This study intended to analyze reinforcement effects of PSC I girder bridges to which prestresses are introduced using V type of external strands. So that series of bridge loading tests are carried out on existing PSC I girder bridge for the cases of before-reinforcement and reinforcement. The measured results from tests being analyzed and compared with the ones from MIDAS structural analyzing program, the reinforcing effects of the reinforcement system adopted in this study were investigated. It is found out that when the V type systems are applied to the bridge girders, the slope of load distribution factor curves become lower improving soundness of bridge upper structure. And also it is confirmed that the reinforcement system in this study can be taken as helpful for improvement of both flexural and shear ability of PSC I girder bridges, as well as dynamic behavior. Furthermore it is found when the elastic pads are applied to the system, dynamic reinforcing effects are maximized.
Round piles of Korean larch were excavated from the foundation of ex-Chosunchongdokbu (ex-Chosun Governer-General Building), which was constructed in 1916 and dismantled later in 1996. By the record (Huh, 1996), the Korean larch logs were logged from the Yalu river area near Mt. Baekdu in North Korea. At present, however, Korean larch is not so popular in South Korea. The latewood ratio profiles and strength properties (longitudinal compression, shear, longitudinal tensile, and bending) were obtained. The ratio of latewood from pith to bark increased up to 25 years, and then it showed constant tendency at 40% with some variances. From the microscopic observation, however, the latewood ratio decreased from the heartwood to the sapwood. Compression strength was greater and bending strength was a little lower than the previous reports (references 13~15), which might be attributed to the strength reduction of old structural members by aging or damage in the compression specimens than the bending ones. The flat-grained specimens for the shear and tension test showed higher coefficient of variation (COV) than the edge-grained ones. For the better comparison of results, in case of shear and tensile strength tests, the strength values of the edge-grained specimens were thought to be adopted rather than those of flat-grained ones.

In this paper, non-linear analysis was performed for Reinforced Concrete (RC) walls using different macroscopic models subjected to cyclic loading, and the analytical results were compared with previous experimental studies of RC walls. ASCE41-06 (American Society of Civil Engineers) specifies that the hysteresis behaviors of RC walls are different due to the aspect ratio of the walls. For a comparison between analytical and experimental results, a slender wall with an aspect ratio exceeding 3.0 and a squat wall with an aspect ratio of 1.0 were selected among previous research works. For the non-linear analysis, each test specimen was modeled using two different macroscopic methods: the first representing the flexural behavior of the RC wall, and the second considering the diagonal shear in the web of the wall. Through nonlinear analysis of the considered RC walls, the analytical difference of a slender wall was negligible due to the different macroscopic modeling methods. However, the squat wall was significantly affected by the considered components of the modeling method. For an accurate performance evaluation of the RC building with squat walls, it would be reasonable to use a macroscopic model considering diagonal shear.

Two types of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures having irregularity in the lower two stories were selected as prototypes, and nonlinear time history analysis was performed using OpenSees to verify the analysis technique and to investigate the seismic capacity of those buildings. One of the buildings studied had a symmetrical moment-resisting frame (BF), while the other had an infilled shear wall in only one of the exterior frames (ESW). A fiber model, consisting of concrete and reinforcing bar represented from the stress-strain relationship, was adapted and used to simulate the nonlinearity of members, and MVLEM (Multi Vertical Linear Element Model) was used to simulate the behavior of the wall. The analytical results simulate the behavior of piloti-type high-rise RC building structures well, including the stiffness and yield force of piloti stories, the rocking behavior of the upper structure and the variation of the axial stiffness of the column due to variation in loading condition. However, MVLEM has a limitation in simulating the abrupt increasing lateral stiffness of a wall, due to the torsional mode behavior of the building. The design force obtained from a nonlinear time history analysis was shown to be about $20{\sim}30%$ smaller than that obtained in the experiment. For this reason, further research is required to match the analytical results with real structures, in order to use nonlinear time history analysis in designing a piloti-type high-rise RC building.

Due to the 1989 Loma Prieta, 1995 Hyogoken Nambu earthquakes, etc, a number of bridge columns were collapsed in flexure-shear failures as a consequence of the premature termination of the column longitudinal reinforcement. Nevertheless, previous researches for the performance of bridge columns were concentrated on the flexural failure mode. It is well understood that the seismic behaviour of RC bridge piers was dependent on the performance of the plastic hinge of RC bridge piers, the ductility of which was desirable to be computed on the basis of the curvature. Experimental investigation was made to evaluate the variation of the curvature of the plastic hinge region for the seismic performance of earthquake-damaged RC columns in flexure-shear failure mode. Seven test specimens in the aspect ratio of 2.5 were made with test parameters: confinement ratios, lap splices, and retrofitting FRP materials. They were damaged under series of artificial earthquakes that could be compatible in Korean peninsula. Directly after the pseudo-dynamic test, damaged columns were retested under inelastic reversal cyclic loading under a constant axial load, $P=0.1f_{ck}A_g$. Residual seismic capacity of damaged specimens was evaluated by analzying the moment-curvature hysteresis and the curvature ductility. Test results show that the biggest curvature was developed around 15cm above the footing, which induced the column failure. It was observed that RC bridge specimens with lap-spliced longitudinal steels appeared to fail at low curvature ductility but significant improvement was made in the curvature ductility of RC specimens with FRP straps wrapped around the plastic hinge region. Based on the experimental variation of the curvature of RC specimens, new equivalent length of the plastic hinge region was proposed by considering the lateral confinement in this study. The analytical and experimental relationship between the displacement and the curvature ductility were compared based on this proposal, which gave excellent result.

