  • Nine species of powdery mildew fungi were examined to understand the change in size of conidia in relation to air temperature. Of these, Sphaerotheca aphanis, S. fusca and S. pannosa showed constant value of conidial sizes regardless of changes in air temperature. The length/width ratio in the conidia of Erysiphe, artemisiae and E. sordida increased as the air temperature rose. E. cichoracearum gave the result against that shown in the above two species of Erysiphe. The conidia of Microsphaera pseudolonicerae became decreased in their width as the air temperature fell. The length/width ratio of conidia was markedly increased. M. alphitoides and M. robiniae showed variable size measurements in conidia regardless of changes in air temperature and studies for it needed for additional examination in future.

  • An isolate of the prospective hyperparasite, Ampelomyces quisqualis 94013 (AQ94013) was selected for the use of biological control of cucumber powdery mildew caused by Sphaerotheca fuliginea. Examination for the parasitism processes by scanning electron microscopy and light microscopy showed that conidia of AQ49013 germinated on conidia, conidiophores and hyphae of Sphaerotheca fuliginea four hours after inoculation. Appressorium-like structures were developed and attached to the hyphae of S. fuliginea seventeen hours after inoculation. Hyphae of AQ94013 penetrated into hyphae of S. fuliginea twenty-four hours after inoculation. Pycnidia of AQ94013 were produced in the hyphae and the basal part of conidiophores of S. fuliginea fourty four hours after inoculation. The pycnidia of AQ94013 matured foully eight hours after inoculation, and the conidia were discharged from the ostioles of the pycnidia fifty two hours after the inoculation. At the same time, hyphae and conidiophores of S. fuliginea were distorted and died. Also, concentrated culture filtrate and culture filtrate of AQ94013 had not suppressed the cucumber powdery mildew fungus as water treatment. Therefore, mode of action of AQ94013 was assumed to be parasitism on powdery mildew fungi.

  • Powdery mildew fungi from 246 different species of host plants were collected at Kangwon province during 1989-1993 years. They were identified and classified into 13 genera and 83 species by examining various morphological characteristics of taxonomic value. Most of host plants were infected with one species of powdery mildew fungus, but eight plant species with two or three different mildews. Among 246 host plants collected, 43 species were added as the new host plants of powdery mildew fungi in Korea. Two Oidium spp. from Hibiscus and several Compositae plants were described to suggest their taxonomic problems.

  • Sphaerotheca fuliginea has previously been recorded as a powdery mildew fungus on dahlia (Dahlia pinnata) in Korea. Six collections of the dahlia mildew by the authors since 1993, however, show that the fungus does not contain conspicuous fibrosin bodies and has sinuate edge lines on conidiophores. These characters clearly indicate that the fungus causing the powdery mildew on dahlia in Korea is Erysiphe cichoracearum. On the other hand, one plant of dahlia grown in a pot was found to be infected with S. fusca (= S. fuliginea s. lat.). It is supposed to be unusual. Therefore, two species of dahlia mildew fungi are distributed and E. cichoracearum is the main cause of dahlia mildew in Korea.

  • In October 2022, common Asian cowpea (Vigna nakashimae) powdery mildew disease was investigated at Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea (36°40'12.7"N,126°51'36.4"E). The disease mainly occurred on the front of the leaves, and weak powdery mildew disease occurred on the back side of leaf. The chasmothecia was identified on the back side of the leaf. Analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence and 28S large subunit sequence, along with the morphological characteristics of the anamorph and teleomorph of the causal fungus identified as Podosphaera xanthii. This is the first time in Korea to report common Asian cowpea (Vigna nakashimae) powdery mildew disease caused by Podospaera xanthii.

  • Three species of powdery mildew (Erysiphales) on eggplant (Solanum melongena L.) have been listed in Korea, namely Erysiphe cichoracearum (now genus Golovinomyces), Leveillula taurica, and Sphaerotheca fusca (now genus Podosphaera; syn. Podosphaera xanthii). Since E. cichoracearum was recorded on eggplant for the first time in Korea in 1969, it has been regarded as a major powdery mildew agent on that plant. In 1998, the causal agent of powdery mildew on eggplant was recorded as L. taurica, then as S. fusca in 2002. During our extensive field surveys in Korea, we collected 22 samples of eggplant powdery mildews. Our microscopic observations and molecular sequence analyses showed that all of our samples belonged to the genus Podosphaera, in the absence of either E. cichoracearum or L. taurica, suggesting that P. xanthii is the dominant agent of powdery mildew disease on eggplants in Korea. As there have been no additional findings on L. taurica after the first report on the species, it seems to be a minor species that is rarely found in greenhouses. The presence of E. cichoracearum (syn. Golovinomyces cichoracearum s. lat.) on eggplants is questionable, as the morphological characteristics of E. cichoracearum in the original description of the Korean collection deviate from the morphological variations of this species. In addition, no herbarium material of E. cichoracearum remains. Consequently, it seems that P. xanthii is the main species of powdery mildew on eggplants, whereas L. taurica occurs rarely on eggplants, in Korea. This review provides the historical and recent taxonomy of eggplant powdery mildews in detail.

  • Control efficacies of mixing of powdery mildew biofungicides with other control agents against major or fungal diseases of cucumber were investigated. Control efficacies against cucumber powdery mildew were quite different according to the kinds of biofungicides applied but those of powdery mildew biofungicides were increased by mixing application of two biofungicides. More than 80% of control efficacies on powdery and downy mildews of cucumber were obtained by mixing application of a powdery mildew biofungicide Bacillus subtilis KB-401 and a downy mildew chemical fungicide dimethomorph. Similarly, control efficacies on powdery and downy mildews of cucumber were 95% and 70% by mixing application of a powdery mildew biofungicide Bacillus subtilis KB-401 and cooking oils and yolk mixture, respectively.

  • Powdery mildew diseases previously unrecorded in Korea were noticed on four species of ornamental trees. Field observations on each disease were described and the causal fungi were identified. Powdery mildew of Symplocos chinensis for. pilosa was found to occur mildly, especially on plants growing in shade. The causal fungus was identified as Microsphaera nomurae U. Braun. Cornus florida was found to be infected with Microsphaera pulchra Cooke & Peck and supposed to be epidemic in nursery. Powdery mildew of Malus baccata occurred on young leaves and herbaceous stems in nursery. The causal fungus was classified as Podosphaera leucotricha (Ellis & Everh.) Salmon. Powdery mildew of Ulmus macrocarpa was found to occur in autumn and severe on young shoots. Uncinula kenjiana Homma was identified as the causal fungus.
