A Study on the Efficiency of Multi-Legged Intersection Through Sensitivity Analysis (Based on the Four or Five Legged Intersection) (민감도 분석을 통한 다지교차로의 효용성 분석 연구 (4지.5지 교차로를 중심으로))

  • 본 연구는 민감도 분석을 통한 다지교차로의 효용성 분석 연구로 신호교차로, Roundabout, 그리고 Modern Roundabout의 특성을 고찰하고 교통류의 특성에 따른 민감도 분석을 통한 교차로 형태를 검토하는 것에 그 목적을 두고 있다. 이를 위해, 첫째, 신호교차로와 Roundabout의 특성과 사례를 고찰하였다. 둘째, 4지교차로와 5지교차로의 교통류 특성별로 교통량을 산정하여, TSIS Tool을 이용한 분석을 통해 교통류 특성별 신호 교차로와 Round about의 민감도를 비교하였다. 셋째, 민감도 비교를 통한 교통류 특성별 효율적인 교차로 형태를 도출하였다. 4지교차로의 경우, 첫째, 일반적으로 V/C비의 변화에 대해 V/C비가 0.7이하일 때는 Roundabout가 V/C비가 0.7을 초과할 때는 신호교차로가 효율적인 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, V/C비별 회전교통량의 변화와 회전교통량 변화별 V/C비 변화에서도 V/C비의 변화의 분석결과와 비슷한 양상을 보였다. 5지교차로의 경우, 첫째, 4지교차로와는 달리 전반적으로 신호교차로 보다는 Roundabout가 더 효율적인 교차로 형태로 나타났다. 둘째, V/C비별 회전교통량의 변화와 회전교통량 변화별 V/C비 변화에서는 V/C비가 0.8을 초과하고 우회전교통량비가 30%∼40%인 경우에 신호교차로가 조금 더 효율적인 것으로 나타났다.

A Study on the Estimation of Design Service Traffic Volume for Turbo Roundabout (국내 나선형 교차로 도입을 위한 적정교통량 산정연구)

  • It is generally known that a two-lane roundabout has some problems in safety such as increasing conflicts, typically merging and diverging conflicts and conflicts between entering traffic and exiting as well as turning traffic. To solve these problems, a turbo-roundabout had been developed and has successfully brought safer and more efficient operation in other countries. In this study, micro simulations using VISSIM were conducted to investigate the maximum value of service traffic volume. It was found that operation of turbo-roundabouts was influenced by traffic volume for each turning traffic, and the maximum values of traffic volume were values between 2,400 and 2,800 vehicles per hour as rates of traffic volume for each turning traffic. Typically, turbo-roundabouts have limited to operate in conditions with more than 30% for left-turning traffic volume.

  • This study deals with the operational effectiveness of roundabout. The roundabout is currently under consideration in our country depending on the result of existing researches, that the roundabout decreases delay and is environmentally friendly compared to the signalized intersection. The purpose of the study is to analyze the operational effectiveness of the roundabout by the change of pedestrian traffic volume. In pursing the above, this study gave particular emphasis to designing a network of roundabout, developing some scenarios for analysis including both entering traffic volume and pedestrians volume, and comparatively analyzing the average controlled delay time per vehicle. In this study, VISSIM model was used as a tool for traffic simulation. The main results are as follows. First, as a result of analyzing a traffic delay based on the pedestrian traffic volume, pedestrian traffic volume was analyzed to have a great impact on the roundabout operation. Second, the more pedestrian traffic volume were evaluated to indicate the more traffic delay. When the entering volumes with 1,000persons/hour (pedestrian volume) were more than 800pcph in the single-lane and 1,600pcph in the double-lane roundabout, the operational efficiencies of signalized intersections were evaluated to be better than those of roundabouts.

A Study on the Applicability and Introduction Standards of Cut-through Roundabouts (직결형 회전교차로의 적용 가능성과 도입 기준에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to test applicability of cut-through roundabouts at a congested intersection and to provide the traffic volume ranges for theirs application. Various test scenarios were developed according to variation of total traffic volume, left-turn ratio to total traffic volume, and ratio of major road traffic volume to minor road traffic volume. In addition, three intersection types of cut-through roundabout, roundabout, and signalized intersection were compared with respect to delay times for each scenario, resulted from the simulation using VISSIM. In case of the ratio of major road traffic volume to minor road traffic volume, 6:4, the delay times of cut-through roundabout decreased up to 30% of left-turn ratio to total traffic volume for 400vphpl, up to 20% for 500vphpl, up to 10% for 600vphpl. In case of the ratio, 7:3, they are the same as 6:4 for 400vphpl, 500vphpl, and 600vphpl but they decreased up to 30% for 300vphpl and up to 10% for 700vphpl. In case of the ratio, 8:2, they are the same as 7:3 for 400vphpl, 500vphpl, and 700vphpl but they were reduced by 10% to 30% for 300vphpl and 20% for 600vphpl. It is concluded that the smaller left-turn ratio to total traffic volume as well as the ratio of minor road traffic volume to major road traffic volume is, the more effective in reducing delay times the cut-through roundabout is. Cut-through roundabouts can be expected to reduce delay times at a signalized intersections with traffic conditions above-mentioned.

