In order to meet the strict emission regulations for internal combustion engines based on fossil fuel, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicles and vessels is gradually increasing. Diesel engines have high power, good fuel economy, and lower $CO_2$ emissions, and their market shares are increasing in commercial vehicles and passenger cars. However, NOx is generated in the localized high-temperature combustion regions, and particulate matter is formed in the zones of diffusion combustion. LNT and urea-SCR catalysts have been developed for after-treatment of the exhaust gas to reduce NOx in diesel vehicles. This study aims to improve the NOx reduction performance of Cu SCR catalyst, which is widely used in light, medium, and heavy-duty diesel engines. The de-NOx performance of $5Cu-2ZrO_2$/93Zeolyst(Si/Al=13.7) SCR catalyst was about 5-50% higher than that of $5Cu-2ZrO_2$/93Zeolite(Si/Al=2.9) at catalyst temperatures of $300^{\circ}C$ or higher. The zeolite had lower metal dispersion than zeolyst, and the reaction rate of the catalyst decreased as the average particle size increased. The $10Cu-2ZrO_2$/88Zeolyst catalyst loaded with 10wt% Cu had the highest NOx conversion rate of 40% at $200^{\circ}C$ and about 65% at $350^{\circ}C$. The ion exchange rate of Cu ions increased with that of Al, the crystalline compound of zeolite, and the de-NOx performance was improved by 20-40% compared to other catalysts.

A simulation procedure which can represent time-dependent nuclear characteristics of TRIGA Mark-III reactor is developed. CITATION, a multi-group diffusion-depletion program, has been utilized as calculational tool. The group structure employed in this study consists of 7 groups: -3-fast and 4-thermal-which is conventionally utilized in TRIGA type reactor analysis. Three-dimensional nuclear characteristics are synthesized by combining results from two-dimensional plane calculation and two-dimensional cylinder calculation, since direct three-dimensional approach is not yet possible. An effort ia made to develope a method which can extract effective zone and group dependent bucklings by neutron diffusion theory rather than conventional zone and/or group independent Ducklings by neutron transport theory, since neutron leakage is quite high for small core such as research reactors. It is turned out that the method developed in this study gives satisfactory results. The calculation is performed under assumptions that all control rods are fully withdrawn, that no samples are inserted in the irradiation holes and that the core is located in the center of the reactor pool. Burnup-dependent variation of core excess reactivity, time dependent change of Xe-135 poisoning and reactivity worth of rotary specimen rack are calculated and compared with operation records. Neutron flux and power distribution as well as neutron spectrum in each irradiation .facility are presented.

Experiments were conducted in a constant-pressure combustion chamber to investigate the effects of hydrocarbon addition on cellular instabilities of syngas-air flames. The measured laminar burning velocities were compared with the predicted results computed using reliable kinetic mechanisms with detailed transport and chemistry. The cellular instabilities that included hydrodynamic and diffusional-thermal instabilities of the hydrocarbon-added syngas-air flames were identified and evaluated. Further, experimentally measured critical Peclet numbers for fuel-lean flames were compared with the predicted results. Experimental results showed that the laminar burning velocities decreased significantly with an increase in the amount of hydrocarbon added in the reactant mixtures. With addition of propane and butane, the propensity for cell formation was significantly diminished whereas the cellular instabilities for methane-added syngas-air flames were not suppressed.

