A Study on Subchronic Inhalation Toxicity of 1-Chloropropane

  • This study was conducted to measure toxicity of 1-chloropropane (CAS No. : 540-54-5). According to the OECD Test Guideline 413 (Subchronic inhalation toxicity: 90-day study), SD rats were exposed to 0, 310, 1,250, and 5,000 ppm of 1-chloropropane for 6 h/day, 5 day/week for 13 weeks via whole-body inhalation. Mortality, clinical signs, body weights, food consumption, motor activity, ophthalmoscopy, hematology, serum chemistry, urinalysis, organ weights, gross and histopathological findings were compared between control and all tested groups. No mortality or remarkable clinical signs were examined during the study. No gross lesions or adverse effects on body weight, food consumption, motor activity, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, organ weights were observed in any of male or female rats in all tested groups. In serum biochemistry, glucose was significantly decreased in males of 1,250 and 5,000 ppm groups compared to control group in dose-dependent relationship. In histopathological examination, vacuolation of acinar cells was observed in pancreas of all male and female groups exposed to 1-chloropropane. In conclusion, no observable adverse effect level (NOAEL) was considered to be below 310 ppm/6 h/day, 5 day/week for rats.

  • We have studied the Infrared Multiphoton Dissociation (IRMPD) of 1-bromo-3-chloropropane by using the pulsed $CO_2$ laser. The product yields and the HCl/HBr branching ratios in IRMPD of $BrCH_2CH_2CH_2Cl$ are studied under the focused beam geometry as a function of buffer gas (He) pressure, laser energy, and photolysing wavelength. It is observed that the total dissociation yield has a laser energy dependence of 1.8-2.0 power order and the branching ratio is very slightly dependent on the pulse energy for the laser lines employed. The dependences of total dissociation yield and branching ratio on the buffer gas pressures show that the dissociation yield monotonically decreases and the branching ratio slightly decreases with the increase of the buffer gas pressure. The Energy-Grained Master Equation (EGME) was applied to explain the laser pulse energy and the buffer gas pressure(He) dependence of the dissociation yield and the branching ratio.

  • The ether-type chitin derivatives were synthesized by reacting chitin with chloropropane, propylene oxide and chloropropane diol to form propyl chitin(PPC), hydroxypropyl chitin(HPC) and dihydroxypropyl chitin(DHPC). These derivatives formed a lyotropic cholesteric liquid crystallinity in concentrations over 30 wt% solution in formic acid (99%). Cast films from liquid crystalline solutions were degraded by lysozyme in pseudo-extra cellular tluid(PECF)solutions, at pH 1.2, pH 6.7 and pH 8.2. Three ether-type chitin derivatives rapidly degraded within the first week, and showed a decreased mechanical strength in neutral pH range. Dihydroxypropyl chitin showed the best biodegradation among these derivatives.

  • The $\beta$-chitin derivatives were synthesized by reacting $\beta$-chitin with chloropropane, propyleneoxide and chloropropane diol to form propyl chitin (PPC), hydroxypropyl chitin (HPC) and dihydroxypropyl chitin (DHPC), respectively. Cast films from $\beta$-chitin and $\beta$-chitin derivatives solutions degraded by Iyrozyme in pseudo-extrra cellular fluid (PECF) solutions, at pH1.2, pH6.7 and pH8.2. Chitin derivatives rapidly degraded compared with virgin $\beta$-chitin within the first week. DHPC showed the best biodegradation among these derivatives.

  • Experiments were carried out to know the effects of emulsifiable DBCP, (Dibromo Chloropropane) for control of the citrus-root nematode, Tylenchulus semipenetrans in Orchards of chinese citron and mandarine orange for four years of 1967-1970. Nematode population density decreased as the amount of DBCP increased. In mandarine orange orchard, the nematode population density decreased after second treatment mainly because of bad drainage of the soil, while in Chinese citron orchard, it fell off sharply after just one treatment since the soil was well drained. Yields of Chinese citron increased as much as $26\%$ in 4.4l/10a injection, 1$18\%$ in 4.4l/10a drench; yields of mandarine orange increased as much as $11\%$ in 4.41/10a injection and $13\%$ in 4.4l/10a drench.

  • The analysis of n-butylbenzene and 1,2-dibromo-3-chloropropane (DBCP) as volatile organic compounds in biota samples was performed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry-selected ion monitoring mode. The target compounds, n-butylbenzene and DBCP, in biota samples were extracted by headspace solid phase microextraction (SPME) with $100{\mu}m$ polydimethyl siloxane (PDMS) fiber and purge & trap method. The extraction recoveries of these compounds obtained by SPME was 85.8% for n-butylbenzene and 92.4% for DBCP, respectively. Each value of method detection limit were $0.15{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.05{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. While in the case of purge & trap method, the extraction recovery was 115.2% for n-butylbenzene, 80.9% for DBCP and method detection limit were $0.04{\mu}g/kg$ and $0.70{\mu}g/kg$, respectively. The extraction yields and detection limits of these compounds obtained by purge & trap were equivalent to those by SPME.
