  • The use of berms can be an effective method to restrain excessive movements of wall and ground caused by deep excavations in urban area. But generally in construction sites, no berm remains for the sake of construction convenience or the geometry and magnitude of remaining berm is determined by individual experiences due to scarce research results. In this research, laboratory model tests and numerical analyses are used mainly for sandy soils. And efficient berms for restraining excessive movements by deep excavations are analyzed. Model tests were performed for the cases of cantilever and braced wall excavations, and the behaviors of retaining wall were analyzed according to the geometry and magnitude of berms. And also, numerical methods were used for analyzing efficient berms which are available in the soil and construction conditions in urban areas of Korea.

  • In this study, the design and numerical analysis method of the inclined self-supported wall using cement treated soil were studied. In the case of the inclined self-supported wall, the active earth pressure decreased due to the decrease in the coefficient, Ka according to the slope (angle) and the weight decreasing effect, thereby increasing the overall stability. The wall with the slope caused a change in failure mode from overturning to sliding on the excavation side, and the optimal slope was evaluated to be about 10°. Compared to the strength reduction method, the overall stability in numerical analysis results in conservative results in limit equilibrium analysis, so it was found that this method should be attended when designing. As a result of the parameteric study, the stability on bearing capacity and compression failure did not significantly increase above the slope of 10° when the surcharge was small (about 20kPa or less). In the case of cohesion of the backfill, The results similar to numerical analysis were found to consider cohesion. It was evaluated that stability on sliding, oveturning, shear, and tension failure increases in proportion to the thickness of the wall, but there is no significant change in the stability on the bearing capacity and compressive failure regardless of the thickness of the wall above a certain angle (about 10°).

  • Recently, when being constructed the large structures, the deep excavations have performed to utilize the underground space. As the ground excavation is deeper, the damage of the adjacent structure and the ground is frequently occurred. the Analysis of the retaining structures is necessary to safety of the excavation works. There are many methods such as elasto-plastic theory, FEM, and FDM to analyze the displacement of the retaining structure. In this thesis, GEBA-1 program by the Nakamura-Nakajawa elasto-plastic method was developed. The lateral displacement of the wall was analyzed by the developed program GEBA-1, SUNEX, and EXCAD, and compared with the measured displacement bye the Inclinometer. The monitored fields were three excavation work site in S-I, S-II, and S-III area. Excavation method of each site is braced retaining wall using H-pile. Excavation depth is 14m, 14m, and 8.2m.

  • In this study, centrifugal model tests were performed to investigate the behavior of excavated earth retaining wall with the depth of excavation and different types of wall(aluminum, steel panel). Jumunjin standard sand was used for foundation soil. The raining method was adopted to form the required relative density of the model ground. The lateral earth pressure measured from tests were compared with estimated active earth pressure by Rankine's theory. The test results have shown that the earth pressure acting on the retaining wall and the rotation displacement of the wall are influenced by the depth of excavation and the type of wall. It was found from the test results that the deformation of the wall increases with the depth of excavation.

  • Two-row Overlap Pile wall is a novel retaining wall system with high flexural rigidity and waterproofing for deep excavation support currently being developed in Korea. The Two-row Overlap Pile wall is constructed by making an overlap between consecutive four-axis (or two-axis) auger piles which themselves are overlapped and arranged in zigzag manner. In this study, the flexural rigidity of the Two-row Overlap Pile wall, including the effect of cross-sectional shape, was examined using both theoretical and numerical approaches. The results of investigation suggested that the Two-row Overlap Pile wall formed with two-row piles exhibit greatly higher flexural rigidity than conventional one-row pile walls such as Cast in place pile (CIP) and Secant pile wall (SPW), whereas the effect of overlap length between piles on the flexural rigidity is relatively minimal.

  • Recently the deep and large excavations are performed near the existing buildings in urban areas for the practical use of underground space. The earth pressure due to the excavation are varied according to the conditions of ground, the depth of excavation, the construction methods, and the method of supporting the earth pressure etc.. In this study, not only the behavior of axial load and distribution of earth pressure on the flexible wall according to stage excavation depth but also magnitude and distribution of lateral deformation, and the equivalent earth pressure from strut axial loads were analyzed by the results measured from instruments such as, load cells, strain gauges, and in-situ inclinometer, on the field of subway construction. According to the results of this study in the case of stage excavation the earth pressure of soft clayey soil is compounded with Terzaghi-Peck and Tschebotarioff.

  • Two-row overlap pile wall, currently under development for use in deep excavations, is a novel retaining structure designed to perform itself as a cutoff wall as well as a high-stiffness wall by constructing four overlapping piles arranged in zigzag manner at a time using a tetra-axis auger. This wall has a relatively complex cross-section, compared with other types of pile wall, which would make it difficult to determine design parameters related to cross-section. In this study, a flexural rigidity equation has been derived by analyzing both theoretically and statistically various wall cross-sections with different pile diameters and overlap lengths. The flexural rigidity equation was found to show the maximum error rate of 3%.

  • Construction methods for underground structure are classified as bottom-up, up-up, and top-down methods depending on the procedure of construction related to a superstructure. In top-down construction methods, building's main structure is built from the ground level downwards by sequentially alternating ground excavation and structure construction. In the mean time, the main structure is also used as supporting structure for earth-retaining wall, which results in the increased stability of the earth-retaining wall due to the minimized deformation in adjacent structures and surrounding grounds. In addition, the method makes it easy to secure a field for construction work in the downtown area by using each floor slabs as working spaces. However top-down construction method is often avoided since an excavation under the slab has low efficiency and difficult environment for work, and high cost compared with earth anchor method. This paper proposes a combined construction method where semi-open cut is selected as excavation work, slurry as earth -retaining wall and CWS as top-down construction method. In the case study targeted for an actual construction project, the proposed method is compared with existing top-down construction method in terms of economic feasibility, construction period and work efficiency. The proposed construction method results in increased work efficiency in the transportation of earth and sand, and steel frame erection, better quality management in PHD construction, and reduced construction period.

  • When doing underground excavation works for the purpose of constructing large underground structures for a building in the limited space in downtown area, the stability of the adjacent ground must be top priority, and to accomplish this, it is essential to review the retaining wall construction carefully. H-Pile, which has been mainly used as a stress-carrying material in temporary earth-retaining structures, is most likely to be abandoned after completion of the works for the basement exterior wall in relation to contiguous bored piles, so it will result in a waste of material. To improve this situation, Basement Composite Wall where H-Pile and basement wall are compounded, has been developed. This wall is being used most frequently in many local construction sites. In this study, five specimens are made in order to evaluate the shear resistance of the basement composite wall and tested. Test parameter is the composition ratio and wall thickness according to shear connectors. Test result shows that the shear strength is improved when the composite ratio is increased but the magnitude is not much. A formula, which considers the contribution of concrete, web of H-pile as well as flange' effect in calculation of shear strength of composite basement wall, is suggested and used to calculation of the strength of specimens. It is found that there is a good co-relation between test result and the calculated one by the formula.
