  • In this study, the efficacy of Engineered Cementitious Composite(ECC) jacket for masonry fences subjected to lateral dynamic load was experimentally verified through a shaking table test, comparing it with the performance of an unreinforced masonry(URM) fence. Firstly, dominant frequencies, modal damping ratios and deformed shapes were identified through an impact hammer test. URM and ECC-strengthened fences with heights of 940mm and 970mm had natural frequencies of 6.4 and 35.3Hz, and first modal damping ratios of 7.0 and 5.3%, respectively. Secondly, a shaking table test was conducted in the out-of-plane direction, applying a historical earthquake, El Centro(1940) scaled from 25 to 300%. For the URM fence, flexural cracking occurred at the interface of brick and mortar joint(i.e., bed joint) at the ground motion scaled to 50%, and out-of-plane overturning failure followed during the subsequent test conducted at the ground motion scaled to 30%. On the other hand, the ECC-jacketed fence showed a robust performance without any crack or damage until the ground motion scaled to 300%. Finally, the base shear forces exerted upon the URM and ECC-jacketed fences by the ground motions scaled to 25~300% were evaluated and compared with the ones calculated according to the design code. In contrast to the collapse risk of the URM fence at the ground motion of 1,000-year return period, the ECC-jacketed fence was estimated to remain safe up to the 4,800-year return period ground motion.

  • Over the past decade, labor costs have increased relative to the cost of material hardware according to analysts in the construction industry. Therefore, the minimum weight design, which has been widely adopted in the literature for the optimal design of steel structures, is no longer the most economical construction approach. Presently, although connection- related costs is crucial in determining the most cost-effective steel structures, most studies on this subject focused on minimum-weight design or engaged in higher analysis. Therefore, in this study, we proposed a fabrication scheme for the most cost-effective moment-resisting steel frame structures that resist lateral loads without compromising overall stability. The proposed approach considers the cost of steel products, fabrication, and connections within the design process. The optimal design considered construction realities, with the optimal trade-off between the number of moment connections and total cost was achieved by reducing the number of moment connections and rearranging them using the combination of analysis that includes shear, displacement and interaction value based on the LRFD code and optimization scheme based on genetic algorithms. In this study, we have shown the applicability and efficiency in the examples that considered actual loading conditions.

  • As the limit state design method is applied as the design method of reinforced concrete structure, the ultimate state is considered when analyses or designing. In fact, when the reinforced concrete member is bent, there is a confining effect by stirrup, but the material curve of unconfined concretes applied when designing. In this study, to evaluate the suitability of the confined concrete model for flexural members, a 4-point bending test was conducted on RC simple beam with a double-reinforced rectangular cross-section, and the behavior of the member after yield was analyzed in detail using image processing method. For detailed analysis, the DIC method was adopted as an image analysis method, and the validity of DIC method was verified by comparing the measurement results with the LVDT. The distribution of the strain on the concrete surface calculated as a result of the DIC method could be obtained, and the average strain distribution of the cross-section was calculated. Using the average strain distribution, the stress distribution applied existing confined concrete model as a material curve could be derived. Through the comparison of the experimental results and the existing model application results, the suitability of the confined concrete model for RC flexural members having a rectangular cross-section was evaluated.
