Laboratory tests were performed to desorb organic contaminants spiked onto soil particles by using surfactants. Nonionic and anionic surfactants were tested as potential desorbing solvents for extracting quinoline and 2-napthol adsorbed on soil particles. Ahionisc stirfactant remediated approximately 80% and 90% of quinoline and 2-napthol respectively and appeared to be more effective than nonionic surfactant in remediating those compounds, Comparison between simple deionized water washing of the organic contaminated soil and a given surfactant technique evaluated the improvement by the application of a Burfactant to the promotion of desorption.

Soil vapor extraction (SVE) is an effective and cost efficient method of removing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and petroleum hydrocarbons from unsaturated soils. However, soil vapor extraction becomes ineffective in soils with low gas permeability, for example soils with air permeabilities less than 1 Darcy. Incorporating PVDs in an SVE system can extend the effectiveness of SVE to lower permeability soils by shortening the air flow-paths and ultimately expediting contaminant removal. The objective of the research described herein was to effectively incorporate PVDs into a SVE remediation system. The test results show that the gas permeability was evaluated for four different equivalent diameters, increasing the equivalent diameter results in a decrease in the calculated gas permeability. It was found that the porosity for the dry condition was greater than that of the wet condition and will allow flow rate for the same vacuum flow, offering a low resistance to the air flow.
In this study, applicability of electrical conductivity monitoring technique for containment barrier such as soil-bentonite wall was evaluated. Laboratory tests including permeability tests and column tests were performed to understand variations in electrical conductivity at different bentonite contents, hydraulic conductivities, and heavy metal concentrations. The electrical conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite mixtures was found to increase proportionally with bentonite content. Accordingly, the hydraulic conductivity of compacted soil-bentonite mixtures which decreases linearly with increasing bentonite content was found to have an inversely proportional relationship with the electrical conductivity. In column tests, electrical conductivity breakthrough curves and concentration breakthrough curves were simultaneously obtained. These results indicated that electrical conductivity measurement can be an effective means of detecting heavy metal transport at the desired locations within barriers and verifying possible contaminant leakage. Experimental results obtained from this study showed that the electrical conductivity measurement can be a promising tool for monitoring of containment barrier.

Subsurface contamination of industrial hazardous organic substances is a serious social issue. Decomposing the hydrophobic organic compounds in the subsurface is technically difficult and the compounds can last as long-term contaminant sources of groundwater once they are sorbed on the soil. Although the danger of contaminated subsurface has long been recognized little was known about the effective remediation technique. Focusing on the remediation of the p-Cresol and 3, 5-Dichlorobiphenyl among subsurface contaminants, this paper studies the surfactant-enhanced desorption technique. Nonionic surfactant(Triton X-100) and anionic surfactant(SDS ) were used as desorbing solvents for extracting organic compound sorbed on soil particles. Sorption characteristics of soils and organic compounds were analyzed and the applications of surfactant solution were studied through batch tests and the flexible-wall permeameter tests. As a result of the sorption isotherm tests, a log-log linear relation was obtained between the linear-partition coefficient, $K_p$ and the octanol-water partition coefficient, $K_{ow}$ of each organic compound. The result of the batch test also showed that Triton X-100 at 0.5% of solution desorbs the 3, 5-Dichlorobiphenyl 28 times more than the water in the batch tests. The surfactant-enhanced subsurface remediation technique becomes more effective when the contaminants are hydrophobic and hard to be decomposed.

Remediation technology becomes an issue in environmental engineering. The vibro-recovery technique is one of popular means to remove pollutants from contaminated soils and groundwater. Using Ultrasonic excitation in soil-fluid medium, it was found that removal efficiency in a mechanical effects was significant. In this paper, therefore, laboratory experiments were conducted on clayey sand soil columns using a probe-type ultrasonic processor. Ultrasonic treatment with simultaneous pumping enhances dislodgement of clay particles, and ultrasonic excitation reduced the proportions of finer particles and thus result in increased hydraulic conductivity significantly. Also, the results provided the changes in grain size distribution curve of the soil due to ultrasonic excitation. The results indicated that the maximum size of particles mobilized by Ultrasonic is about 0.004mm and particles in the size range from 0.04mm to 1.0mm were subjected to fracturing. The economic feasibility of Ultrasonic implementation is considered in power requirement of the generator and maintenance of the horn. At a specified amplitude of vibrations, the power requirement of the generator depends on overburden pressure of the horn, temperature and viscosity of fluid in the soil medium. For comparisons, the requirement of a one inch and two inch diameter horn sonicators are compared with the power required for pumping water from different depths.
