  • This paper summarizes the development and evaluation of the reinforcement details of CFRP plates to improve the bending performance of wooden beams. In this study, the reinforcing technology using high-strength bolts for the end of beam were developed as reinforcement details for reinforcing wooden beams with CFRP plates by EBM method. In order to evaluate the bending performance, a bending test was conducted for the specimens with details of reinforcement such as the EBM method and the NSM method. From the experimental results, the EBM specimens without end restraints had both the CFRP plate attachment failure and the splitting failure of the wood. In the load-displacement curve, the non-reinforced specimens exhibited linear elastic behavior and then brittle fracture after the maximum load. The maximum load of the specimens reinforced by the EBM method increased by 31.5~63.0% compared to the non-reinforced specimens, and the maximum load according to the end restraints of the high-strength bolts increased by 24.0%. Based on the reinforcement amount of the same CFRP plate, EBM reinforcement was 2.67 times larger in maximum load increase rate than NSM reinforcement.

  • Polymer concrete is expected to be widely used as a building material because it has a shorter hardening time and excellent compression, tensile, bending, bond strength, frictional resistance and abrasion loss compared to general concrete. The polymer concrete has excellent vibration damping performance and research on the use of various reinforcing materials is being conducted. However, in order to completely replace the general concrete and the general anti-vibration reinforcement, such polymer concrete requires an overall review of vibration reduction performance considering physical properties, dynamic properties, productivity and field applicability. In this study, the physical and dynamic properties of polymer concrete by epoxy mixing ratio were compared with those of general concrete. It was appeared that compression, tensile, bending and bond strengths of polymer concrete by epoxy mixing were significantly higher than those of general concrete. Especially, the tensile strength was more than 4 ~ 6.5 times. Based on the basic physical properties of polymer concrete, the damping ratio, which is a dynamic characteristic according to the epoxy mixing ratio, was derived through analytical models and experiments. As a result, the dynamic stiffness of polymer concrete was 20% higher than that of general concrete and the loss rate was about 3 times higher.

  • Ten high-strength concrete beam specimens, which have various combinations of different types of flexural reinforcement and short fibers were constructed and tested. Six beams were reinforced with two layers of steel, CFRP, and GFRP bar combinations. The other four beams were reinforced with two layers of single type CFRP and GFRP bars, with steel and synthetic short fibers. An investigation was performed on the influence of the parameters on the load-carrying capacity, post cracking stiffness, cracking pattern, deflection behavior, and ductility. The low post cracking stiffness, large deflection, deep crack propagation, large crack width, and low ductility of FRP bar-reinforced beams were controlled and improved by positioning steel bars in the inner layer of the FRP bar layer. In addition, the addition of fibers increased the first-cracking load, ultimate flexural strength, and ductility as well as the deep propagating cracks were controlled in the FRP bar-reinforced concrete beams. The increased ultimate concrete strain of fiber-reinforced concrete should be determined and considered when FRP bar-reinforced concrete members with fibers are designed.

  • VES-LMC (very-early strength latex-modified concrete) has been widely used as repair material for bridge deck overlay or rehabilitation, because the overlaid or repaired could be opened to the traffic after 3 hours of curing. Although the field performance of VES-LMC generally indicates that it has an excellent bonding to the substrate and shows a long term performance, little quantitative data or research results have been presented in the literature on structural studies. The purpose of this study was to investigate the flexural behavior, interfacial performance, crack propagation, and strengthen effect of RC beam overlaid or repaired by VES-LMC through the 4-point flexural loading test. Two different types of RC beam were fabricated for repair and rehabilitation types. The test result showed that the strengthen effect, in term of flexural stiffness, increases as the depth of repair or overlay increases. More than 40% of stiffness was improved when the depth of repair was up to steel position. However, there was a little difference between 80 mm and 120 mm repaired beam. This means the repair depth must be considered. The interfacial behavior data showed that the repaired or overlaid beams had a little relative displacement. This means that two materials behave comparatively acting together. However, there were two specimens which had large displacement at the interface, because of poor bond strength. This suggested that interface treatment is one of the most important jobs in composite beams.

