  • Zirconium(Zr) addition to formulation of HTPB/AP propellants, was shown to be less specific impulse than aluminum(Al) by the theoretical calculation because of the lower flame temperature and higher molecular weight of Zr oxide. It was found that the burning rate was faster with the finer size of Zr and the more content of $2{\mu}m$ Zr the faster burning rate is in HTPB/AP/Zr propellants caused by the more conduction energy transfer from Zr flame to the burning surface. Also the burning rate of HTPB/AP/Zr propellant could be reduced by addition of 150nm Al, depending on AP size distribution in formulation with Butacene and $1{\mu}m$ AP.

  • In this study, the combustion characteristics was studied with various oxidizer in hybrid propulsion system. In this experiments $GN_2O$ and GOX were used as oxidizer, and PE was used as fuel. The combustion behavior was explained by flame temperature with mass O/F ratio, and the use of $GN_2O$ as the oxidizer caused a increase in combustion efficiency with GOX in the same hybrid motor. The mass flow rate of gaseous oxidizer was controlled by the several chocked orifices that have different diameter, and the oxidizer supply range was $0.0138{\sim}0.0427kg/sec$. As result, the empirical relation for oxidizer type was represented by mass flux of solid fuel, it was obtained with mass transfer number, and mass flux of oxidizer.

  • The present study has been motivated by the development of a reliable numerical methodology for simulation of kerosene/LOx coaxial swirl injectors. To deal with thermodynamic non-ideality and anomalies of transport properties pronounced at supercritical pressures, a set of subroutine libraries has been constructed based on the cubic equations of state, and applied to an existing flamelet analysis code. For computational efficiency, two-dimensional axisymmetric RANS formulation with swirl was adopted and validated successfully against an isothermal coaxial swirling jet. For the actual problem with high pressure combustion, however, numerical results show that the RANS models yield excessive production of turbulence probably due to high density gradient magnitude in the vicinity of mixing layer of swirling film flow, and imply strongly further improvement of the turbulence models.

  • A thermal barrier coating (TBC) prevents heat directly transferring from a high-temperature flame to a substrate. The TBC system comprises a top coating and bond coating. TBC technology reduces the substrate surface temperature by about $100{\sim}170^{\circ}C$. In the TBC system, internal stress is generated by the difference in thermal expansion coefficients of the substrate and coating. The internal stress also differs according to the shape and position of the blade. In this study, finite element analysis was performed for different curvatures of coin-shaped specimens, which are commonly used for thermal fatigue tests, and the changes in internal stress of the TBC system were compared. Based on the results, the curvature at which the minimum stress occurs was derived, and the thermal stress was confirmed to increase with the difference between a given curvature and the curvature with the minimum stress.
