Spectrophotometric Determination of Rare Earths by Ternary Complex Formation with MTB and Surfactant (글로방전 발광분광법에 의한 란탄족 원소의 정밀 분석. MTB와 계면활성제의 삼성분 착물 형성에 의한 희토류 원소의 분광광도법 정량에 관한 연구)

  • Spectrophotometric determination of rare earth elements with MTB and the composition ratio were investigated in the presence of surfactants of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), Triton X-100, dodecyltrimethylammonium bromide (DTMAB) and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) at pH 6.5. The colour development between MTB and rare earths in the presence of cationic surfactants was very stable and more sensitive than that in the absence of surfactants. The largest absorbance increase was provided by CPC, which was therefore chosen for determination of rare earth elements. REE-MTB-CPC complex has absorption maxima at 650 nm and obeys the Beer's law in the range of 0∼100 ng/ml. Molar absorptivity is $6.6{\sim}9.4{\times}10^4\;mol^{-1}l\;cm^{-1}$.

  • A new absorption spectrometric method for the determination of the Cr$_2O_7^{2-}$ ionin acidic media has been developed. The new method is based on the oxidation-reduction reaction of the HCr$O_4^-$ ion with H$_2$O$_2$forming a deep blue CrO(O$_2$) $_2$ andis coupled with a technique of flow injection analysis(FIA). The new method provides a linear calibration curve which accurately follows the Beer's law over a wide range of the analytical concentrations(2.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-6}$M~8.0 ${\times}$ $10^{-3}$M) of K$_2$Cr$_2$O$_2$. The sensitivity of the new method is approximately two times greater than the current method and the effects of the interfering substances such as V, Co, Ni, Fe, and Mn are almost negligible except Cu.

  • The electrical properties for $(Ba,Sr)_{1-x}Y_xTiO_3$(x=0.001∼0.009, BSYT) with a positive temperature coefficient of resistivity(PTCR) effect were investigated. The BSYT powder was prepared by oxalate coprecipitation method. It was found that the large PTCR effect was appeared up to 0.3 mol% and decreased above 0.5 mol% of the yttrium concentration. The plot of temperature vs. $1{\varepsilon}$m(T) above Curie temperature($T_c$) was agreed with Curie-Weiss law. The potential barrier calculated from measured resistivity and dielectric constant of specimens was high up to 0.3 mol% and reduced above 0.5 mol% of yttrium concentration as the curve of PTCR effect.

  • A new analytical reagent N-benzylisonitrosoacetylacetone imine (H-IAA-N-Bz) has been synthesized and identified its structure by IR, NMR and mass spectra. H-IAA-N-Bz forms a copper chloroform-soluble complex in a basic aqueous solution (pH = 7.0∼10.0). The other optimum conditions for the spectrophotometric study of the copper complex have been determined at 420nm. Beer's law is obeyed below the concentration of 64$\mu$g of copper per 10ml of chloroform. The composition of the copper complex has been found to be $Cu(IAA-N-Bz)_2$ and the over-all stability constant is calculated to be $8.55 {\times} 10^6$. The molar absorption coefficient, $\varepsilon$ of the $Cu-(IAA-N-Bz)_2 $complex is 3500l/$cm{\cdot}mol$.

  • The two dissociation constants of three amino acid, glycine, alanine, and tryptophan were measured by the conductometric method in the temperature from 15 to 35$^{\circ}$C and pressure up to 2,500bar in aqueous solution. The both dissociation constants were increased as the temperature increased but the pressure effect were not same as the temperature effect. The first constants were increased as the pressure increased but second constants were decreased except tryptophan. The characteristic properties of these amino acids were discussed from the thermodynamic properties of the dissociation reaction. The substituted effects of the reaction were deduced from Hammett reaction and substituted constants which were calculated from the dissociation constants.

