  • Torrefaction is a thermochemical process proceeded at the temperature around $250^{\circ}C$ in an inert gas condition. By torrefaction, the hemicellulose portions contained in biomass are broken down to change into the volatile gas which is removed from biomass eventually. The main purpose of biomass torrefaction is to improve the energy density of the biomass to minimize the transport energy consumption, though the flammability can be elevated for transportation. In this study two types of solid biomass fuel, waste wood and rice straw, were torrefied at various temperature range from $200^{\circ}C$ to $300^{\circ}C$ to evaluate the torrefied biomass characteristics. In addition torrefied biomass were tested to evaluate the combustion characteristics using TGA (Thermogravimetric Analysis). After the torrefaction of biomass, the C/H (carbon to hydrogen ratio) and C/O (carbon to oxygen ratio) were measured for aquisition of bio-stability as well as combustion pattern. Generally C/H ratio implies the soot formation during combustion, and the C/O ratio for bio-stability. By torrefaction temperature at $300^{\circ}C$, C/H ratio and C/O ratio were increased by two times for C/H and three times for C/O. The torrefied biomass showed similar TGA pattern to coal compared to pure biomass; that is, less mass decrease at lower temperature range for torrefied biomass than the pure biomass.

  • In this study, we analyzed the combustion characteristics of four different floor covering materials(wood, monorium, laminatedpaper, and varnish-laminated paper) with regard to their ignitibility, thermal characteristics and flame retardancy by using an ignition temperature tester, a dual cone calorimeter, a thermogravimetric analyzer and limited oxygen index, for their fire risk assessment. According to the result, monorium had the lowest ignition temperature of $325^{\circ}C$ and the laminated paper and the varnish-laminated paper promptly ignited before 7s. Further, the wood showed the largest total heat release of $100MJ/m^2$, and the varnish-laminated paper showed the highest peak heat release rate. From the thermogravimetric analysis, it was shown that all specimens underwent rapid weight loss at $300{\sim}400^{\circ}C$. The limit oxygen indices of the laminated paper and the varnish-laminated paper were in the range of 20~21%, while it was 34% for wood. This study enabled us to confirm that wood, laminated paper and varnish-laminated paper have a relatively short ignition time and are easy to burn but they all have low heat release. In contrast, wood showed the lowest fire risk among them and had excellent flame retardancy but with high heat release.

  • In this study, performance evaluation of newly developed technology for the economical and safe removal of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) coming out from electronic devices washing operation and offensive odor induction materials was made. Metal oxidization catalyst has shown 50% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $220^{\circ}C$. Composite metal oxidization catalyst applied in this study has shown that the actual catalysis has started at the temperature of $100^{\circ}C$. Comprehensive analysis on the catalyst property using Mn-Cu metal oxidization catalyst in the pilot-scale unit was made and the removal efficiency was variable with temperature and space velocity. Full-scale unit developed based on the pilot-scale unit operation has shown 95% of removal efficiency at the temperature of $160^{\circ}C$. Optimum elimination effective rates for the space velocity was found to be $6,000hr^{-1}$. The most appropriate processing treatment range for the inflow concentration of VOCs was between 200 ppm to 4,000 ppm. Catalyst control temperature showed high destruction efficiency at $150{\sim}200^{\circ}C$ degrees Celsius in 90~99%. External heat source was not necessary due to the self-heat reaction incase of VOCs inflow concentration is more than 1,000 ppm. Equipment and fuel costs compared to the conventional RTO/RCO method can be reduced by 50% and 75% respectively. And it was checked when there was poisoning for sulfide and acid gas.