The policy-making and technological development of eco-friendly automobiles designed to increase their supply is ongoing, but the internal combustion engine still accounts for approximately 95% of automobiles in use. To meet the stricter emission regulations of internal combustion engines based on fossil fuels, the proportion of after-treatments for vehicles and (ocean going) vessels is increasing continuously. As diesel engines have high power and good fuel economy in addition to less CO2 emissions, their market share is increasing not only in commercial vehicles, but also in passenger cars. Because of the characteristics of the diesel combustion, however, NOx is generated in localized high-temperature combustion regions, and particulates are formed in the zones of diffusion combustion. LNT and urea-SCR catalysts have been developed for the after-treatment of exhaust gas to reduce NOx in diesel vehicles. This study examined the effect of a containing promoter on SCR catalysts to cope with the severe exhaust gas regulation. The de-NOx performance of the Mn-SCR catalyst was the best, and the de-NOx performance was improved as the ion exchange rate between Mn ion and Zeolyst was good and the activation energy was low. The de-NOx performance of the 7Cu-15Ba/78Zeoyst catalyst was 32% at $200^{\circ}C$ and 30% at $500^{\circ}C$, and showed the highest performance. The NOx storage material of BaO loaded as a promoter was well dispersed in the Cu-SCR catalyst and the additional de-NOx performance of BaO was affected by the reduction reaction of the Cu-SCR catalyst. Among the three catalysts, the 7Cu-15Ba/Zeolyst SCR catalyst was resistant to thermal degradation. The same type of CuO due to thermal degradation migrates and agglomerates because BaO reduces the agglomeration of the main catalyst CuO particles.
We are living in the 21st century, a new era of high-technology. Due to movements in population towards certain preferred areas, caused by material and technological advancement, growth has occurredn beyond the metropolis, leading to the development of the so-calleda "megalopolis." This development has changed the culture of housing, notably the characteristics of high-rise buildings, and underground facilities (such as subways and shopping centers), and has generally enlarged the scale of the facilities. Due to the increase in the number of single-family households, - notably ones including only the nuclear family, there has been a growing overpopulation problem, with apartments and urban housing developments expanding at rates beyond institutional safety regulations. In this study, we analyze the phenomenon of fire spreading in apartment buildings through actual apartment fire case studies, including that of the MunjonPonpuri apartment building. It was found that the speed at which the fire spreads is lower in apartments without than in those with an extended balcony. Based on the findings from case studies and the test results, we propose a series of safety countermeasures and responses for apartment fires.
The effects of strain rate and preferential diffusion of $H_2$ on flame extinction are numerically studied in interacting premixed syngas-air flames with fuel compositions of 50% $H_2$ + 50% CO and 30% $H_2$ + 70% CO. Flame stability diagrams mapping lower and upper limit fuel concentrations at flame extinction as a function of strain rate are examined. Increasing strain rate reduces the boundaries of both flammable lean and rich fuel concentrations and produces a flammable island and subsequently even a point, implying that there exists a limit strain rate over which interacting flame cannot be sustained anymore. Even if effective Lewis numbers are slightly larger than unity on extinction boundaries, the shape of the lean extinction boundary is slanted even at low strain rate, i.e. $a_g=30s^{-1}$ and is more slanted in further increase of strain rate, implying that flame interaction on lean extinction boundary is strong and thus hydrogen (as a deficient reactant) Lewis number much less than unity plays an important role of flame interaction. It is also shown that effects of preferential diffusion of $H_2$ cause flame interaction to be stronger on lean extinction boundaries and weaker on rich extinction boundaries. Detailed analyses are made through the comparison between flame structures with and without the restriction of the diffusivities of $H_2$ and H in symmetric and asymmetric fuel compositions. The reduction of flammable fuel compositions in increase of strain rate suggests that the mechanism of flame extinction is significant conductive heat loss from the stronger flame to ambience.