High School Students’ Problem-Solving Strategy-Performing Ability Measured by an Essay-Type Test (서술형 검사로 측정한 고등학생의 문제 해결 전략 수행 능력)

  • In this study, high school students' problem-solving strategy-performing ability was measured by an essay-type test. The relationship between students' logical thinking ability and strategy-performing ability was also investigated. Four classes (N=187) were selected from two high schools in Seoul, and the strategy performance ability test and the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT) were administered. Evaluation scheme for strategy-performing ability consists of 7 subcategories - understanding given of problems, recalling related law, setting up subgoals, deriving physical quantities, logical progress, mathematical execution, and reviewing. The intercoder agreement for scaling was .92, which indicated substantial strength of agreement. The results revealed that students' ability of understanding given of problems and mathematical execution was relatively high. However, their ability of setting up subgoals and reviewing was very low. The total scores of the strategy performance ability test and all of the scores of each subcategory were significantly correlated with the GALT scores.

  • The dissociation constants of ${\beta}$-alanine and ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid were measured in the temperature range from 20 to $40^{\circ}C$ and pressure up to 2,500 bar by conductometric method. The both dissociation constants of respective amino acid increase with temperature increase but pressure effect is not same as the temperature. The $K_1$ increases as pressure increases but $K_2$ decreases. The properties of these amino acids were discussed in terms of the thermodynamic properties of the dissociation reaction. A relationship between the dissociation constants and the distance between substituted groups of amino acid was discussed. The substituted effects of the reaction were deduced from Hammett reaction and substituted constants which were calculated from the measured dissociation constants.

  • In this study, the effects of visual organization and cooperative learning in problem-solving strategy were investigated. Three classes (N=127) at a high school were assigned to SV (Strategy-Visual organization) group, SVC (Strategy-Visual organization-Cooperative learning) group, and control group. After instructions, students' multiple-choice problem-solving ability, strategy performing ability, anxiety about chemistry learning, perception of involvement, and motivation to learning science were examined. Although multiple-choice problem-solving ability was not different significantly, there was a significant main effect in strategy performing ability. The scores of the SV and SVC groups were significantly higher than those of the control group, especially in the subcategories of problem understanding and recalling related principles. In the tests of perception of involvement and motivation to learning science, the scores of the SV and SVC groups were also significantly higher than those of the control group. However, problem-solving strategy using visual organization could not alleviate anxiety about chemistry learning.

  • The spectrophotometric determination of $Lu^{3+},\;Eu^{3+}$ and some other rare earths have been investigated using Methyl Thymol Blue(MTB) as spectrophotometric reagent. Rare earth elements form a stable complex with MTB abount pH 6.5 and the ratio of its complex is 1 to 1. MTB has a absorption maxima at 440nm and rare earth MTB complex has absorption maxima 610nm at pH 6.5, respectively. The absorbance of the rare earth MTB complex is stable in 7 hours after color developing and obey the Beer law in the range of $0{\sim}110{\mu}g/50ml$. The ligand such as phosphate, citrate and EDTA decrease the absorbance of its complex considerably, and this method has a poor selectivity of each rare earth element and the molar absorptivity is $1.2{\sim}2.0{\times}10^4mol^{-1}{\cdot}l{\cdot}cm^{-1}$. In methyl alcohol, ethyl alcohol and acetone medium we did not find out any absorption change of the rare earth MTB complex.

  • The relative viscosities and osmotic coefficients of solutions of urea, 1,3-dimethyl-urea(DMU), acetamide(AA), and propionamide (PA) in dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO), water, methanol, and in ethanol have been measured at 25 and $45^{\circ}$C by viscometry and osmometry. Viscosity increment in nonaqueous solutions decreased with increasing of the partial molal volumes of the solutes, but in aqueous solution the result was inversed. Viscosity increment of aqueous solution was smaller than that of aqueous DMU solution, but that of nonaqueous urea solution was larger than that of DMU. Amides, however, showed similar viscosity increment in any solvent.Osmotic coefficients of aqueous solution of urea were larger than those of DMU. In the nonaqueous solutions urea exhibited larger deviation from Raoult's law than DMU. The results indicated that urea molecules break water-structure in water, self-associate in DMSO, and showed larger solute-solvent interaction in alcohols than DMU. It can be also confirmed that amides break alcohol structure to a greater extent than any other solutes.
