The Efficiency of Fe Removal for Pyrophyllite by Ammonia Leaching Solution, and Their Dissolution Kinetics (암모니아 용출용액을 이용한 저 품위 엽납석으로부터 Fe 제거 효율과 용해 동역학)

  • In order to remove Fe impurity from low-grade pyrophyllite ore, the effect of certain variables such as particle size, concentration of sulfuric acid, amount of ammonium sulfate, added hydrogen peroxide, and temperature were studied. The euhedral cubic pyrites were observed in the low-grade pyrophyllite ore by reflected light microscopy, and quartz and dickite were identified in the sample by XRD analysis. The results of the Fe removal experiments showed that the best Fe removal parameters were when the particle size was at -325 mesh, the addition of $H_2SO_4$, $(NH_4)_2SO_4$ and $H_2O_2$ was at a 2.0 M, 10.0 g/l, and 3.0 M concentration, respectively, and at a $70^{\circ}C$ leaching temperature. In the dissolution kinetics analysis, the dissolution of Fe from the pyrite surface was a controlled chemical reaction, and the Fe dissolution reaction was proportioned to 0.066/R, $[H_2SO_4]^{1.156}$, $[(NH_4)_2SO_4]^{0.745}$, $[H_2O_2]^{0.428}$.

Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium Sources on Growth and Yield of Strawberry 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' in Fertigation Culture (딸기 '설향' 및 '매향'의 관비재배 시 질소 및 칼리의 공급원이 생육 및 수량에 미치는 영향)

  • The experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of nitrogen and potassium sources on growth and yield of strawberry 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang' in fertigation culture. The plant fresh and dry weight were higher in urea + potassium sulfate and ammonium sulfate + potassium sulfate as nitrogen and potassium sources than others in both varieties. But there were no significant difference among nitrogen and potassium sources in other growth characteristics, such as plant height, no. of leaf, crown diameter etc. Also, the marketable yield of fruit were higher in urea + potassium sulfate and ammonium sulfate + potassium sulfate in 'Seolhyang' than other treatments. 'Maehyang' was better in both treatments but there was no significant difference. The fruit qualities, such as total soluble solid, hardness, acidity, vitamin C content were not significant difference among the treatments. The acidity of soil was tended to decrease but EC was tended to increase highly in ammonium sulfate treatments as a nitrogen source. As above results, the urea and potassium sulfate were recommended as nitrogen and potassium sources for the fertigation culture of strawberry 'Seolhyang' and 'Maehyang'.

Ammoniacal Leaching for Recovery of Valuable Metals from Spent Lithium-ion Battery Materials (폐리튬이온전지로부터 유가금속을 회수하기 위한 암모니아 침출법)

  • Recycling technologies would be required in consideration of increasing demand in lithium ion batteries (LIBs). In this study, the leaching behavior of Ni, Co and Mn is investigated with ammoniacal medium for spent cathode active materials, which are separated from a commercial LIB pack in hybrid electric vehicles. The leaching behavior of each metal is analyzed in the presence of reducing agent and pH buffering agent. The existence of reducing agent is necessary to increase the leaching efficiency of Ni and Co. The leaching of Mn is insignificant even with the existence of reducing agent in contrast to Ni and Co. The most conspicuous difference between acid and ammoniacal leaching would be the selective leaching behavior between Ni/Co and Mn. The ammoniacal leaching can reduce the cost of basic reagent that makes the pH of leachate higher for the precipitation of leached metals in the acid leaching.

Rheological Characteristics and Molecular Weight of Ammonium-Sulfate Fractions of Tara Gum (염석법에 의한 타라검 분획들의 분자량 및 리올로지 특성)

  • This study aimed at characterizing the rheological properties and molecular weight of tara gum fractionated with ammonium sulfate. Tara gum was separated into six fractions (F1-F6) at different concentrations of ammonium sulfate, ranging from 12.21 to 28.67% (w/w). The yield of the tara gum fractions ranged between 4.98 and 17.47%, and their intrinsic viscosity ranged from 9.38 to 12.44 dL/g. The highest values of Huggins coefficient (k') and viscosity-molecular mass were observed in fraction F3. The shear viscosity of the tara gum fractions was measured by a cone-plate viscometer, clearly showing shear thinning behavior. Size-exclusion chromatography results showed that the molecular weight ranged between 635.42 and 776.71 kg/mol, and the F3 fraction exhibited higher values of molecular weight.