This study developed the Time-split Mixing Model (TMM) which can represent the pollutant mixing process on a three-dimensional open channel through constructing the conceptual model based on Taylor's assumption (1954) that the shear flow dispersion is the result of combination of shear advection and diffusion by turbulence. The developed model splits the 2-D mixing process into longitudinal mixing and transverse mixing, and it represents the 2-D advection-dispersion by the repetitive calculation of concentration separation by the vertical non-uniformity of flow velocity and then vertical mixing by turbulent diffusion sequentially. The simulation results indicated that the proposed model explains the effect of concentration overlapping by boundary walls, and the simulated concentration was in good agreement with the analytical solution of the 2-D advection-dispersion equation in Taylor period (Chatwin, 1970). The proposed model could explain the correlation between hydraulic factors and the dispersion coefficient to provide the physical insight about the dispersion behavior. The longitudinal dispersion coefficient calculated by the TMM varied with the mixing time unlike the constant value suggested by Elder (1959), whereas the transverse dispersion coefficient was similar with the coefficient evaluated by experiments of Sayre and Chang (1968), Fischer et al. (1979).

In this study, the efficacy of Engineered Cementitious Composite(ECC) jacket for masonry fences subjected to lateral dynamic load was experimentally verified through a shaking table test, comparing it with the performance of an unreinforced masonry(URM) fence. Firstly, dominant frequencies, modal damping ratios and deformed shapes were identified through an impact hammer test. URM and ECC-strengthened fences with heights of 940mm and 970mm had natural frequencies of 6.4 and 35.3Hz, and first modal damping ratios of 7.0 and 5.3%, respectively. Secondly, a shaking table test was conducted in the out-of-plane direction, applying a historical earthquake, El Centro(1940) scaled from 25 to 300%. For the URM fence, flexural cracking occurred at the interface of brick and mortar joint(i.e., bed joint) at the ground motion scaled to 50%, and out-of-plane overturning failure followed during the subsequent test conducted at the ground motion scaled to 30%. On the other hand, the ECC-jacketed fence showed a robust performance without any crack or damage until the ground motion scaled to 300%. Finally, the base shear forces exerted upon the URM and ECC-jacketed fences by the ground motions scaled to 25~300% were evaluated and compared with the ones calculated according to the design code. In contrast to the collapse risk of the URM fence at the ground motion of 1,000-year return period, the ECC-jacketed fence was estimated to remain safe up to the 4,800-year return period ground motion.

In many other countries framed structures with inadequate lateral strength and stiffness have been strengthened by providing reinforced concrete infilled wall. There is a general agreement among researchers those infilled walls have 3-5times greater lateral strength compared with bare frame. The main objective of this research is to investigate the behavior and strength of reinforced concrete frames infilled with concrete block and cast-in-place reinforced concrete panels used for strengthening the structure against seismic action. For this purpose three 1/3 scale, one-bay, one-story reinforced concrete infilled frames were tested under reversed cyclic loading simulating the seismic effect. The results indicate that infilled walls increase both strength and stiffness significantly under lateral loads. Especially Strength capacity and initial stiffness of CIP infilled wall increased 3.8 times and 6.6 times higher than lightly reinforced concrete frame.

In this study, practical design method of coupling beams is proposed. The member forces varies according to the location of the members and the members at 25%~40% of building height shows large member forces. The 100mm increase of wall thickness causes 3~4% variation of member forces and the 100MPa increase of concrete strength decrease approximately 3% of member forces. The required strength of coupling beams is twice the resistant strength and 80% reduction of coupling beam stiffness is necessary to fulfill the design criteria. The stiffness reduction of coupling beams is not necessary over the entire stories and the strength reduction range can be estimated considering design requirements.

An enhanced degenerated shell finite element (FE), which has been developed for inelastic analysis of reinforced concrete structures is described in this paper. Generally, Reissner-Mindlin (RM) assumptions are adopted to develop the degenerated shell FE so that transverse shear deformation effects is considered. However, it is found that there are serious defects such as locking phenomena in RM degenerated shell FE since the stiffness matrix has been overestimated in some situations. As remedies of locking phenomena, reduced integration, incompatible mode and assumed strain method have been used. Especially, the assumed strain method has been successfully used in many FEs. But contrarily, there is a few investigation on the performance of the assumed strains in the inelastic analysis of concrete structures. Therefore, shell formulation is provided in this paper with emphasis on the terms related to the stiffness matrix based on assumed strain method and microscopic concrete material model. Finally, the performance of the present shell element is tested and demonstrated with several numerical examples. From the numerical tests, the present result shows a good agreement with experimental data or other numerical results.
