  • A prototype of Flywheel Energy Storage System with high Tc superconducting bearings was fabricated and tested to verify its applicability for the energy industry. The moment of inertia of assembled wheel with rotor magnets is about 1.072${\times}$10$^{-1}$ Kg-m$^2$. The wheel was designed to withstand its integrity up to the rotation speed of 20,000 rpm. YBCO bulk superconductors prepared by seed growth method were used as bearing to levitate and stabilize the rotating wheel. High speed rotation of the flywheel without mechanical contact was achieved by using specially designed Halbach type motor. The flywheel system showed very high stability during test operation performed up to the speed of about 10,000rpm. The energy loss measured by free decay test performed between 9,300 rpm and 7,000 rpm was calculated as about 45 W.

  • This paper presents an high efficiency energy conversion system for very high-speed flywheel energy storage system using high Tc superconducting bearings. Main configuration of power convertor is designed to replace of the conventional battery with EMB(Electro Mechanical Battery). PMSM(Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor) using Halbach array is used as the energy conversion system of motor and generator. Some PWM methods for the high frequency inverter is described and the power factor effects to the torque characteristics and efficiency of the motor and generator is analyzed. As the results, it is verified that the inverter output current is well regulated to be in-phase or inverse-phase sinusoidal waveform to have the wide operational range from 2,500rpm to 42,000rpm. Proposed circuit is designed to obtain the very high speed, high efficiency and stable rotational characteristics, and to be applied to1.2r[kW]/65[Wh] system.

  • Due to the shape of spindle with small diameter and heavy section, rapid cooling is difficult. It is difficult to fabricate the tapered wheel bearings with fine microstructure. Thus, their mechanical characteristics, such as yield strength and fatigue resistance, decrease. Producing the tapered wheel bearings with good workability during orbital forming after hot forging, hot forging process with several process parameters was optimized by means of statistical technique of Six-Sigma scheme. As a result, the lower heating temperature is, the lower the hardness and yield strength of forgings are. Also, the faster conveyer velocity is, the lower the hardness and yield strength of forgings are. To avoid therefore occurrence of the surface rupture during orbital forming, the heating temperature should be controlled as low as possible and the conveyer velocity should be controlled as fast as possible.

  • A 300Wh class flywheel energy storage system using high Tc superconductor bearings(HTC SFES) is being developed by KIMM and KEPRI. HTC SFES consists of a flywheel rotor, superconductor bearings, a motor/generator and its controller, touch-down bearings, vacuum chamber, etc. Stiffness and damping values of superconductor bearings were experimentally estimated to be 67,700N/m and 29Ns/m respectively. The present HTC SFES was designed to have maximum operating speed of 33000 rpm, which is far above 2 rigid body mode critical speeds of 645rpm and 1,275rpm. Leaf-spring type touch-down bearing were utilized to have the system pass safely through the system critical speeds. It has been experimentally verified that the system can run stably up to 28,000 rpm so that HTC SFES is now expected to reach up to its maximum design speed of 33,000rpm without any difficulties. The Halbach array motor & generator has also been proven its effectiveness on transferring electrical energy to a rotaing composite flywheel in kinetic form.

  • 본 논문에서는 현재 전력저장시스템으로써 가장 많이 사용하고 있는 배터리를 대체할 목적의 5MB (Superconductive Magnetic Bearing)를 이용한 off-line UPS에 관해 연구하였다 영구자석의 덩어리형 고온 초전도 체위에서의 부상득성을 이용하여 베어링 문제의 해결방안에 접근함으로써 고효율의 FES찰 구성하여 단상 off-line UPS에 적용하였으며 제어회로에는 80C 1 96KC 마이크로프로세서를 사용하였고 빠픈 응답윤 요구하는 부분 은 아날로그회로를 사용하여 구성하였다. 에너지 저장모드에서 컨버터 입력천류는 전원전압과 동상의 정현파로 제어하였으며 에너지 회생모드에서는 출력잔압윤 정현파로 제어하기위해 필터커패시터전류릎 직접 제어하였다. 시작 품제작을 통해 시스템의 안장된 동작특성을 확인함으로써 제안된 FES가 Off-line UPS 에서의 에너지 저장매체로써 우수함을 입증하였다.

