Spud-can is used for fixing jack-up rig on seabed. It needs to be inserted up to the required depth during the installation process to secure enough soil reaction and prevent overturning accidents. On the other hand, it should be extracted from seabed soils as fast as possible during the extraction process to minimize the corresponding operational cost. To achieve such goals, spud-can may be equipped with water-jetting system including monitoring and control. To develop such a smart spud-can, a reliable numerical simulation tool is essential and it has also to be validated against physical model tests. In this regard, authors developed a numerical simulation tool by using a commercial program ANSYS with extended Drucker-Prager (EDP) formula. Authors also conducted small-scale (1/100) physical model tests for verification and calibration purpose. By using the numerical model, a systematic parametric study is conducted both for sand and K(kaolin)-clay with varying important soil parameters and the best estimated soil properties of the physical test are deduced. Then, by using the selected soil properties, the numerical and experimental results for a sand/K-clay multi-layer case are cross-checked to show reasonably good agreement. The validated numerical model will be useful in the next-stage study which includes controllable water-jetting.
This study was designed to examine, applying Rasch analysis based on item response theory, the questionnaires of the Activities-Specific Balance Confidence (ABC) scale for the elderly. The subjects were 99 institutional older adults and clients of social welfare facilities. The subjects (17 men, 72 women) ranged in age from 65 to 94 years (mean age 76.5 yrs). The Winsteps software was used to assess whether the ABC scale fits the Rasch model, to estimate the score and to refine the rating scale. The results are as follows. Twenty-two subjects were excluded as misfit persons. Four items were found to be misfits and the order of difficulty of the remaining 12 items was rearranged. Their balance confidence is indicated by -.64~1.12 logit, and the transformation formula is score=[(logit score+2.76)/(2.76+3.48)]${\times}$100. The most difficult item was "Walk outside in icy sidewalks" and the easiest item was "Walk around house." In conclusion, the ABC scale for the elderly has been proven reliable and valid. Therefore, it is expected to be used as an effective examination tool for treatment planning and screening for older adults.

Mill scale, an iron waste, was used to separate magnetite particles for the adsorption of phosphate from aqueous solution. Mill scale has a layered structure composed of wustite (FeO), magnetite ($Fe_3O_4$), and hematite ($Fe_2O_3$). Because magnetite shows the highest magnetic property among these iron oxides, it can be easily separated from the crushed mill scale particles. Several techniques were employed to characterize the separated particles. Mill scale-derived magnetite particles exhibited a strong uptake affinity to phosphate in a wide pH range of 3-7, with the maximum adsorptive removal of 100%, at the dosage of 1 g/L, pH 3-5. Langmuir isotherm model well described the equilibrium data, exhibiting maximum adsorption capacities for phosphate up to 4.95 and 8.79 mg/g at 298 and 308 K, respectively. From continuous operation of the packed-bed column reactor operated with different EBCT (empty bed contact time) and adsorbent particle size, the breakthrough of phosphate started after 8-22 days of operation. After regeneration of the column reactor with 0.1N NaOH solution, 95-98% of adsorbed phosphate could be detached from the column reactor.
A π-shaped composite deck in the form of an open section is a type of blunt body that is highly susceptible to wind loads. To investigate its vortex-induced vibration (VIV) performance, a large-scale (1/20) section model of a cable-stayed bridge with a main span of 650 m was tested in a wind tunnel. The vibration suppression mechanism of the countermeasures was analyzed using computational fluid dynamic. Experimental results demonstrate that the vertical and torsional VIVs of the original section can be suppressed by combining guide plates with a tilt angle of 35° and bottom central stabilizing plates as aerodynamic countermeasures. Numerical results indicate that the large-scale vortex under the deck separates into smaller vortices, resulting in the disappearance of the von Kármán vortex street in the wake zone because the countermeasures effectively suppress the VIVs. Furthermore, a full-bridge aeroelastic model with a scale of 1/100 was constructed and tested to evaluate the wind resistance performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed countermeasures.

This paper presents the ground surface potential profiles and hazard voltages around the metallic structure connected to a small-sized model ground electrode. Because it is very difficult to draw valid conclusions concerning a general grounding problem from actual field data, scale model tests can be used to determine the touch and stop voltages and surface potential profiles around ground electrode. In this work, a hemispherical vessel with a diameter of 1,100[mm] was employed to simulate uniform soil. As a result, the ground surface potential around the ground electrode was significantly raised In particular the ground surface potential at the just upper point of ground rod was higher than other points. When the buried depth of ground rod is increased, the ground surface potential and step voltage were lowered but the touch voltage was elevated.
A New pre-loading system, through which a large pre-load could be charged was developed and applied to the braced wall in order to stabilize the adjacent tunnel. A pre-load larger than the designated axial force of bracing was imposed to prevent the horizontal displacement of the braced wall during the ground excavation. For this purpose, real scale model tests (1/10) were conducted, without and with pre-load on braced wall. And numerical analyses were performed for both the cases without and with pre-load, which were half (50%) and full (100%) respectively, and larger scale of the design axial farce of bracing. FEM program called PLAXIS was used for numerical analysis. As a result, it was found that the stability of the existing tunnel adjacent to the braced wall could be greatly enhanced when the horizontal displacement of braced wall was reduced by applying a pre-load, which was larger than the designated axial force of bracing.

