The concentration breakthrough curves were examined to predict mass transfer coefficients of nitrogen and oxygen in adsorption column for design data of PSA process. Experimental breakthrough curves for bulk gas flow were compared with theoretical simulation results. For quantitative analysis of the adsorption, coupled Langmuir isotherm was considered and LDF model was used to describe the mass transfer effect. In the experimental and theoretical results, it was found that mass transfer coefficient was not affected by flow rate but strongly affected by pressure. As a result of this tendency, mass transfer resistance in this system was proved to belong to the macropore diffusion controlling region and the mass transfer coefficients could be expressed by exponential functions of pressure change. The mass transfer coefficients for one component, nitrogen or oxygen, were successfully applied to breakthrough curves for bulk mixed gases. The experimental curves were reasonably in consistent with the theoretical curves and the error time was less than 5 percent.

Activated carbons have been used as adsorbents in various industrial application, such as solvent recovery, gas separation, deodorization, and catalysts. In this study, the effects of residual water on the activated carbon adsorbent surface on the adsorption capacity of $CCl_4$ were investigated. Adsorption behavior in a fixed bed was studied in terms of feed concentration, flow rate, breakthrough curve and adsorption capacity for $CCl_4$. Desorption characteristics of residual water on activated carbon were also studied. The water contents of the activated carbon were varied in the range of 0-20%(w/w) and all experiments were performed at 298.15 K. The adsorption equilibrium data $CCl_4$ on the activated carbon were well expressed by Langmuir isotherm. The adsorption capacity of $CCl_4$ decreased with increasing residual water content. Desorption of residual water in activated carbon decreased expotentially with $CCl_4$ adsorption. The obtained breakthrough curves using LDF(linear driving force) model represented our experimental data.
Adsorption experiments for $H_2$, $CH_4$, CO, $CO_2$ on activated carbon and zeolite 5A were performed by static volumetric method. A 4-bed pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from multi-component mixture gases ($H_2$ 72.2%, $CH_4$ 4.06%, CO 2.03%, $CO_2$ 21.6%). Dual-site langmuir (DSL) isotherm showed good or fair agreement with the experimental results. The optimum height of activated carbon layer was 55 cm with breakthrough results on the packing ratio of activated carbon to zeolite 5A. In PSA process, the effects of the process parameters such as total cycle time ($T_c$), ${\Delta}P$ at the provide purge step and adsorption pressure on the PSA performance were studied experimentally and theoretically.
A two-column six-step pressure swing adsorption(PSA) process was to study separation of hydrogen from hydrogen and methane($60_{vol}%/40_{vol}%$) binary system onto activated carbon adsorbent. The effects of the feed gas pressure, the feed flowrate and the P/F(purge to feed) ratio on the process performance were evaluated. The cyclic steady-states of PSA process were reached to after 15 cycles. $H_2$ purity increases according as the P/F ratio and pressure increase and the feed flow rate decreases; however, $H_2$ recovery shows an opposite phenomena to the purity. PSA process simulation studied to find optimum operation condition. In the results, 22 LPM feed flowrate, 11 atm adsorption pressure and 0.10 P/F ratio might be optimal values to obtain more than 75% recovery and 99% purity hydrogen. In this study was non-isothermal and non-adiabatic model considering linear driving force(LDF) model and Langmuir-Freundlich adsorption isotherm considered to compare between prediction and experimental data.

VOCs (Volatile organic compounds) are known as one of the harmful chemicals, causing cancer and global warming. Therefore, the proper control, removal, and reduction of the emission of VOCs are important tasks for the environmental protection. Among the method of VOCs removal activated carbon bed is the most efficient and economical method. In this study, the adsorption performance of toluene gas was investigated using various activated carbons. To find out the adsorption efficiency, the H/D (Height/Diameter) of the activated carbon and GHSV (Gas Hourly Space Velocity) of the toluene gas were manipulated with various conditions. The effect of the temperature, humidity and toluene-MEK-IPA mixed gas on adsorption were also investigated. As a result, a high adsorption performance was found when GHSV is lower at room temperature and low humidity. It was also found that the adsorption efficiency of toluene-MEK-IPA mixed gas system was lower than that of toluene gas system.

Desorption reaction characteristics of the used activated carbons collected from painting process in Shiwha/Banwal industrial complex were investigated. Thermogravimetric analyzer was used to investigate the desorption characteristics. Activation energies and reaction orders for desorption reaction characteristics of used activated carbons were estimated by employing Friedman method and Freeman-Carroll method. In the used activated carbons collected from painting process, it was found that the activation energies were 20.6~43.2 kJ/mol in Friedman method and 12.3~26.5 kJ/mol in Freeman-carroll method, and reaction orders were 0.1~1.7.
In this study, the heavy metal ions (of Pb, Cd, Cr, and Hg) in wastewater were removed using a spent Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2-based crystallized glass previously used as an induction top plate material. Changes in the removal efficiency of heavy metals according to different reaction parameters, such as the amount of zeolite used as a heavy-metal adsorbent, adsorption time, initial concentration of the heavy metals, and pH of the initial solution, were investigated. As the amount of zeolite added increased, the heavy-metal removal efficiency also increased. Adsorption time had a considerable influence on adsorption characteristics, and the removal efficiency of all heavy metals increased with increasing adsorption time. In the case of Cd, the removal efficiency was greatly improved depending on the adsorption time. The initial concentration of the heavy-metal solution did not affect the removal efficiency; however, the initial pH of the heavy-metal solution affected the removal efficiency. More specifically, the removal efficiency of Cd increased while that of Pb and Cr decreased with increasing pH. The adsorption characteristics of Hg were not significantly affected by pH.

The test did for the determine the optimized ratio of cation to anion in mixed ion exchange demineralizers. Binary, ternary, quaternary, and quinary cation and anion adsorption was performed to develop a comprehensive experimental data set from small-volume batch tests to obtain the selectivity coefficients of many cations and anions. The quantitative run time might be estimated by such ion exchange models as semi-empirical mass action and surface complexation models. The demineralizer can be used longer by increasing the ratios of cation to anion exchange resins in the bed.
The four-bed PSA process using a layered bed of activated carbon and zeolite 5A was studied to produce a high purity hydrogen product from SMR off-gas. At a desired product purity (99.999%+), the recovery increased with decreasing the linear velocity. However, the difference of the increasing of the recovery became smaller with the decreasing of the linear velocity and then was similar from below the linear velocity 3.9 cm/s. When the adsorbents, the feed gas composition, and the operating conditions are given, the residence time is mainly a function for design of the PSA bed size. The minimum residence time exists to obtain the maximum recovery at desired product purity.
