  • Effects of rotary oscillation on unsteady laminar flow past a circular cylinder have been investigated in this study. Numerical simulations are performed for the flow at Re=100 in the range of 0.2<$\Omega$<2.5 and 0.02<$St_f$<0.8, where $\Omega$ and $St_f$ are, respectively, the maximum rotation velocity and rotation frequency normalized by the free-stream velocity and cylinder diameter. Results show that rotary oscillation has significant effects on the flow. When the rotation frequency is near the natural vortex-shedding frequency, lock-on occurs and the lock-on frequency range becomes wider as the rotation velocity increases. In a certain range of the rotation frequency and velocity, modulations in the velocity, lift and drag signals occur and this modulation frequency is expressed as a linear combination of the rotation frequency and vortex-shedding frequency. The mean drag and amplitude of the lift fluctuations show local minima near the boundary between the lock-on non and lock-on regions.

  • Numerical investigations were conducted to study the convective phenomena of an initially stably stratified salt water solution with lateral heating in a uniformly rotating annulus. The method of investigation is the finite difference analysis of the basic conservation equation for an axisymmetric, unsteady, double-diffusive convection and calculation is made for R $a_{\eta}$=2*10$^{5}$ and Ta=10$^{7}$ ~ 2.5*10$^{8}$ . Formation of layered flow structure, merging process of layers, the corresponding temperature and concentration distributions, Nu variation with time are examined. Numerical results show that in each layer, the temperature profile looks 'S'-shaped and the concentration profile is uniform due to the convective mixing. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly. As the effect of the rotation increases, the generation of rolls at hot wall, the formation and merging of layers are delayed. The average Nu shows the trend of conduction heat transferees the effect of the rotation increases.n increases.

  • High-efficiency and high-quality machining has become a fact of life for numerous machine shops in recent years. And high-efficiency machining is the most significant tool to enhance productivity. In this study, to achieve high-efficiency machining in turning process, a spindle speed optimization method was proposed based on a cutting power model. The cutting force and power were estimated from the cutting parameters such as specific cutting force, feed, depth of cut, and spindle speed. The time delay due to the acceleration or deceleration of spindle was considered to predict a more accurate machining time. Especially, the good agreement between the predicted and measured cutting forces showed the reliability of the proposed optimization method, and the effectiveness of the proposed optimization method was demonstrated through the simulation results associated with the productivity enhancement in turning process

  • Experimental investigations have been made to study the double-diffusive nature of convection of an initially stratified salt-water solution due to heating from below in a rotating cylindrical cavity. The objective is to examine the flow phenomena and the heat transfer characteristics according to the changes in temperature gradient, concentration gradient and rotating velocity of cavity. Thermal and solutal boundary conditions at side wall are adiabatic and impermeable, respectively. The top and bottom plate are maintained each at constant temperature and concentration. The cavity is put into a state of solid body rotation. Like the stationary case, the types of initially-formed flow pattern are classified into three regimes depending on the effective Rayleigh number and Taylor number; stagnant flow regime, single mixed-layer flow regime and successively formed multi-mixed layer flow regime. At the same effective Rayleigh number, the number of initially-formed mixed layer and its growth rate decrease as the effect of rotation increases. The temperature and concentration profiles are both uniform in each layer due to convective mixing in the layered-flow regime, but look both liner in stagnant flow regime and single mixed-layer flow regime. At the interface between adjacent layers, the temperature changes smoothly but the concentration changes rapidly.

  • In this study, a performance model of the smart UAV propulsion system with ducts, tip jets and variable main nozzle, which has flight capability of the rotary wing mode for the take-off/landing and low speed forward flight as well as the fixed wing mode for high speed forward flight, has been newly developed With the proposed model, steady-state performance analysis was performed at various flight modes such as rotary wing mode, fixed wing mode, compound ing mode and altitude as well as at flight speed conditions. In investigation of performance analysis. it was noted that the operational capability of the propulsion system was limited due to the duct losses depending on each flight mode, and the limitation with the altitude variation case had much greater than that with the flight speed variation case.

  • For non-linear analysis of stiffened shell structures, the total Lagrangian formulation is presented based upon the degenerated shell element. Geometrically correct formulation is developed by updating the direction of normal vectors and taking into account second order rotational terms in the incremental displacement field. Assumed strain concept is adopted in order to overcome shear locking phenomena and to eliminate spurious zero energy mode. The post-buckling behaviors of stiffened shell structures are traced by modeling the stiffener as a shell element and considering general transformation between the main structure and the stiffener at the connection node. Numerical examples to demonstrate the accuracy and the effectiveness of the proposed shell element are presented and compared with references' results.

  • The behavior of combustion-induced internal flow of SRM equipped with fin-slot grain and submerged nozzle is very complex and diverse. Cold air-flow test for 2D and 3D scale models of SRM has been done in order to specify the visualization method to analyze particular internal flow patterns such as roll-torque inducing flow. Swirl flow induced by asymmetric vortical tube also has been visualized through employing various light source and recording directions.

  • Flow-induced vibration analyses have been conducted for a 3D compressor blade model. Advanced computational analysis system based on computational fluid dynamics(CFD) and computational structural dynamics has been developed in order to investigate detailed dynamic responses of designed compressor blades. A fully implicit time marching scheme based on the Newmark direct integration method is used for computing the coupled aeroelastic governing equations of the 3D compressor blade for fluid-structure interaction problems. Detailed dynamic responses and instantaneous pressure contours on the blade surfaces considering flow-separation effects are presented to show the multi-physical phenomenon of the rotating compressor blade.
