A Newly Recorded Turfgrass Pest, Root-knot Nematode, Meloidogyne incognita, in Korean Golf Courses (골프장의 신 해충, 고구마뿌리혹선충의 발견)

  • 우리나라 골프장의 잔디 가해 해충과 천적을 조사하던 중 농림작물의 중요해충인 고구마뿌리혹선충을 Zoysia잔디에서 발견하였다. 고구마뿌리혹선충에 감염된 잔디는 새 뿌리가 발육하지 못하고 뭉툭하게 되어 황화현상과 함께 전반적으로 생육이 부진하였다. 감염된 잔디의 종은 들잔디(Zoyais japonica)와 금잔디(Zoysia matrella), 버뮤다글라스(Cynodon sp.)였다. 그리고 Z. japonica는 고구마뿌리혹선충의 새로운 기주로 기록된다. 조사 골프장의 대부분이 정도의 차이는 있었지만 피해를 받고 있었다. 잔디에서 뿌리혹선충이 기록되기는 우리나라에서는 처음이다.

Effect of Aeration Rates on Emissions of Oxygen and Sulfur compound gases during Composting of Dairy Manure (우분(牛糞) 퇴비화시(堆肥花時) 공기주입률(空氣注入率)이 산소 및 황화합물 가스 배출(排出)에 미치는 영향(影響))

  • This experiment used the enclosed bench-scale reactors was conducted to find out optimal aeration rate for reducing the emission of odors and producing the good-quality compost with the mixture of dairy manure and rice straw. The reactors with gas sampler were aerated at four different rates of 0.09, 0.18, 0.90 and $1.79l\;min^{-1}kg^{-1}$dry solids for 574 hours. The oxygen content within composting pile instantly decreased after aeration. Oxygen limitation(below 15%) in the treatments of $0.90l\;min^{-1}kg^{-1}$ and less was exponentially negative relationship with aeration rates and in the range of 35 to 300 hours after aeration. However, the treatment of $1.79l\;min^{-1}kg^{-1}$ didn't show the oxygen limitation. The oxygen consumption rate and the cumulative amount of oxygen consumed by different aeration rates was ranged in $0.80{\sim}1.57O_2g\;h^{-1}\;kg^{-1}VS^{-1}$, $460{\sim}900O_2g\;kg^{-1}VS^{-1}$, respectively, and they were high in the order of 0.90, 1.79, 0.18, $0.09l\;min^{-1}kg^{-1}$. The maximum oxygen consumption rate was estimated in the range of $1.2{\sim}1.3lmin^{-1}kg^{-1}$. The emission concentrations of sulfur compounds such as hydrogen sulfide, sulfur dioxide and methylmercaptan were remarkably high in the initial composting time. Then they were rapidly decreased with the passing of composting time and clearly with increasing aeration rates. Their average concentrations were in the range of 0.03~2.18, 0~0.50, $0.07{\sim}3.38mg\;kg^{-1}$, respectively and high in the order of methylmercaptan, hydrogen sulfide, and sulfur dioxide. Concentrations of sulfur compounds emitted from composting showed exponentially negative relationship at 1% statistically with the oxygen concentration. It was estimated that hydrogen sulfide and methylmercaptan suddenly increased in the level of 5% oxygen concentration and below, that they were little emitted in 15% and over but sulfur dioxide was emitted in the level of 20% oxygen.

Evaluation of the Sediments Contamination in the Lake Sihwa (시화호 퇴적토의 오염도 평가 및 효과적 관리방안)

