Adsorption Characteristics of Functionalized Activated Carbon for High Temperature CO2 Capture (고온 이산화탄소 포집을 위한 기능성 활성탄의 흡착특성)

  • Activated carbon impregnated with polyethyleneimine (PEI) was evaluated as a functionalized adsorbent for $CO_2$ capture. The $CO_2$ adsorption characteristics of the adsorbents was undertaken using GC/TCD, BET surface area and FT-IR. A series of adsorbents were synthesized by impregnating 10, 30, 50 wt% of PEI on activated carbons and were investigated $CO_2$ adsorption capacity at high and low adsorption temperature. The $CO_2$ adsorption capacity at $20^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$ was as follow: AC > PEI(10)-AC > PEI(30)-AC > PEI(50)-AC at $20^{\circ}C$ and PEI(10)-AC > PEI(30)-AC > PEI(50)-AC > AC at $100^{\circ}C$. Adsorption capacities of amine functionalized AC was lager than virgin AC at high temperature due to chemisorption by amino-group content. From the results, the PEI(10)-AC showed one of the most promising adsorbents for $CO_2$ capture from flue gas at high temperature.

Synthesis of CNT on a Camphene Impregnated Titanium Porous Body by Thermal Chemical Vapor Deposition (티타늄 다공체에 담지된 Camphene과 화학기상증착법을 이용한 CNT 합성)

  • In this study, titanium(Ti) meshes and porous bodies are employed to synthesize carbon nanotubes(CNTs) using methane($CH_4$) gas and camphene solution, respectively, by chemical vapor deposition. Camphene is impregnated into Ti porous bodies prior to heating in a furnace. Various microscopic and spectroscopic techniques are utilized to analyze CNTs. It is found that CNTs are more densely and homogeneously populated on the camphene impregnated Ti-porous bodies as compared to CNTs synthesized with methane on Ti-porous bodies. It is elucidated that, when synthesized with methane, few CNTs are formed inside of Ti porous bodies due to methane supply limited by internal structures of Ti porous bodies. Ti-meshes and porous bodies are found to be multi-walled with high degree of structural disorders. These CNTs are expected to be utilized as catalyst supports in catalytic filters and purification systems.

  • Oxidative decomposition of 2, 4, 6-trichlorophenol(TCP) was studied in aqueous solution. Iron and manganese protoporphyrin [or tetrakis(p-carboxyphenylporphyrin)] and their polymer supported derivatives were used as catalysts, and $KHSO_5$ and tert-butyldroperoxide(TBHP) as oxidants. Metalloporphyrin itself shows very poor catalytic activity in oxidative decomposition of TCP with oxidant. However, very high catalytic activity was observed when metalloporphyrin was chemically bound to newly synthesized polymers or XAD2 resin. Additionally, it revealed much higher catalytic activity in the presence of water-soluble polymers having a electron-donating axial ligand such as pyridine and immidazole. Maleic acid and chloromaleic acid were found in the resulting solution by ESI-MS. Especially, XAD2-supported metalloporphyrins can be reused as catalysts due to insolubility to solvent, and stability against oxidant.

  • Spherical, ${\mu}m$-sized particles of barium titanyl oxalate were prepared by thermal decomposition of dimethyl oxalate in acidic barium and titanium solutions. Precipitation was carried out in the presence of several supporting anions. Spherical particles having a specific type of particle size distribution. i.e., unimodal or bimodal distribution, with mean size in the range of $0.2{\sim}3{\mu}m$, were formed depending on the supporting anions, oxalate ion generation rate and aging time. Particles of barium titanyl oxalate settled on the bottom of the beaker at the aging time of 120 min grew to the critical monosize of about $1.5{\sim}3{\mu}m$. XRD spectra and chemical analyses of barium titanate showed that barium titanyl oxalate with high qualities could be synthesized by choosing chloride ion as a supporting anion and increasing the reaction temperatures.

An Optochemical Sensor for the Determination of Divalent Transition Metal Ions Based on a Reactive Dye (반응성 염료를 이용한 2가 전이금속 측정용 광센서)

  • A reactive dye synthesized with an amine containing Eriochrome Black T derivative and cynauric chloride was immobilized on a cellulose membrane to construct an optical sensor for the detection of divalent transition metal ions in aqueous solution. The response of this reactive dye-based optical sensor was as sensitive as that of Eriochrome Black T in solution phase. Its typical detection limits for $Zn^{2+}$ and $Co^{2+}$ were $6.3{\times}10^{-5}mol/l$ and $2.5{\times}10^{-4}mol/l$, respectively. No loss in the sensitivity of reactive dye-based sensor was observed even the pH of flowing solutions continually varied for an extended period of time.