  • This paper focuses on the experimental study for investigating the performance for lap splice of hooked or headed reinforcement in beam with different depths. In the experiment, seven specimens, with its variables as the lap length of headed or hooked bar, the existence of stirrups, etc., was manufactured. Bending test was conducted. Lap strengths by test were compared with the theoretical model based on KCI2012. The result showed that the cracks at failure mode occurred along the axial direction to a headed bar. The initial stiffness and the stiffness after initial crack were similar for all specimens. For HS series specimens without stirrups, a 25% increase in lap length was increased 11.8~18.1% maximum strengths. For HH series specimens without stirrups, a increase in lap length did not affect the maximum strengths because of the pryout failure of headed bar. For HS series specimens, the theoretical lap strengths based on KCI2012 considering the B grade lap and the reduction factor for stirrup were evaluated. They are smaller than the test strengths and can ensure the safety in terms of strength capacity. For HH series specimens, the stirrups in the lap zone are needed to prevent the pryout behaviour of headed bar.

  • Most of studies on existing strengthening methods were mainly on increase of stiffness and strength of shear strengthening to rectangular beam. As concrete of beam and slab is poured simultaneously on the characteristics of construction in reinforced concrete beam-slab structure, adjacent slab uniformed after hardening has T-shaped beam cross section which makes the flange of beam, enhances the stiffness of the beam and widens the area supporting compressive strength, but available data of flexural behavior of T-shaped beam are lacking. In this research the T-shaped beams would be made, then the reinforced effects and structural properties can be estimated according to the kinds of reinforced materials and reinforced position. The conclusions are shown as below. To sum up the experimental results, The specimen which was reinforce by CB embedded inside of concrete indicated excellent resistive behavior, internal force and stiffness when it was destroyed. The steel plate reinforced specimen of stiffness and internal force were increase but it expressed lower reinforce effects because of lowering anchored force between concrete. Fiber sheet strengthening showed superior effects but the interfacial delamination was found due to the lack of anchored force in destruction. So the measure is needed now.

  • An approximate method of normal coordinate idealization for use in nonlinear R /C frames has been developed. Normal coordinate apporaches have been used for nonlinear problems in the past, but they are not recerved wide acceptance because of the need for eigenvector computation in each time step. The proposed method circumvents the eigenvector recalculation problem by evaluating a limited number of sets of mode shapes in performing the dynamic analysis. Then some of the predetermined sets of eigenvectors are used in the nonlinear dynamic repeatedly. The method is applied to frame structures with ductile R /C elements. The plastic hinge zones are modeled with hysteres~s loops which evince degrading stiffness and pinching effects. Effxiencies and accuracies of the method for this application are presented.

  • A series of connection tests of portal frames which were composed of cold-formed steel studs and rafters was carried out to study the moment-rotation relation, the rotational rigidity, and the yield and the ultimate moment of the connections. The main factors of the tests were the thickness, the shape of the connecting members which were made of mild steel, and the torsional restraints of the test specimens. The test results were compared with those obtained through the non-linear analysis, for verification. The secant stiffness estimated from the experimental moment-rotation curve was proposed for the rotational rigidity of semi-rigid connections, and its validity was verified in the structural frame analysis.

  • The longitudinal reinforcement ratio for the performance-based design of columns was studied. Unlike the existing design codes using uniform minimum reinforcement ratio and effective stiffness for all columns, the longitudinal reinforcement ratio of columns was defined as the function of various design parameters. To evaluate the minimum reinforcement ratio, two conditions were considered: 1) prevention of passive yielding of compression re-bars due to the creep and shrinkage of concrete under sustained service loads; and 2) ultimate flexural strength greater than the cracking moment capacity to maintain the ductility of columns for earthquake design. In addition, the effective flexural stiffness of columns for structural analysis was determined according to the longitudinal reinforcement ratio. The design method addressing the three criteria was proposed. The proposed method was applied to a design example.

  • Modeling techniques of piled pier were reviewed and the influences of pile cap's boundary conditions were analyzed in this study. The method using flexible springs seems to be useful fur the practical design since its simplified model can represent the complex behaviors of pile groups efficiently. Parameter studies were performed far various pile group arrangements, pile spacings, end bearing conditions, and loading stages to analyze their effects on the lateral displacements, maximum pile bending stresses, and lateral stiffness of pile groups. Through the parameter studies, it was found that when lateral stiffness of pile groups was estimated by using three-dimensional analysis method (YSGroup), its complex behavior could be predicted better than other methods based on single pile analysis.