A Study of Optimal Distance between Signalized Intersections and Roundabouts Considering Unbalanced Traffic Conditions (교통량 불균형을 고려한 회전교차로와 신호교차로간 최적거리 산정에 관한 연구)

  • An important factor that causes delays at roundabouts is unbalanced traffic conditions. The majority of domestic studies have tendedto focus on the proportion of entering traffic rather than conflicting traffic in order to explain unbalanced traffic conditions. Also, there is scant research on the proper distance between a signalized intersection and a roundabout. In this study, therefore, unbalanced traffic conditions and optimal distance between two intersections were analyzed using SIDRA software based on the Gajwa-ro roundabout in Icheon, where unbalanced traffic conditions occur during afternoon peak hours, and its position is 295 m from a signalized intersection. It was found that a state of unbalanced traffic conditions in the form of conflicting traffic caused delays at Gajwa-ro roundabout, and the queuing length on each approach was removed when there was 850 m of distance between two intersections.

Analysis on the effectiveness of roundabout at the diamond interchange using VISSIM (VISSIM을 이용한 다이아몬드 입체교차점에서의 회전교차로 효과분석)

  • This study deals with the roundabout installed at the diamond interchange. The goal is to analyze the relative effectiveness of roundabout to signalized intersection. In pursuing the above, this study gives the particular attentions to comparing the performances using VISSIM software. The main results analyzed are as follows. First, the single and double roundabouts are analyzed to have the rapid change of delay in the case of total entering vehicles of more than 2,400pcph for directional rate 10:5:5, 2,800pcph for 10:8:2, and 4,400pcph for 10:2:8. Second, the roundabouts are evaluated to be more effective than signalized intersection in the case of total entering vehicles of less than 4,000pcph for directional rate 10:5:5, and 4,400pcph for 10:2:8. In the case of directional rate 10:8:2, double roundabout of total entering vehicles less than 5,600pcph is analyzed to be more effective than signalized intersection. Finally, the performance of double roundabout is analyzed to be very similar to that of single roundabout in the case of total entering vehicles less than 4,400pcph. However, the double roundabout is evaluated to be more effective than single in the case of total entering vehicles more than 4,400pcph.

Traffic Volume Criteria for Roundabouts Based on Left-Turn Ratio (좌회전 비율에 따른 회전교차로 전환기준 교통량 산정)

  • All roundabouts are designed based on "Roundabout Design Guideline, Ministry of Land and Transportation, 2014" in Korea. The guideline also provides the traffic volume criteria to convert from signalized intersections to roundabouts. While the criteria are based on capacity of roundabouts, left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches are not considered to calculate the capacity of roundabouts. Therefore it is difficult to apply the traffic volume criteria in the real world. In this study, we studied the impact of left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches into capacity of roundabouts using micro-simulation. It was found that the capacity of roundabouts is changed according to left-turn ratio and the number of lane on approaches.

A Study on Roundabout Modeling and Saturation for Level Of Service (회전교차로 서비스수준 분석을 위한 모형개발 및 포화도 산정 연구)

  • The service level of the roundabout is estimated through an analytic model using the geometrical characteristics and parameter values obtained from the observations. Although a lot of researches have been conducted on the rotational intersection through an analytical model, the case of variable combinations is enormous, suggesting the range and service level of appropriate traffic volume according to the case study or limited characteristics through simulation. Therefore, in this study, the roundabout analysis model was constructed by using Visual Basic Application to make variable adjustment more easily. The constructed model analyzes traffic conditions according to various situations and analyzes the characteristics of roundabouts. As the result of analysis, the more the ratio of left turn and U-turn, the more the traffic distribution of each approached road was biased to one side, the limit traffic volume of the roundabout decreased and congestion appeared quickly. In particular, the more uneven the distribution of traffic was, the less the Saturation traffic volume was affected by the turnover rate.

Analysis on the Applicability of Roundabout to the Diamond Interchange (다이아몬드 입체교차점에서의 회전교차로 도입에 따른 운영효과 분석)

  • The purposes of the study is to comparatively analyze the applicability of roundabout to the diamond interchange. In pursuing the above, this study give the particular attentions to comparing the performances of roundabout with those of TWSC and signalized intersection based on the aaSIDRA software. The main study results are as follows. First, when the entering traffic volumes(ETV) are more than 480pcph, the single-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than 4-leged unsignalized intersection and when ETV are $480{\sim}1,880pcph$, double-lane roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than 4-legged intersection Second, when ETV are more than 980pcph at the single-lane intersection and $1,600{\sim}3,680pcph$ at the double-lane intersection, roundabout is analyzed to be more effective than other 3-legged intersections. In summary, when the roundabout installs at the interchange, it is important to consider the range of ETV.

A Study on Appropriate Traffic Volume Calculation for Revitalizing Roundabout Installation (국내 회전교차로 활성화를 위한 적정교통량 산정에 관한 연구)

  • A roundabout is a form of circular intersection in which traffic travels counterclockwise around a central island and in which entering traffic must yield to circulating traffic. It has been known that a roundabout provides substantially better operational and safety characteristics than other intersections including rotaries. Recently, a roundabout has started to be constructed due to its efficiency, safety, and other advantages of a roundabout comparing other intersections in Korea. However, there has been no guideline to be used to decide appropriate intersection types considering given conditions of the intersections. To solve this problem, the guideline with traffic volume to choose the suitable intersection types was developed based on analysis results using the SIDRA software which is generally used to analyze operational effects of roundabouts. It was found that a roundabout is more efficient than signalized intersection when the traffic volume is between 125 and 450 veh/h on one lane road and roundabout is not recommended when there are more than 30% left turn traffic. The optimal traffic volume provided in this research will be usefully used in planing and designing roundabouts in Korea.
