This study aims at establishing a technique for sailing yachts model tests with sailing condition. It is very important to estimate a ship's potential speed performance before building a real ship. Several methods are used to estimate a ship's potential speed performance such as using parent ship data, standard vessel chart and model test. Model test is the most precise among these options. In korea. model testing is widely used with general vessels but not with sailing yachts. Because sailing yachts are propelled with heeling and leeway. using the wind. another method is needed to estimate their speed. The new model test. which is different from tests for upright general vessels, is in a great demand. In this paper. we describe a test method for the sailing yacht model test. based on Masuyama's equation of motion. And we describe choosing scale ratio. production process and materials of the model. Also. various ways of measuring instruments. attaching jigs and adjusting calibration are described so that they can be utilized as useful data for model testing.

It is necessary to accurately evaluate the resistance performance and estimate the towing power of a tugboat for safety towing operation at actual seas. In this study, we have carried out the model tests firstly to investigate the resistance performance and flow characteristics around the tugboat in still water. The experiments are performed in infinite depth in circulation tank using 1/33.75 scaled model from 5kts to 10kts(designed speed 7kts) considering the effect of adverse and favorable current. Then the numerical calculations are executed to analyze the response amplitude operator and added resistance on tugboat due to the waves. The results obtained by the present computation are compared with the those acquired from the experiments in still water. As a result, it is noted that the added resistance become larger at head sea and higher speed conditions. We can also observe that the EHP increase 70 percent in comparison with those in still water.

The authors adopt the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle(UUV), which has taken the shape of manta(Sohn et al. 2006). They call here it Manta-type Unmanned Undersea Test Vehicle(MUUTV). MUUTV is designed with the similar concept of UUV called Manta Test Vehicle(MTV), which was originally built by the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, USA(Lisiewicz and French 2000, Sirmalis et al. 2001, U.S. Navy 2004). The present study deals with evaluation of extreme motion of MUUTV at large attack angles. Extreme motion contains, for example, rising and depth change due to operation of hovering thrusters attached to MUUTV, lateral motion due to ocean current applied to MUUTV at low advance velocity, and so on. Numerical simulation technique has been utilized. The previous mathematical model on manoeuvring motion of MUUTV(Bae et al. 2009a) is basically adopted. Based on the results of present model experiment on extreme motion, the mathematical model is revised and supplemented in order to describe extreme motion. The hydrodynamic derivatives related to extreme motion are obtained from present model experiment and the other derivatives are referred to previous work(Bae et al. 2009a).

An experimental study has been carried out at circulating water channel to investigate the non-breaking and breaking waves generated by a submerged circular cylinder steadily moving under the free surface. Free surface profiles and pressure distributions on cylinder surface were measured at various submerged depths of cylinder. They were complemented by the measurements of velocities, head losses and turbulence intensities in the wakes of body and "breaker". Part 1 of this three-part paper describes the experimental arrangement and the patterns of wave profile and pressure distribution at various depths of submergence. These databank contributions are of special interest in traditional ship hydrodynamics. In Part 2, special focuses are made to elucidate the viscous and turbulent aspects of flow field. Finally Part 3 will deal with the visualization of instantaneous vortical flow to study the mutual interaction between vorticies shedded from the free-surface and the cylinder using a Particle Image Velocimetry.
Because a change in the natural frequencies of a structure indicates structural health problems, monitoring the natural frequencies crucial. Long-term measurement for the Uldolmok tidal current power plant structure has shown that its natural frequencies fluctuate with a constant cycle twice a day. In this study, lab-scale tests to investigate the causes of these natural frequency fluctuations were carried out in a circulating water channel. Three independent variables in the tests that could affect the fluctuation of the natural frequencies were the water level, current velocity, and boundary condition between the specimen and the bottom of the circulating water channel. The experimental results were verified with numerical ones using ABAQUS. It was found that the fluctuation of the natural frequencies was governed by a decrease in stiffness due to the boundary condition much more than the effect of added mass. In addition, it was found that the natural frequency would decrease with an increase in the tidal current velocity because of its nonlinearity when the boundary condition was severely deteriorated due to damage.

The results of a numerical study on the performance of a propeller operating near a free surface are presented in this paper. The simulations are verified through comparison with experimental data, which was performed in a circulating water channel. The propeller performance as a function of the submerged depth was investigated. The effect of the propeller advance ratio on the wave patterns, flow structures around propeller, and thrust and torque of the propeller was also studied. Air ventilation was not observed for low advance coefficients. However, the simulations showed that wave pattern was strongly related to the tip vortex strength and inflow velocity. When air ventilation does not occur, the deduction of propeller thrust and torque increase for high advance coefficients.

In this study, conceptual design of the fore-body hull form of catamaran type dredging vessel was performed that can effectively remove the contaminated sediments in coastal seabed. The hull form was simpled for the easy hull construction and the resistance performance was investigated to find out the effect of hull form parameters between variation of waterline and angle of entrance, etc. The relation between resistance performance and characteristics of free surface flows according to variation of bow forms was investigated by model testing in the circulating water channel and using Ansys CFX. The improvement of ship resistance performance to the wave resistance decrease due to improved wave pattern has been verified according to move the stem and the volume of the shoulder to the fore part of the vessel.

The present study deals with the flow over a flat plate with repeated roughness elements of 2-dimensional rectangular shape, which can be applied into the study on the natural geographical roughness and the turbulent flow on roughened solid surface. Experiment was performed using PIV technique in the circulating water channel. Results showed that the flow over roughness elements was characterized by the high shear flow emanating from top of roughness element and the recirculating region formed at the trough of two roughness elements. In general, the ratio between the spacing and the height of roughness elements plays a crucial role in developing the flow pattern near wall surface.

This study deals with the flow over a flat plate with repeated roughness elements of 2-dimensional rectangular shape, which can be applied into the study on the natural geographical roughness and the turbulent flow on roughened solid surface. Part 1 of the study showed that the ratio between the spacing and the height of roughness elements plays a crucial role in developing the flow pattern near wall surface. The present study complements the turbulence characteristics, the utilization of friction velocity as well as integral parameters. Results confirmed that k-type roughness(s/H=7 or 14) is certainly a more effective means than d-type roughness (s/H=3.5) in thickening the viscous region.
Due to a high tidal range of up to 10 m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. The turbine, which initially converts the tidal energy, is an important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system. Its performance is determined by design variables such as the number of blades, the shape of foils, and the size of a hub. To design a turbine that can extract the maximum power on the site, the depth and duration of current velocity with respect to direction should be considered. Verifying the performance of a designed turbine is important, and requires a circulating water channel (CWC) facility. A physical model for the performance test of the turbine should be carefully designed and compared to results from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis. In this study, a horizontal axis tidal current turbine is designed based on the blade element theory. The proposed turbine's performance is evaluated using both CFD and a CWC experiment. The sealing system, power train, measuring devices, and generator are arranged in a nacelle, and the complete TCP system is demonstrated in a laboratory scale.
