Cross-Cultural Comparison of Materialism and Hedonic & Utilitarian Shopping Value : Using Korean, American, and Japanese College Students (대학생 소비자의 물질주의와 쾌락적.효용적 쇼핑가치 비교연구 : 한국, 미국, 일본 대학생을 대상으로)

  • The objectives of this study are to compare the levels of materialism with hedonic-utilitarian shopping values among 645 college students in Ulsan and Seoul, Korea; Columbus, Ohio, USA; and Nagasaki, Japan, and to analyze the impact of materialism on hedonic-utilitarian shopping values. As for the levels of hedonic shopping values, the students in Japan and Ulsan had the highest of all, whereas for the levels of utilitarian shopping values, those in Ulsan had the highest. For the levels of materialism, the students in Ulsan had the highest of all and those in Seoul had the lowest. And three scales in the materialism had a different influence on hedonic-utilitarian shopping values.

Effect of Socio-Economic Variables and Materialism on Hedonic and Utilitarian Shopping Value: Middle, High and College Students in Seoul and Ulsan (사회인구학적 변수와 물질주의가 쾌락적.효용적 쇼핑가치에 미치는 영향: 서울과 울산의 중.고등.대학생을 대상으로)

  • Consumer researchers' growing interest in consumer experience has revealed that many consumption activities produce both hedonic and utilitarian outcomes. The personal shopping value also has both hedonic and utilitarian dimension. This article describes the effect of socio-economic variables and materialism on hedonic and utilitarian shopping value. 820 middle, high and college students in Seoul and Ulsan were surveyed. A moderate degree of positive intercorrelation between hedonic and utilitarian shopping value support the trend of consumption ambivalence. Materialism is positively related to hedonic and utilitarian shopping value. While age is negatively related to utilitarian shopping value, it is unrelated to hedonic shopping value. The mean scores of hedonic and utilitarian shopping value in Ulsan is higher than in Seoul.

인터넷 구매 경험이 구매자 쇼핑가치 변환에 미치는 영향 분석

  • 본 연구는 인터넷 쇼핑 시 구매의도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 쇼핑가치와 신뢰의 관점에서 접근하였으며, 인터넷 구매 경험이 적은 그룹과 구매 경험이 많은 그룹을 구분하여 그 변화를 실증 분석하였다. 전체 204명의 표본을 구매경험이 적은 그룹(107명)과 구매 경험이 많은 그룹(96명)으로 나누어 PLS(Partial Least Square)를 통하여 분석한 결과 구매경험이 적은 그룹은 신뢰와 태도가 매개가 된 쾌락적 쇼핑가치가 큰 영향을 미치는 반면에 구매경험이 많은 그룹은 효용적 쇼핑 가치가 구매의도에 가장 큰 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다.

  • The main goal of this study is to investigate the importance of trust as a mediator between shopping experience and shopping value. Previous studies on utilitarian shopping value and hedonic shopping value have focused on the antecedents and outcomes of those shopping values. Also, although the role of trust has been studied a lot in the series of studies on online shopping mall, most of them focus on the relationship with intention to shop or use and there are few studies on the mechanism in which consumers get to have shopping value. This study tries to see how trust can boost utilitarian shopping value and hedonic shopping value which can lead to consumer's loyalty to the shopping mall. A structural equation model is proposed and examined through a survey research to investigate the role of trust in forming perceived shopping value. One model included the trust variable as a mediator and the other excluded it. The comparison of R2 verified that the first model had a better fit. The results of the study show that the level of experience has a significant impact on both utilitarian and hedonic shopping values in the case of the model without the mediator. But experience has an insignificant or a partially significant effect on utilitarian and hedonic shopping values when trust mediates experience and shopping values. Finally, the implications and limitations are further discussed.

A Study on the Level of Perception to Internet Shopping′ Benefit - Risk in Relation to the Internet Searching Value Types of College Student Consumers (대학생소비자의 인터넷탐색가치유형과 인터넷쇼핑에 대한 혜택-위험 지각정도에 관한 연구)

  • This study explored the Internet searching values(utilitarian searching value and hedonic searching value) of college student consumers, typed the Internet searching values to four types, and analysed the level of perception to Internet shopping' benefit-risk according to the Internet searching value types. The subjects were 361 college students. We used Cronbach'$\alpha$, multiple regression, one-way ANOVA, and Scheffe' test as statistical analysis. The results were summarized as follows : 1) According to the Internet searching values, college student consumers were classified into 4 types - high utilitarian/high hedonic type, high utilitarian/low hedonic type, low utilitarian/high hedonic type, and low utilitarian/low hedonic type. 2) Both high utilitarian/high hedonic type and low utilitarian/high hedonic type had high level of perception to Internet shopping' benefit-risk.

  • The Semantic Web and its related technologies have been opening the era of information sharing via the Web. There are, however, several huddles still to overcome in the new era, and one of the major huddles is the issue of information integration, unless a single unified and huge ontology could be built and used which could address everything in the world. Particularly in the e-business area, the problem of information integration is of a great concern for product search and comparison at various Internet shopping sites and e-marketplaces. To overcome this problem, we proposed an ontology-driven mapping algorithm between heterogeneous product classification and description frameworks. We also peformed a comparative evaluation of the proposed mapping algorithm against a well-Down ontology mapping tool, PROMPT.

  • The internet has the capabilities of supporting and facilitating several forms of consumer interaction including one-to-one, one to many, or many-to-many interactions. Especially, previous studies revealed that the Online Word-of-Mouth communication is widely used as a source of customer's information seeking and purchase decision making. Even with this importance of the Online Word-of-Mouth communication on internet, few research has systematically addressed the issue. This study investigates the effect of interpersonal communication on consumers' information search activities and develops a model that depicts the key antecedents and mediating variables of interpersonal communication in internet shopping environment. The results are as follows: First, choice uncertainty, perceived risk, and knowledge uncertainty play an important role for perceived usefulness. Second, perceived usefulness has directly affected interactive communication of consumers' communication style. Thus, it is essential for internet companies to find ways to encourage their customers to engage in word-of-mouth communication.

  • With the development and spread of smart devices, the proportion of mobile shopping is gradually increasing, and the market for mobile gift certificates is also increasing. This study examines the usage status and acceptance attitude of mobile gift certificates for university students who are major customers of mobile gift certificates. Also, based on the extended integrated technology acceptance model (UTAUT2), the results of the analysis of the mediating effect of the intention of the user on the relationship between acceptance of mobile vouchers and recommendation intention were presented. As a result of the analysis, it was shown that the effort expectation, hedonic motivation, price utility, and habit had significant influence on the intention to use the mobile gift certificates. Also, the intention to use mobile gift certificates has mediating effects between effort expectation, hedonic motivation, price utility and recommendation intention. The results of this study can be applied to strategic marketing such as recruitment of new customers through mobile gift certificates while explaining customers' acceptance of technology to mobile gift vouchers or future prospective customers.
