  • The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence(OH$\^$*/) image and its Abel inverted image to investigate the flame structure at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure and NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ∼341.8㎐, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. Also an additional information on active control to suppress the combustion instabilities was obtained. For lean premixed combustion, strong correlation between OH$\^$*/ and NOx emissions was expected largely due to the exponential dependence of thermal NOx mechanism on flame temperature.

  • The objective of this study is a qualitative comparison between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence ($OH{\ast}$) image and its Abel inversion image at different phase of the oscillating pressure field. PIV(Particle Image Velocimetry) measurements were conducted under non-reacting conditions to see the global flow structure. Also NOx emission was measured to investigate the effect of fuel-air premixing on combustion instability and emission characteristics. Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor operating on natural gas. Combustion instabilities in present study exhibited a longitudinal mode with a dominant frequency of ${\sim}341.8$ Hz, which corresponded to a quarter wave mode of combustor. Heat release and pressure waves were in-phase when instability occurred. Results gave an insight about the location where the strong coherence of pressure and heat release existed. • The characteristics of combustion and flow for a lean premixed flame in lab-scale gas turbine combustor was studied through experiment and numerical analysis. From the experiment, flame structure and heat release rate were obtained from OH emission spectroscopy. Qualitative comparisons were made line-integrated OH chemiluminescence image and abel-transformed one. NOx analyzer was implemented to get the characteristic of NOx exhaust from the combustor. From the numerical analysis, the thermal distribution and characteristic of recirculation zone with the change of fuel-air mixing degree, the characteristic of methane distribution with equivalence ratio in the combustor respectively. Total heat release rate is increased with increasing equivalence ratio. Thermal Nox is reduced with increasing fuel-air mixing degree. Increasing equivalence ratio results in the decrease of the size of reaction zone and alteration of the position of the reaction zone into the entrance of the combustor.

  • Behaviors of lean premixed flame of propane/air and methane/air flame anchored by a pilot flame in a tube were investigated experimentally varying the mean velocity from 10 to 140 cm/s and the equivalence ratio from 0.45 to 0.8. Behaviors of both flames are divided into five regions of stable, flash-back, tail-out, flickering and vibrating. General characteristics of each region and Le number effect are investigated. Two main instabilities, flickering and vibration, are both unstable but the instability mechanism, the frequency and the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are different. In the edge of the vibrating region, pressure fluctuation repeats generation and extinction. Repeated growth and decrease of the amplitude of pressure fluctuation are explained by Rayleigh#s index.

  • This paper deals with an acoustic model for a lean premixed gas turbine combustor composed of three stages: premixing chamber, nozzle and flame tube. Our model is given as an acoustic transfer function whose input is a heat release rate perturbation and output is a velocity perturbation at a flame location. We have shown that the resonance frequencies are functions of three round-trip frequencies of acoustic wave in each stage, and area ratios between stages. By analyzing poles of the acoustic transfer function, we could characterize resonant frequencies and their dependency on various system parameters of a combustor. It was found that our analytic findings match with existing numerical and experimental results in literature.

  • The combustion characteristics for the low NOx 50 kW-class gas turbine combustor have been experimentally investigated. In order to achieve the premixing and the lean burn combustion, the geometries of the primary zone including premixed chamber were modified from conventional combustor. The centerline profiles of CO and NO concentration, and temperature were measured for the premixed combustors with or without dilution holes in the liner. The effects of the pilot fuel injection rate and air dilution on flame stabilization and pollutant (CO, NO) emission are discussed in detail.

  • Experiments were carried out in an atmospheric pressure, lab-scale gas turbine combustor to see the effect of partial premixing on unstable flame structure and Nox emission characteristics. The swirl angle is 45 deg., fuel-air mixing degrees were varied 0, 50 and 100% respectively at equivalence ratio ranging from 0.53 to 0.79. The evolution of phased-locked OH chemiluminescence images were acquired with an ICCD. NOx emission characteristics were also investigated at each experimental condition. The effect of the fuel-air mixing degree on the flame structure was obtained from phase-locked $OH^*$ images. And it was obtained from local heat release characteristics that the information about the region which the combustion instability was amplified or damped. It also could be confirmed that $\sigma$ has greatly influence on NOx emission characteristics at lean regimes. It would be expected that it could provide invaluable data for understanding the mechanism of combustion instability.

  • This study aims to experimentally investigate the combustion characteristics of a lean premixed swirl-stabilized burner with dual-stage fuel injection arrays. The results show that a variation in the fuel distribution to fuel stages 1 (upstream) and 2 (downstream) produces a noticeable change in the NOx and CO emissions. Reducing the confined ratio, defined as the ratio of the nozzle exit diameter to the liner diameter, may reduce NOx and CO emissions owing to reduced combustion loading and longer residence time, respectively. A nozzle exit velocity of 30 m/s shows the optimum characteristics in terms of NOx and CO emissions and flame stability: increasing or decreasing the nozzle exit velocity leads to a degradation in emissions or flame stability, respectively.

  • The main objective of this study was investigation of natural gas flames in a lean premixed swirl-stabilized dump combustor with an attention focused on the effect of the various fuel-air mixing section geometry on the combustion instability characteristics. The multi-channel dynamic pressure transducers were located on the combustor and inlet mixing section region to observe combustion pressure oscillation and difference phase at each dynamic pressure measurement results. Dynamic pressures were also measured to investigate characteristics of combustion at the same time. The combustor and mixing section length was varied in order to have different acoustic resonance characteristics from 800 to 1800 mm in combustor and 470, 550, 870 mm in mixing section. We observed two dominant instability frequencies in this study. Lower frequencies were obtained at lower equivalence ratio region and it was associated with a fundamental longitudinal mode of combustor length. Higher frequencies were observed in higher equivalence ratio conditions. It was related to secondary longitudinal mode of coupled with the combustor and mixing section. In this instability characteristics, pressure oscillation of mixing section part was larger than pressure oscillation of combustor. As a result, combustion instability was strongly affected by acoustic characteristics of combustor and mixing section geometry.
