  • To evaluate the hydraulic and cavitation performance of a fuel pump for a liquid rocket engine, performance tests of the pump, which consist of hydraulic tests and cavitation tests, were conducted in water environment with various condition. In the hydraulic tests, the head, efficiency and volute pressure distribution of the pump are found to follow the conventional similarity rule, whereas the secondary flow pressure shows a small deviation from the similarity rule. As the floating gap is constricted, the efficiency of the pump improves and the secondary flow pressure decreases. However, the inner diameter of bypass line orifice does not show clear relationship with the pump efficiency. In the cavitation tests, measurements of the head and the NPSH indicate that the pump shows better cavitation performance as the rotational speed of the pump increases.

  • The performance analysis test of the scramjet engine intake was conducted under the Mach 5 condition of the scramjet engine test facility, a free-jet ground test facility of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. A pitot/static pressure rake installed at the rear of the isolator was designed and manufactured to measure the total pressure recovery rate and mass capture ratio, which are typical performance factors of the scramjet engine intake. The effect of the rake mounted at the rear of the isolator on the intake, the performance analysis measured by the rake, and the change in wall static pressure distribution according to the angle of attack were performed. Finally, the point at which the intake unstart occurred was confirmed by using the rear back pressure adjusting device, which simulates pressure rise in the combustor, and the results are summarized in this paper.

  • A series of water tests of a Lox pump for liquid rocket engines are performed at a room temperature. According to the hydraulic test results, the head coefficient is slightly decreased when the rotational speed of the pump is increased. However the efficiency is high at the high-speed test. Also, according to the cavitation test results, the cavitation performance of the pump is found to be decreased when the flow ratio is less than 92%. Furthermore, the vibration characteristic is analyzed using measured high frequency data.

  • In order to investigate the operation performance behaviors of the UAV's propulsion system to be operated long time in high altitude, the engine performance tests, which are simulated in the altitude engine test facility should be needed. If the test is performed in a existing altitude engine test facility, additional test apparatuses are required. Among them a proper design of the inlet and exhaust ducts that may directly affect the engine performance is very important. If the design is not adequate, the engine performance loss due to the flow behavior change and the pressure loss may be not similar to the real engine performance. In this work, firstly the engine inlet and exhaust ducts to be mounted to the existing altitude facility are modelled in 3D and its flow behaviors and pressure losses are analyzed using a commercial CFD tool, ANSYS's CFX, and the engine performance with the duct losses is calculated using the performance analysis program developed by C. Kong et al. Finally, the optimized inlet and exhaust ducts' configurations are proposed through the repeated analyses of various duct configurations.

  • Three Lox pumps and one fuel pump are manufactured for turbopump real-propellent tests and water tests of the pumps are performed in order to estimate the performance characteristics of the pumps. According to the test results, the test region(flow ratio, cavitation number) of the pumps at the water tests cover the operating region at the real-propellent tests and also all the pumps satisfy the design requirement. The head of the Lox pumps shows a 2% difference among them due to the internal geometry, but the efficiency and overall cavitation performance are almost same. It is found that the fuel pump has a similar head and efficiency compared with the previous model of the same internal geometry, while it has a little inferior cavitation performance.

  • The Air-breathing engine like Sea-Star I is a second propulsive force generator to fly to the target after the booster generating initial propulsive force is separated. The performance of Sea-Star I engine should be verified because the cruise missile controls direction and altitude during flight, so ground engine test is executed before flight test. This these presents evaluation method of ground engine test to verify performance of Sea-Star I's engine.

  • Performance tests of a liquid-oxygen pump were carried out using liquid nitrogen (LN2) as a working fluid in a cryogenic turbopump test facility in Korea Aerospace Research Institute (KARI). The tests were performed at 30-55% of the design rotational speed, and the results were compared with those from a water test. The experimental results confirmed the similarity of the hydraulic performance, which allows the prediction of the pump performance at a design rotational speed of 20,000 rpm. The overall cavitation performance of the pump in the cryogenic environment was better than that in the water environment for all ranges of flow rates and rotational speeds. Critical cavitation number at the design flow rate was determined as 0.012 from the cryogenic test, and as 0.024 from the water test. The improved cavitation performance is due to the thermodynamic effect in cryogenic fluids.

  • In order to perform the scramejt engine intake ground test using the Scramjet Engine Test Facility(SETF) of the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. we introduced the test availability check procedure that is generally conducted. The design process of the newly manufactured Mach 5 nozzle for the scramjet intake test was summarized, a device for checking the core flow distribution of the nozzle was explained, and the core flow test analysis results were written. Through a series of test results, it was confirmed that the intake was located in the new Mach 5 nozzle core.

  • Performance test was conducted for an oxidizer pump and a fuel pump for a 7 ton class rocket engine, by using water. The pumps were driven by an electric motor. The hydrodynamic performance and the suction performance were measured at flow ratio of the design and off-design conditions. Head-flow curve, efficiency-flow curve, and head-cavitation number curve were obtained. It is confirmed that the pumps can satisfy the design requirements of hydrodynamic performance in terms of the head and the efficiency. The pumps also satisfied the design requirements of suction performance.

  • A scramjet engine intake model was tested with a storage air heater type hypersonic wind tunnel. In test results, there is no large performance change with the variation of the sidewall configurations. In the isolator performance analysis, pressure distribution of oblique shock train and normal shock train was observed. Unstart limit of the model was also confirmed.