  • An investigation on the polluted sediments in the Lake Sihwa and the benthos that inhabited on the sediments was conducted. Cost effective remediation alternatives were derived form the results of the investigation. The sediment samples taken from four sampling points out of thirteen showed relatively high heavy metal (particularly copper) concentrations which exceeded the Effects Range Low (ERL) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, USA. The four sampling points were located in front of industrial complexes. Although the heavy metals appeared to have affected the growth of the benthos, the concentration of it did not exceed the criteria of dredging that were developed by Netherlands or the State of Washington, USA. However, contamination by organic matters and sulfur compounds was severe, which exceeded the criteria of dredging that were established in Japan. The sediments taken from the four sampling points which were contaminated with heavy metals showed higher organic matter content in general. The organic matters in the sediments depleted oxygen in summer, which appeared to be fatal to the benthos. A comprehensive analysis on the sediments, benthos, and other environmental impact from the contaminated sediments drew a conclusion that the benthonic environment of the Lake Sihwa needed a stepwise remediation, giving a particular emphasis on the clean up of the sediments upstram of the Lake which could cause odor problems to the nearby residential area.

Selective Phase Transformation of Arsenopyrite by Microwave Heating and their Enhancement Au Recovery by Thiocyanate Solution (마이크로웨이브 가열에 의한 황비철석의 선택적 상변환과 티오시안산염 용액에 의한 Au 회수율 향상)

  • In order to investigate selective phase transformations and to determine the maximum Au leaching factors from microwave treated Au-bearing complex sulfides, a microscope, SEM-EDS analysis, and thiocyanate leaching tests were performed. When the Au-bearing complex sulfides were exposed to microwave heating, increasing the microwave exposure time increased temperature and decreased weight. Arsenopyrite was first selectively transformed to hematite, which formed a concentric rim structure. In this hematite, oxygen and carbon was detected and always showed high iron content and low arsenic content due to arcing and oxidation from microwave heating. The results of the leaching test using microwave treated sample showed that the maximum Au leaching parameters was reached with 0.5 g concentration thiocyanate, 2.0 M hydrochloric acid, 0.3 M copper sulfate and leaching temperature at$60^{\circ}C$. Under the maximum Au leaching conditions, 59% to 96.69% of Au was leached from the microwave treated samples, whereas only 24.53% to 92% of the Au was leached from the untreated samples.

Sediment Oxygen Consumption Rate and Hydrogen Sulfide Release by Dissolved Oxygen Depletion in Hypoxic Area of the Gamak Bay, Korea (가막만 빈산소 해역의 퇴적물 산소소모율과 용존산소 고갈에 의한 황화수소 용출)

  • This study investigated sediment oxygen consumption rates and geochemical characteristics of sediment in hypoxic area of the Gamak Bay based on the chamber experiments and geochemical analyses. The organic carbon contents of surface sediment in the Gamak Bay showed that the inner bay area has higher organic carbon content than those of the outer bay. They toward the outer bay, contents dropped off. The vertical profiles of calcium carbonate ($CaCO_3$) content at piston core sediment assumed that the hypoxia have been frequently occurred during past century in the northern inner bay. The benthic chamber experiments were conducted in February, May, August and November 2010, 2011 in the hypoxic area of the Gamak Bay. In the sediment incubation experiment with chamber at site C3 in the northern inner bay and site C17 in the southern outer bay, the sediment oxygen consumption rate ranged from $3.98mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ to $12.43mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and $3.28mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ to $8.18mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$, respectively. When the oxygen was completely depleted, the toxic hydrogen sulfide was released with $1.38mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ and $1.3mmol\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$, respectively.

Change of Oxidation/Reduction Potential of Solution by Metal-Reducing Bacteria and Roles of Biosynthesized Mackinawite (금속환원미생물에 의한 수용액의 산화/환원전위 변화 및 생합성 맥키나와이트의 역할)

  • In order to identify if bacteria surviving in soils and groundwater can change the oxidation/reduction potential of groundwater, Eh values of solution that contained bacteria were measured for 2 weeks. The Eh values of the solution reacted with sulfate-reducing bacteria decreased from -120 mV to -500 mV in 5 days, and $Desulfuricans$ was superior to $Vulgaris$ in reducing the solution. The Eh value was relatively higher for the solution containing $Shewanella$, iron-reducing bacteria, showing -400 mV. During the Eh decrease by the metal-reducing bacteria, a sulfide mineral such as mackinawite (FeS) started precipitating through the microbial reducing process for sulfate and ferric iron. These results show that the ORP of natrual groundwater may be sensitive to the geomicrobial respiration. In addition, a subsurface environment where groundwater is highly reduced and sulfide minerals are largely biogenerated may be a good place to retard the migration of oxidized radionu-clides by making them precipitated as reduced forms.