  • 4-(Dimethylamino)pyridinium dichromate was synthesized by the reaction of 4-(dimethylamino)pyridine with chromium(VI)trioxide in $H_2O$, and characterized by IR, EA and ICP. The oxidation of benzyl alcohol using 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium dichromate in various solvents showed that the reactivity increased with the increase of the dielectric constant, in the order: cyclohexen < chloroform < acetone < N,N-dimethylformamide. In the presence of hydrochloric acid(HCl), 4-(dimethylamino)pyridinium dichromate oxidized benzyl alcohol and its derivatives ($p-CH_3$, H, m-Br, $m-NO_2$) smoothly in N,N-dimethylformamide. Electron-donating substituents accelerated the reaction, whereas electron-withdrawing groups retarded the reaction. The Hammett reaction constant($\rho$) was -0.70 at 303K. The observed experimental data have been rationalized as follows: the proton transfer occurs after the prior formation of a chromate ester in the rate-determining step.

Awareness on Food Additives and Purchase of Processed Foods containing Food Additives in Middle School Students (가공식품의 식품첨가물에 대한 중학생의 인식 및 구매행동)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide informations on what middle school students know and think about food additives, and their purchase behavior of processed foods containing food additives. The data were gathered by questionaries from 360 students attending in the 3 randomly selected middle schools around Gyeonggi Province. The valid 340 out of 360 questionaries were analysed by SPSS/WIN 12.0. As a result, the middle school students showed low interest in 4 kinds of representative food additives such as synthetic seasoning, artificial sweetener, artificial dye, and synthetic preservative. They thought that the food additives is necessary but not improve the quality of food, and may have harmful effects on health. The students who has mother of university graduate, and taught by text book A showed the highest interest. Most students rarely checked the indication of food additives on the processed food package, and they hardly put any effort to avoid the processed foods containing food additives. According to the results of this study, the students were not aware and did not know about the food additives enough, and needs to be educated more and in detail in home economics class.

Fabricaton of PEMFC separators with conducting polymer composites by injection molding process and evaluation of moldability and electrical conductivity of the separators (전도성 복합재료를 이용한 PEMFC용 separator 사출성형 제조 및 전기전도성 평가)

  • This research aims to develop polymer composites which can be used for PEMFC separators by injection molding process. Considering the moldability and stiffness, we used PPS(Poly(phenylene sulfide)) and PP(Polypropylene) as base resin. In order to improve electrical conductivity and physical properties, we chose glass fiber, carbon fiber, carbon black, and both expanded graphite and synthetic graphite. The 3 type composites are prepared for injection molding of PEMFC separators. and CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) analysis was conducted to optimize injection processing parameters(injection pressure, heat time, mold temperature etc.). We did successfully fabricate the separators by injection molding, and measure the electrical conductivity of the samples by using four point probe device. Conclusively, PP/SG/CB composite showed better both electrical conductivity and moldability than the others.

  • Nanostructured TiN/$TiB_2$/$TiSi_2$ and TiN/$TiB_2$/$Ti_5Si_2$ composite powders have been prepared by mechanochemical reaction from mixtures of Ti, BN, and $Si_3N_4$ powders. The raw materials have reacted to form a uniform mixture of TiN, $TiB_2$ and $TiSi_2$ or $Ti_5Si_3$ depending on the amount of $Si_3N_4$ used in the starting mixtures, and the reaction proceeded through so-called mechanically activated self-sustaining reaction (MSR). Fine TiN and $TiB_2$ crystallites less than a few tens of nanometer were homogeneously dispersed in the amorphous $TiSi_2$ or $Ti_5Si_3$ matrix after milling for 12 hours. These amorphous matrices became crystalline phases after annealing at high temperatures as expected, but the original microstructure did not change significantly.

Preparation of Hard Coating Films with High Refractive Index from Titania Nanoparticles (이산화티탄 나노입자로부터 고굴절 하드코팅 도막의 제조)

  • The titania ($TiO_2$) nanoparticles with a diameter 2?3 nm were synthesized by controlling hydrolysis of titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) in acid solution. Organic-inorganic hybrid coating solutions were prepared by reacting the titania nanoparticles with 3-glycidoxypropyl trimethoxysilane (GPTMS) by the sol-gel method. The hard coating films with high refractive index were obtained by curing thermally at $120^{\circ}C$ after spin-coating the coating solutions on the polycarbonate (PC) sheets. The coating films showed high optical transparency of 90% in the visible range and exhibited a pencil hardness of 2H. Also, the refractive index at 633 nm wavelength of coating films enhanced from 1.502 to 1.584 as the weight content of titania nanoparticles in the coating solutions increased from 4% to 25%.