모멘텀 휠용 라비린스실 개발 (Development of a Labyrinth Seal for a Momentum Wheel)

  • Labyrinth seal is most common way to protect the bearings installed in Reaction wheel. In spite of wide applications, no such research was found about the sealing utility of the Labyrinth seal in the condition of vacuum and high temperature. In this research, we tried to verify the utility of Labyrinth seal. Numerical analysis had been executed to predict the benefit of the Labyrinth seal and also experiments were performed to verify the utilization. Two Bearings were installed at the vacuum chamber, one was assembled with Labyrinth seal and the other was stand alone. After executing the vacuum test, it was found to be the stand alone bearing had lost more weight than the one that was assembled with the labyrinth seal. In this result, it is verified that the Labyrinth seal has useful function to preserve the lubricant that affects to the life-cycle of the Bearing.

열간단조 후 고주파 유도경화에 의해 제조된 휠 베어링 유니트용 0.52%C강의 특성과 변태거동 (Characterization and Transformation of 0.52%C steels for Wheel Bearing Units Produced by High Frequency Induction Hardening after Hot Forging)

  • We fabricated flanged outer races for wheel bearing units using 0.52%C clean steels, and then characterized and studied the transformation behavior. The outer races produced by hot forging and high frequency induction hardening in this study were analyzed through microstructural characterization using OM, SEM, TEM, and X-ray diffractometer and their microhardness depth profiles of the raceway contacted by balls were measured using MVH tester. The surface hardened layers with a uniform hardness profile in the raceway consisting of very fine martensite with sub-micron sized retained austenite could be formed for very short time during high frequency induction hardening after hot forging. The very fine martensite may be transformed on rapid cooling, from the inhomogeneous austenite nucleated on rapid heating in small particles of pearlitic cementite fragmentated by hot forging. On the other hand the sub-micron sized retained austenite may be chemically stabilized due to their extremely small size, from the small austenite nucleated at the grain boundaries.

  • A superconductor flywheel energy storage(SFES) system is mainly act an electro-mechanical battery which transfers mechanical energy into electrical form and vice versa. SFES system consists of a pair of non-contacting High Temperature Superconductor (HTS) bearings with a very low frictional loss. But it is essential to design an efficient HTS bearing considering with rotor dynamic properties through correct calculation of stiffness in order to support a huge composite flywheel rotor with high energy storage density. Static properties of HTS bearings provide data to solve problems which may occur easily in a running system. Since stiffness to counter vibration is the main parameter in designing an HTS bearing system, we investigate HTS bearing magnetic force through static properties between the Permanent Magnet(PM) and HTS. We measured axial / radial stiffness and found bearing stiffness can be easily changed by activated vibration direction between PM and HTS bulk. These results are used to determine the optimal design for a 10 kWh SFES.

철도차량 추진제어장치 성능시험을 위한 관성부하 시험설비의 구조안전성 및 동특성 평가 연구 (A Study on Structural Integrity and Dynamic Characteristic of Inertial Load Test Equipment for Performance Test of Railway Vehicle Propulsion Control System)

  • 본 논문은 철도차량용 추진제어장치의 성능평가를 위한 관성부하 시험설비의 구조안전성 및 동특성 평가를 연구하였다. 추진제어장치는 철도차량의 핵심 부품으로서 차량에 적용하기 전에 안정성 및 신뢰성 검증이 충분히 이루어 져야 한다. 따라서 추진제어장치의 성능시험을 위한 관성부하 시험설비를 이론식을 바탕으로 하여 설계하였다. 설계된 관성부하 시험설비에 대해 Ansys v11.0을 이용하여 구조해석을 수행하였으며, ADAMS를 통해 동특성을 평가하였다. 관성부하 시험설비의 구조안전성은 조합하중하의 베어링에서 안전계수가 10.2로 만족하였다. 또한, 동적 시뮬레이션에 따른 플라이휠은 0.83mm이내의 최대진폭변위로 구조적 안정성이 확보되었다.