  • Cellular automata have been applied to simulations in many fields such as astrophysics, social phenomena, fire spread, and evacuation. Using cellular automata, this study develops a model for consequence analysis of the dispersion of hazardous chemicals, which is required for risk assessments of and emergency responses for frequent chemical accidents. Unlike in cases of detailed plant safety design, real-time accident responses require fast and iterative calculations to reduce the uncertainty of the distribution of damage within the affected area. EPA ALOHA and KORA of National Institute of Chemical Safety have been popular choices for these analyses. However, this study proposes an initiative to supplement the model and code continuously and is different in its development of free software, specialized for small and medium enterprises. Compared to the full-scale computational fluid dynamics (CFD), which requires large amounts of computation time, the relative accuracy loss is compromised, and the convenience of the general user is improved. Using Python open-source libraries as well as meteorological information linkage, it is made possible to expand and update the functions continuously. Users can easily obtain the results by simply inputting the layout of the plant and the materials used. Accuracy is verified against full-scale CFD simulations, and it will be distributed as open source software, supporting GPU-accelerated computing for fast computation.

  • Recently, about 600 cases of marine accidents occur annually in Korea. According to many studies and analyses on occurrence of marine accidents, 70~80% of marine accidents were caused by human factors. Among the human factors, navigation officers' fatigue is very important factor. Although navigation officers' fatigue serves as an important role in marine accidents, there is no method to exactly examine the degree of officers' fatigue. Accordingly, this study analyzed human factors according to types of marine accidents and extracted important five factors affecting navigation officers' fatigue through the questionnaire survey by means of literatures and 5-point scale. In addition, evaluation factors of marine accident risks caused by fatigue factors were divided and structured by using ISM. Lastly, it found out the importance of each fatigue factor drawn by AHP and decided marine accidents that were most highly caused by navigation officers' fatigue in order. At the result, weights were high as sleep time 0.385, stress 0.302, health condition 0.139, rest time 0.099, alcohol and drug 0.074 in fatigue factors, and death and injury 0.328, collision 0.308, grounding 0.195, sinking 0.094, fire accident 0.075 in evaluation factors of marine accident risks. Therefore, the control plan to lower marine accident risks should be prepared on the basis of high weight factors.

  • There is a big risk of bullet impact because military rotorcraft is run in the battle environment. Due to the bullet impact, the rapid increase of the internal pressure can cause the internal explosion or fire of fuel cell. It can be a deadly damage on the survivability of crews. Then, fuel cell of military rotorcraft should be designed taking into account the extreme situation. As the design factor of fuel cell, the internal fluid pressure, structural stress and bullet kinetic energy can be considered. The verification test by real object is the best way to obtain these design data. But, it is a big burden due to huge cost and long-term preparation efforts and the failure of verification test can result in serious delay of a entire development plan. Thus, at the early design stage, the various numerical simulations test is needed to reduce the risk of trial-and-error together with prediction of the design data. In the present study, the bullet impact numerical simulation based on SPH(smoothed particle hydrodynamic) is conducted with the commercial package, LS-DYNA. Then, the resulting equivalent stress, internal pressure and bullet's kinetic energy are evaluated in detail to examine the possibility to obtain the configuration design data of the fuel cell.

  • In recent years, frequent terror or military attack by explosion, impact, fire accidents have occurred. Particularly, World Trade Center collapse and US Department of Defense Pentagon attack on Sept. 11 of 2001. Also, nuclear power plant incident on Mar. 11 of 2011. These attacks and incidents were raised public concerns and anxiety of potential terrorist attacks on major infrastructures and structures. Therefore, the extreme loading researches were performed of prestressed concrete (PSC) member, which widely used for nuclear containment vessel and gas tank. In this paper, to evaluate the blast resistance capacity and its protective performance of bi-directional unbonded prestressed concrete member, blast tests were carried out on $1,400{\times}1,000{\times}300mm$ for reinforced concrete (RC), prestressed concrete without rebar (PSC), prestressed concrete with rebar (PSRC) specimens. The applied blast load was generated by the detonation of 55 lbs ANFO explosive charge at 1.0 m standoff distance. The data acquisitions not only included blast waves of incident pressure, reflected pressure, and impulse, but also included displacement, acceleration, and strains at steel, concrete, PS tendon. The results can be used as basic research references for related research areas, which include protective design and blast simulation under blast loading.