Experiments were conducted to clarify role of the outermost edge flame on low-strain-rate flame extinction in buoyancy-suppressed non-premixed methane flames diluted with He and $N_2$. The use of He curtain flow produced a microgravity level of $10^{-2}-10^{-3}g$ in $N_2$- and He-diluted non-premixed counterflow flame experiments. The critical He and $N_2$ mole fractions at extinction with a global strain rate were examined at various burner diameters (10, 20, and 25 mm). The results showed that the extinction curves differed appreciably with burner diameter. Before the turning point along the extinction curve, low-strain-rate flames were extinguished via shrinkage of the outermost edge flame with and without self-excitation. High-strain-rate flames were extinguished via a flame hole while the outermost edge flame was stationary. These characteristics could be identified by the behavior of the outermost edge flame. The results also showed that the outermost edge flame was not influenced by radiative heat loss but by convective heat addition and conductive heat losses to the ambient He curtain flow. The numerical results were discussed in detail. The self-excitation before the extinction of a low-strain-rate flame was well described by a dependency of the Strouhal number on global strain rate and normalized nozzle exit velocity.
Multi-hole type oxygen combustion burner was developed for industrial gasification and smelting furnace. We investigated characteristics of flame, radiation transfer, and soot emission in the convectional oxygen burner with respect to the feeding condition of fuel and oxygen. Regarding the results of the conventional burner, we designed new burners which have larger fuel consumption rate and radiation heat transfer. We changed the size and hole number and shape of the exit plane of the burner. In addition, the performance of the burner was tested with respect to the feeding condition of the fuel and air: Normal Diffusion flame(NDF) and Inverse Diffusion Flame(IDF). We investigated the flame configuration, radiation heat transfer, and soot formation by using a CCD camera, heat flux meter, and Laser Induced Incadescence(LII), respectively. The stable operating condition was obtained by the flame configuration and the flame of the burner which has dented exit plane was more stable in whole operating conditions. The characteristics of radiative heat transfer were sensitive to the feeding condition of reactants and the flame of 75% primary oxygen and 25% secondary oxygen of the IDF case shows maximum radiation heat transfer. The soot volume fraction of the flame was measured in the axial direction of the flame and the amount of soot volume fraction is proportion to the radiation heat transfer. As a result, we can get the optimal operating condition of the newly designed burner which enhances the characteristics of flame stabilization and radiation heat transfer.
Experimental study on comparison of diffusive-thermal self-excitation with buoyancy-driven one due to accumulation of partially premixed, preheated mixture in front of edge flame was conducted in horizontally and vertically injected laminar free-jet flames with an applied DC electric field of -10 kV. The application of horizontal injection method with the DC electric field to jet flames was experimentally designed to suppress heat-loss-induced self-excitation and thereby to highlight the definite difference between both diffusive-thermal and buoyancy-driven self-excitations with the same order of O(1.0 Hz), in that diffusive-thermal self-excitation has not been so far found experimentally in laminar jet flames. Flame stability maps in vertically and horizontally injected jet flames are presented. The distinct modes of individual self-excitation are shown to be well described by their own phase diagrams. The results show that buoyancy-driven self-excitation due to the accumulation of partially premixed, preheated mixtures in front of edge flame is branched from the buoyancy-induced self-excitation with O(10 Hz) due to a flame flicker. Once the buoyancy-driven self-excitation appears, it suppresses buoyancy-induced as well as diffusive-thermal self-excitation. The key characteristics for individual self-excitation are discussed and their functional dependencies of Strouhal number upon related physical parameters are also presented.

This research is to find a means of reducing diesel engine combustion noise with none or minimum sacrifice of engine performance by investigating the influence of Cylinder Pressure Level(CPL). For this purpose, modified Wiebe's combustion function, considering the heat release curve as a combustion of both premixed and diffusive combustion portion, was exclusively used to obtain the indicator diagram and computer coeds were developed for the numerical analysis. Following are the results of this research. (1) CPL increases almostly with lag of ignition timing increasing .alpha. and decreasing. theta.$_{d}$, but at the crank angle with the maximal efficiency, CPL is independent of .alpha. and .theta.$_{d}$ with constant value of 200 dB especially at the low frequency. (2) For the constant ignition timing, the effects of .alpha. and .theta.$_{d}$ on CPL were the most significant at the frequency of about 1KHz and 300Hz respectively. (3) For the constant value of .alpha. and .theta.$_{d}$, CPL increases linearly with load but thermal efficiency increase very rapidly with maximum value of load Q$_{T}$=30-40 MJ/Kmol, then starts to decrease slowly. (4) The most effective way of reducing combustion noise without sacrificing thermal efficiency, is to decrease .alpha.. In the case of constant .alpha., there always exists a optimum value of .theta.$_{d}$ with respect to the various compression ratio.o..atio.o..
