgical gloves is one of the main causes of postdural puncture backpain in children.

This study investigated the characteristics and factors affecting inpatient infants, children, and adolescents who experienced falling, using NHDIS data from 2008 through 2017, The study analyzed data of 116 patients who were under 18 and who experienced injuries (KSCD, S00-S99) by falling (KSCD, W00-W19). Frequency analysis, cross-tabulations, and multiple regression analysis were conducted, using SPSS 23. There were more boys than girls, and most of the falls occurred at the ages of over one to under six years old. Most of the children had respiratory diseases, and most had open wounds or bruises due to falling. Also, most of the falls were related to the bed. In the factor analysis, age (β=.318), the main diagnosis (β=.231), and injury (β=.169) except gender affected falling. This suggests that it is necessary to conduct fall prevention education for children, considering the developmental stage characteristics and age group. It is necessary to screen the risk group such as children with a disease with relatively less restriction of activities or with a hyperactive disorder, and to develop a related manual. Hopefully, the results will be used as the basic data for fall prevention education and creating a fall prevention manual according to the characteristics of children's developmental stage for patients who need hospitalization, their caregivers, and the relevant medical team.
In Japan, the number of late night animations has increased from the 2000s. In 2010, it exceeded the number of other Japanese animations playing between 6:00 to 23:00 (pre-late night). People watching these late night animations were mostly adolescents or older. Late night animations involve various niche themes, however, the ranges of the main characters' actions of these stories were narrower and more limited compared to the pre-late night animations. The causes for these differences in the scales of the settings were found by comparing the late night and pre-late night animations. The most popular animations from these two time slots were used in the analysis. Firstly, the main characters' ways of approaching their goals were analyzed. Secondly, the settings and directions that the main characters used were analyzed. Lastly, the main characters' degree of interactions with other people was analyzed. As a result of the analysis, the main characters' goals from the late night animations were often found to be commonplace and they tended to achieve their goals by very realistic means. In addition to that, the stories of these main characters revolved around small and familiar communities. Thus, their connections with people were comparatively smaller than those of pre-late night animations and were based upon shared interests. In other words, the differences in the scales of the settings between the two types of animations resulted from the stories of the late night animations revolving mainly around reality, communities, and relationships within the communities.
