  • The physicochemical properties of dried oak mushrooms were investigated to determine the comparative effects of ethylene oxide (E.O) fumigation and gamma irradiation with doses at 1 and 5 kGy. The total amino acid content was relatively stable in irradiated groups in comparison with the control. Treatments with gamma irradiation did not effect the content of reducing sugar but caused en increase in free sugars, such as mannitol, arabitol and trehalose. There were no significant differences in concentrations of minerals. The amount of water and fat soluble pigments and the rancidity of the samples stored at $25^{\circ}C$ increased with increasing the storage time and the relative humidity, and the tendency to change was more apparent in E.O. fumigated sample than gamma irradiated one.

  • In 1998, a pathogen isolated from infected onions was identified as Aspergillus niger. At 3$0^{\circ}C$, A. niger AnYD-1 showed the best mycelial growth, spore germination, and high pathogenicity to onions. In spite of the weak inhibitory effect of flusilazole and hexaconazole on the mycelial growth on PDA, they showed the specific inhibitory activity against the formation of spores in the vapour phase. With flusilazole and hexaconazole, the effects of the solvent, the applied concentration and the incubating temperature on the activities inhibiting the spore formation were confirmed. Their inhibitory effect on the spore formation in vapour phase was excellent by solving them with dimethylsulfoxide and dimethylformamide among tested solvents, and applying them at high temperature such as 30~35$^{\circ}C$.

  • Ethylene oxide (E.O) fumigation and gamma irradiation were applied to comparative researches on the sterilizing effect and physicochemical quality of sound red and black peppers. The microorganisms contaminated in the sample, including total bacteria, aerobic spores, acid tolerant bacteria, fungi, osmophilic molds and coliforms were sterilized with irradiation doses of 7 10 kGy, while E.O fumigation in a commonly used condition proved insufficient for the destruction of them. Both treatments affected more or less chemical components of the sample, such as pungent principle, pigment, essential oils and volatile flavors, but the gamma irradiation at the doses for radurization and radicidation was shown to be safer than E.O fumigation.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the fumigant toxicity, the contact toxicity and the ovipositional repellency of 25 monoterpenoids against oak longicorn beetle adults, Moechotypa diphysis. Monoterpenoids with 100% of fumigant toxicity were 1, 8-cinehone, fenchone, pulegone and (equation omitted)-terpinene at 20 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration, pulegone and (equation omitted)-terpinen at 10 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration, pulegone at 5 (equation omitted)/954 ml (air) concentration. Most monoterpenoids showed low or no contact toxicity but only pulegone showed about 70% mortality. Some monoterpenoids which had repellency to female adults with Y-tube olfactometer were bornylacetate, carvacrol, 1, 8-cineole and menthol at 1 (equation omitted) dose, while citronellol showed attractant response. Carveol, geraniol and perillyl alcohol of 25 monoterpenoids showed ovipoistional repellency of 82.1%, 78.3%, 87.5%, respectively, at the concentration of 1,000 ppm in the laboratory condition. In the field, the result tested with three monoterpenoids indicated that geraniol was the most effective one at the concentration of 10,000ppm and 1,000 ppm, but residual effect wasn't found.

  • Pine wilt disease caused by pine wood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner et Buhrer) Nickle, has become the most serious threat to pine trees in Korea since 1988. Pine wood nematode is transferred to healthy trees by Monochamus alternatus (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) during its maturation feeding and female oviposition. A typical control method against insect vectors in Korea is fumigation of the dead trees by using metam-sodium SL (25%). However, this method is not environment friendly because of the forest contamination by chemical application and destroying landscape by plastic cover. Portable Bark Remover (PBR) was invented to reduce these environmental problems. The vectors oviposit under the bark of the newly dead trees only. Debarking infested trees prevents the vectors from laying eggs and eventually, they can not complete their life cycle. The PBR is a modified debarking device that is attached on the top of the electrical chain saw, which allows ease and rapid debarking of the infested trees. The new method by PBR is expected to be more economic and effective than other conventional methods such as "crushing", "burning" and "fumigation".

  • Fumigant toxicity of 18 plant essential oils were tested against the adults of oak longicorn beetle, Moechotypa diphysis. Among them, eucalyptus, rosemary and pennyroyal oils showed 100% mortality and sage oil showed 85% mortality at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. Eucalyptus and rosemary oils showed 100% mortality within 6 hr after treatment at 10 $\mu\ell/\ell$ (air) dose. GC and GC/MS analysis of the four essential oils and bioassay of their components revealed that 1,8-cineole (a major component of eucalyptus, rosemary and sage oils), thujone (a major component of sage oil) and pulegone (a major component of pennyroyal oil) showed higher adulticidal activity than others.

  • Many forest pests have caused problems for wood quarantine. The fumigation activity of phosphine ($PH_3$) was examined for the adults of three wood-boring insect pests. The $LCT_{99}$ values for Platypus koryoensis, Cryphalus fulvus, and Xyleborus mutilates were 3.192, 0.994, and $0.501mg{\cdot}h/L$ at $20^{\circ}C$, respectively. The effectiveness of $PH_3$ was increasingly time dependent for all doses tested in all three species. In particular, P. koryoensis showed 100% mortality at doses higher than 0.4 mg/L 7 days after fumigation. These results indicate that methyl bromide could be substituted for $PH_3$ for adults of these three species of wood pest.

  • We tested the pre-treatment of alumina, leucine, alumina mixed with leucine at ratios of 9:1 (Al-Leu (9:1)) and 5:1 (Al-Leu (5:1)), and alumina mixed with sodium lactate at a ratio of 5:1 (Al-Lac (5:1)) on aged fingerprints (1, 7, 14, and 30 days after natural fingerprinting) before cyanoacrylate (CA) fuming to improve the development efficacy. As a result of the experiment, fingerprints with pre-treatment of alumina, leucine, Al-Leu (9:1), Al-Leu (5:1), and Al-Lac (5:1) showed better development efficacy (area and minutiae) than fingerprints without pre-treatment. Therefore, this modified CA fuming method improved the development efficacy with five pretreatments.