Effects of Dietary Supplementation of Complex Probiotics and Enzyme on Improvement of Farm Environment and Performance of Finishing Pigs (복합생균효소제 급여가 돈사 환경개선과 비육돈 생산성에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the effect of dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme on air quality in finishing pig building and the performance of finishing pigs. A total 117 crossbred $[(Landrace{\times}Yorkshire){\times}Duroc]$ pigs were randomly arranged into nine groups and assigned to three treatments. Pigs were fed a basal diet supplemented with 0, 0.1% level of probiotics and 0.1% level of complex probiotics and enzyme until the market weight for 42 days of the experimental period. Ammonia and hydrogen sulfide concentrations in the finishing pig building were significantly (p<0.05) decreased by dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme compared with those of control, however, indoor carbon dioxide concentration was not affected by dietary supplementation of probiotics or complex probiotics and enzyme. Average daily feed intake and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved (p<0.05) with dietary supplementation of 0.1% complex probiotics and enzyme; however, average daily gain was not affected by dietary supplementation of probiotics or complex probiotics and enzyme. In conclusion, the results obtained from this experiment suggest that the dietary supplementation of complex probiotics and enzyme for finishing pigs may improve air quality in the finishing pig building and the performance.

Application of biofilter for removing malodomus gas generated from compost factory (퇴비화 '공장에서 발생되는악취'를 제거하기 위한 Biofilter의 적용)

  • A biofilter was established to remove the ammonia, which is representative nitrogen-contained malodorous gas. in a compost factory. Removal efficiency of ammonia and hydrogen sulfide also was investigated. A quantity of malodor gas produced in a compost factory was affected greatly by the weather. compost states and working condition of a fertilizing mixer, and the produced gas concentrations doubled by above various parameters. By operating a water scrubbing system for removing water-soluble malodorous gases effectively. we could improve the removal efficiency over three times. We investigated long-term stability of biofilter under continuous gas flow(SV=500h-1) for 100 days. The results showed 30 days of microbial retention time. After the days, deodorization efficiency of biofilter was kept steady state. and the removal efficiency was kept over 95% for ammonia and 97% for hydrogen so]fide. respectively. The electric consumption of the biofilter, which could treat malodorous gas of 100$\textrm{m}^3$/min, applied in the compost factory was evaluated about 80u0day and water consumption was 80~100$\ell$/day. These results concluded that the biofilter is a excellent deodorization technology as well as cost-effective for removing malodorous gas produced in a compost factory.

Characteritics of Toluene and $H_2S$ Removal in a Biotrickling filters with Plastic & Woodchip composite Media (복합플라스틱계 담체를 이용한 Biotrickling filters의 Toluene과 황화수소 제거특성)

  • This study developed composition-plastic media with woodchips and plastic as main materials, and examined the performance of media. Compared to the existing commercial media, the media had similar performance in removal efficiency and microbes attaching characteristic, and was evaluated that they are distinguished from economic side. Performance test of media was conducted to examine the removal capacity of toluene and hydrogen sulfide in a gas stream by using a lab-scale biotrickling filter systems packed with them. At a volumetric loading of $1.5\;m^3/hr$ with inlet concentration 260 ppm and empty bed residence time (EBRT) 42s, the toluene removal efficiency was shown over 90%, and the maximum elimination capacity of toluene in the biotrickling filter was $77g/m^3{\cdot}hr$. Effective co-treatments of $H_2S$ and Toluene were observed in the lab-scale biotrickling filters. The maximum elimination capacity of $H_2S$ was $100\;g-S/m^3{\cdot}hr$. Up to 100 ppm, the concentration of $H_2S$ did not have an effect on toluene removal efficiency, but the removal efficiency of toluene decreased with increasing inlet $H_2S$ concentration.
