  • Since the mid-twentieth century, geology has gradually evolved as an interdisciplinary context in South Korea. The journal of Economic and Environmental Geology (EEG) has a long history of over 52 years and published interdisciplinary articles based on geology. In this study, we performed a literature review using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), an unsupervised machine learning model, to identify geological topics, historical trends (classic topics and emerging topics), and association by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts of 2,571 publications in EEG during 1968-2020. The results showed that 8 topics ('petrology and geochemistry', 'hydrology and hydrogeology', 'economic geology', 'volcanology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'general and structural geology', 'geophysics and geophysical exploration', and 'clay mineral') were identified in the EEG. Before 1994, classic topics ('economic geology', 'volcanology', and 'general and structure geology') were dominant research trends. After 1994, emerging topics ('hydrology and hydrogeology', 'soil contaminant and remediation', 'clay mineral') have arisen, and its portion has gradually increased. The result of association analysis showed that EEG tends to be more comprehensive based on 'economic geology'. Our results provide understanding of how geological research topics branch out and merge with other fields using a useful literature review tool for geological research in South Korea.

  • Korean Journal of Remote Sensing (KJRS), leading the field of remote sensing and GIS in South Korea for over 37 years, has published interdisciplinary research papers. In this study, we performed the topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA), a probabilistic generative model, to identify the research topics and trends using 1) the whole articles, and 2) specific articles related to natural and environmental disasters published in KJRS by analyzing titles, keywords, and abstracts. The results of LDA showed that 4 topics('Polar', 'Hydrosphere', 'Geosphere', and 'Atmosphere') were identified in the whole articles and the topic of 'Polar' was dominant among them (linear slope=3.51 × 10-3, p<0.05) over time. For the specific articles related to natural and environmental disasters, the optimal number of topics were 7 ('Marine pollution', 'Air pollution', 'Volcano', 'Wildfire', 'Flood', 'Drought', and 'Heavy rain') and the topic of 'Air pollution' was dominant (linear slope=2.61 × 10-3, p<0.05) over time. The results from this study provide the history and insight into natural and environmental disasters in KRJS with multidisciplinary researchers.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze Korean middle school student achievement in environmental science based on the TIMSS 2003 (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study), a student comparison of 46 participating nations. Korea ranked the fourth with a mean score of 554 in environmental science. However, all 3 environment science topics assessed in TIMSS are not included in the Korean science curriculum through 8th grade, even though they are included in most other participating nations' curricula. The average percent correct of items was analyzed according to the main topic, the item type and the cognitive domain. Items that showed differences between the average percent correct of Korea and the international average as well as differences between the average percent correct of boys and girls were further analyzed. Results revealed that Korean students performed better than the international average, especially in 'use and conservation of natural resources', multiple-choice items, and items requiring 'factual knowledge'. Also, male students demonstrated significantly higher achievement than female students. On the other hand, Korean students showed relatively lower achievement in constructed-response items, items that contained content they had not learned in science lessons and items requiring descriptions of the uses and effect of science and technology. Moreover, Korean student lacked understanding about acid rain, global warming, and ozone layer destruction. Korean female students showed relatively lower environmental conceptions and lower performance on items requiring data analysis than Korean male students. On the basis of these results, this study suggested that topics of environmental science be included in the science curriculum and taught in the science classroom to help middle school students more fully comprehend environmental issues.

  • This study aims to find the direction of subject-divisional plan and the change of composition factors in university Library. To confront new information environment, change of service providing environment, academic characteristics of universities. and users' information needs, the collection and service of university libraries are needed to be restructured based on subject-divisional plan. To adopt subject divisional plan effectively. it is necessary to recognize necessity and reasonability of subject - divisional plan by analyzing a change of physical, intellectual, human, and user factors in the libraries from the aspect of subject-divisional plan. That is, the collection and service of university libraries should be reorganized according to the subjects along with such changes as below. First, people came to consider convenience of space and path of building inside more than past. Second, collection becomes constructed and materials are located based on effectiveness rather than logicality. Third, subject oriented service of library became active through developing the subject abilities of librarians. Fourth, users have tendency to visit libraries lot a special subject matter.

  • The particulate matter (PM) has emerged as a hot topic around the world as it has been reported that PM is related to an increase in mortality and prevalence rates. In South Korea, the importance of PM has been recognized since the late 1990s, and various studies on PM have been conducted. This study investigated the PM research topics and trends for papers (D=2,764) published in Research Information Sharing Service (RISS) using topic modeling based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA). As a result, a total of 10 topics were identified in the whole papers, and the PM research topics were classified as 'PM reduction (Topic 1)', 'Government policy and management (Topic 2)', 'Characteristics of PM (Topic 3)', 'PM model (Topic 4)', 'Environmental education (Topic 5)', 'Bio (Topic 6)', 'Traffic (Topic 7)', 'Asian dust (Topic 8)', 'Indoor PM (Topic 9)', 'Human risk (Topic 10)'. In particular, the proportion of papers on topics 'Government policy and management (Topic 2)', 'PM model (Topic 4)', 'Environmental education (Topic 5)', and 'Bio (Topic 6)' to the toal number of papers increased over time (linear slope > 0). The results of this study provide the new literature review methodology related to particulate matter and the history and insight.

  • This study explored the environmental health behavior intervention study for pregnant women using a scoping review. The evidence synthesis of intervention methods, research topics, outcome variables, and effectiveness was performed. Eight studies were extracted from the databases of PubMed, Cochrane Library, and RISS. The topics were nutritional interventions and behavioral interventions that can reduce exposure to fine dust, heavy metals, chemicals, and electromagnetic waves to pregnant women. The interventions were conducted through lectures, cartoons, workshops, interviews, messages, and home visits. The effect of the intervention was found to improve the health behaviors of pregnant women and to solve problems in the residential environment. Therefore, the environmental health behavior interventions for pregnant women were effective.

  • With the rapid change of information environment, this study suggests role models and strategies for the university library in Korea based on the subject specialization. By analyzing the current situation and problems of university library, this research presents various directions for the subject specialization. Major research issues are (1) university library's subject specialization directions, models, and factors, (2) subject specialized librarian' s role and education system, (3) basic framework for customized information service and user education, (4) enhancement of subject specialization through subject gateway, (5) academic information sharing system.