A Study on the Leaching Effect and Selective Recovery of Lithium Element by Persulfate-based Oxidizing Agents from Waste LiFePO4 Cathode (과황산계 산화제에 따른 폐LiFePO4 양극재에서 리튬의 침출 효과와 선택적 회수에 대한 연구)

  • In waste lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, the cathode material contains approximately 4% lithium. Recycling the constituent elements of batteries is important for resource circulation and for mitigating the environmental pollution. Li contained in the waste LFP cathode powder was selectively leached using persulfate-based oxidizing agents, such as sodium persulfate, potassium persulfate, and ammonium persulfate. Leaching efficiency and waste LFP powder properties were compared and analyzed. Pulp density was used as a variable during leaching, which was performed for 3 h under each condition. The leaching efficiency was calculated using the inductively coupled plasma (ICP) analysis of the leachate. All types of persulfate-based oxidizing agents used in this study showed a Li leaching efficiency over 92%. In particular, when leaching was performed using (NH4)2S2O8, the highest Li leaching percentage of 93.3% was observed, under the conditions of 50 g/L pulp density and an oxidizing agent concentration of 1.1 molar ratio.

Purification and characterization of biochemical properties of hemolysin from Vibrio fluvialis (Vibrio fluvialis 유래의 hemolysin 정제와 생화학적 특성)

  • Hemolysin (VFH) of V. fluvialis, which is a pathogenic bacteria, causing watery diarrhea with vomiting, abdominal croup, was purified. V. fluvialis was cultivated in BHI medium and the culture supematant was precipitated by ammonium sulfate. The protein was purified by chromatographies on columns of DEAE-cellulose and Mono-Q. Molecular weight of the purified VFH was estimated as 79kDa by SDS-PAGE. The optimal temperature for a maximum hemolytic activity was at around 35$^{\circ}C$ and the activity was decreased at 4$0^{\circ}C$ Cytotoxicity of VFH was also investigated using RTG-2 cell line. LDH assay study showed that 50$\mu\textrm{g}$/m1 of VFH release 80% of total cellular LDH (lactate dehydrogenase) from RTG-2 cell and microscopic observation also showed the morphological change of cell.

  • We investigated the biochemical properties of insect defensin expressed and secreted from Saccharomyces corevisiae. The defensin showed extremely high resistance to boiling for up to 30 min and to pH values tested from 2.0 to 12.0. The treatment of defensin with various proteases abolished antibacterial activity. However, amylases, cellulase, lipase and catalase had no effect on the activity. The defensin was purified to homogeneity through ammonium sulfate concentration of culture supernatant, SP-Sepharose column chromatography and RP-HPLC. Tricin-SDS-PAGE analysis revealed that the molecular weight of the defensin was about 4.0 kDa. The antibacterial activity of the purified defensin was verified by renaturation of stained gel and gel pouring assay using Micrococcus luteus as a test organism.

  • Adenosine-5'-triphosphatase$(F_1-ATPase)$ in the Lentinus edodes was fractionated by ammonium aulfate 30% saturation and purified by Sephadex G-200 gel filtration in three times. Three kinds of protein fractions of $F_1-ATPase$ were isolated from this mushroom, and fraction I and ll showed its activity for the substrate, adenosine-5'-triphosphate. Its optimum pH and temperature were found to be pH 7.6 and $58^{\circ}C$, and its thermal stability was stabled for 30 min. at $20-30^{\circ}C$. The Km value of this enzyme was 1.81 mM.

  • Nylon fabric was grafted for the purpose of the development of detergency against the hemoglobin as a protein soil. By free-radical producing chemical initiator systems the graft using acrylic acid(AA) as a hydrophilic vinyl monomer was performed to change surface energies in the presence of ammonium persulfate(APS) as an initiator and then acrylic acid grafted Nylon was treated with NaOH solution. The surface morphology for Nylon-g-NaAA with changing graft rate were studied by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) The properties of the Nylon such as diameter tenacity elongation contact angle and the hemoglobin removal were also investigated. The diameter of grafted Nylon fiber increased as the graft ratio increased. The tenacity of grafted Nylon also increased with increasing graft ratio up to 15% The elongation however decreased gradually according to graft, The contact angle decreased after graft and alkaline treatment. The amount of hemoglobin on the grafted Nylon increased in proportion to the graft ratio. Hemoglobin was easily removed from grafted Nylon while it was difficult to be removed from ungrafted Nylon. The detergency of hemoglobin for grafted Nylon decreased when the graft ratio exceeded 15% The removal of hemoglobin increased markedly with increasing hemoglobin content and revolution speed. Therefore the removal of hemoglobin was improved due to graft and alkaline treatment.

Purification and Characterization of Extracellular Adenosine Deaminase from Streptomyces sp. J-350P (Streptomyces sp. J-350P가 생산하는 세포외 Adenine Deaminase의 부분정제 및 성질)

  • After series of purification by means of ammonium sulfate fractionation, the 1st and 2nd DEAE-Cellulose, DEAE-Sephadex A-50, and Sephacryl S-200 superfine gel filtration, the activity of extracellular adenine deaminase from Streptomyces sp. J-350P increased 1764 fold and the yield was 0.3% of original activity. The enzyme was stable at the pH range 6.5 to 8.5 and at up to 5$0^{\circ}C$. The optimum pH and temperature of the enzyme were around 6.5 and 35$^{\circ}C$. The molecular weight ol the enzyme was estimated as 36, 000 by calibrated Sephacryl S-200 superfine column chromatography.