We investigate the distribution of likelihood ratio test(LRT) of null hypothesis a sample is from single gamma with unknown shape and scale against the alternative hypothesis a sample is from a mixture of two gammas, each with unknown scale and unknown (but equal) scale. To obtain stable maximum likelihood estimates(MLE) of a mixture of two gamma distributions, the EM(Dempster, Laird, and Robin(1977))and Modified Newton(Jensen and Johansen(1991)) algorithms were implemented. Based on EM, we made a simple structure likelihood equation for each parameter and could obtain stable solution by Modified Newton Algorithms. Simulation study was conducted to investigate the distribution of LRT for sample size n = 25, 50, 75, 100, 50, 200, 300, 400, 500 with 2500 replications. To determine the small sample distribution of LRT, I considered the model of a gamma distribution with shape parameter equal to 1 + f(n) and scale parameter equal to 2. The simulation results indicate that the null distribution is essentially invariant to the value of the shape parameter. Modeling of the null distribution indicates that it is well approximated by a gamma distribution with shape parameter equal to the quantity $0.927+1.18/\sqrt{n}$ and scale parameter equal to 2.16.
Objective : The authors evaluated the accuracies and ease of use of several commonly used microanastomosis training models (synthetic tube, chicken wing, and living rat model). Methods : A survey was conducted among neurosurgeons and neurosurgery residents at a workshop held in 2009 at the authors' institute. Questions addressed model accuracy (similarity to real vessels and actual procedures) and practicality (availability of materials and ease of application in daily practice). Answers to each question were rated using a 5-point scale. Participants were also asked what types of training methods they would chose to improve their skills and to introduce the topic to other neurosurgeons or neurosurgery residents. Results : Of the 24 participants, 20 (83.3%) responded to the survey. The living rat model was favored for model accuracy (p<0.001; synthetic tube $-0.95{\pm}0.686$, chicken wing, $0.15{\pm}0.587$, and rat, $1.75{\pm}0.444$) and the chicken wing model for practicality (p<0.001; synthetic tube $-1.55{\pm}0.605$, chicken wing, $1.80{\pm}0.523$, and rat,$1.30{\pm}0.923$). All (100%) chose the living rat model for improving their skills, and for introducing the subject to other neurosurgeons or neurosurgery residents, the chicken wing and living rat models were selected by 18 (90%) and 20 (100%), respectively. Conclusion : Of 3 methods examined, the chicken wing model was found to be the most practical, but the living rat model was found to represent reality the best. We recommend the chicken wing model to train surgeons who have mastered basic techniques, and the living rat model for experienced surgeons to maintain skill levels.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to identify the relationships between family function and successful aging of vulnerable elderly using the circumplex model. Methods: The participants were the elderly (N=401) who were over 65 years old living in H city under the National Livelihood Security Act. Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scale III and Successful Aging Instrument were used. Results: The family function perceived by the study subjects was average $43.20{\pm}16.62$ out of maximum 100 points. According to the analysis on family types suggested by circumplex model, there were 183 people for balance family (45.6%) and 218 people (54.4%) for extreme family. The total points on successful aging were $1.67{\pm}0.37$ out of 3 points. When the difference in points on the Successful Aging instrument were analyzed according to the scores on the Family Adaptability and Cohesion Scale those points of the balanced family were statistically significant (t=2.087, p=.038). Conclusion: In case of the balanced family type, the level of perceiving successful aging was relatively higher. For the improvement of family function, it is advised that the successful aging perception among vulnerable elderly can be uplifted through a program that enables effective communication with other family members.
The hazard assessment in which the potential hazard factors in the buildings are investigated and the scale of the hazard is analysed should be performed first in order to prevent personal and material damages due to building fire. In this study, the building fire hazard are assessed using 822-item checklist, for the qualitative evaluation of which the main factors are classified into 10 items, yielding 100 scale points with some weighting. It is shown that present model is applicable for the assessment model by actual assessment of existing building. Also the checklist is prepared in itemized questionnaire from easy assessment of building fire hazard. Therefore, the present model will be helpful for those working in fire prevention, who are suffering from the lack of manifest evaluation model for the fire prevention assessment so far in Korea.
