This research was conducted to investigate the changes in soil chemical properties of root media as influenced by incorporation rate of a polyacryl amide hydrogel, Stocksorb C. The pH at 5 weeks after treatment in four root media such as peatmoss + vermiculite (1:1, v/v; PV), peatmoss + composted rice hull (1:1; PR), peatmoss + composted saw dust (1:1; PD) and peatmoss + composted pine bark (1:1; PB) containing STSB were in the range from 7.04 to 7.30, which was too high. Elevated incorporation rate of STSB resulted in increase of EC in soil solution of four root media with linear and quadratic response. The concentrations of $NH_4^+-N,\;NO_3^--N,\;PO_4-P^{3-},\;K^+,\;Ca^{2+}and\;Mg^{2+}$ in four kinds of root media increased as incorporation rates of STSB were elevated. But the $NO_3^-$-N concentrations in PS media were lower than those in other there root media tested. The Fe concentrations in PV, PR and PS media increased as incorporation rates of STSB were elevated, but those in PB medium did not show significant different. The concentrations of $Fe^{2+},\;Mn^{2+},\;Zn^{2+}and\;Cu^{2+}$ in PS media were higher than those in other three root media.
The physical properties of horticultural substrate are important for optimal plant growth. The physical properties should be properly maintained during the crop growing season for producing higher yield. This experiment was carried out to evaluate the physical properties of different mixtures from various raw materials as horticultural substrates. The mixtures at the different ratios of peatmoss, perlite and vermiculite subjected to 10:0:0, 8:2:0, 6:4:0, 4:6:0, 2:8:0, 0:8:2, 0:10:0, 0:6:4, 0:4:6, 0:2:8, 8:0:2, 0:0:10, 6:0:4, 4:0:6, 2:0:8, 2:6:2, 2:4:4, 4:2:4, 4:4:2, 6:2:2 and 2:2:6 were prepared and analyzed according to two methods of the European Standardization (EN) and Rural Development Administration (RDA). The optimum range of physical properties of a specific horticultural substrate can be predicted using physical-property-triangle. This triangle can also be used to convert a physical property from the EN method to that from the RDA method. Results showed that the mixture at a ratio of > 60% peatmoss, in most cases, is in the range of optimum physical condition for plant growth. We conclude that the developed physical-property-triangle can be suitable to suggest the optimum ratios of horticultural substrates used in this study.
The experiment has investigated the effects of blending rate of waste rockwool in nursery media on growth of Marygold 'Yellow boy' plug seedlings. A commercial plug medium containing 10% zeolite, 10% vermiculite, 5% perlite, 10% peatmoss and 65% cocopeat was used as the control, and the other media compounded with 10% of zeolite, vermiculite, perlite and peatmoss and 10, 30, and 50% of waste rock-wool. There was not significant difference in germination rate ot Marygold between treatments. Plant height, number of leaves, stem diameter and leaf area were higher in commercial plug medium and compound nursery media containing 50% of waste rockwool than 30 or 10% of waste rockwool. Fresh weight and dry weight of shoot and root increased in the treatment of commercial plug medium and the medium of 50% waste rockwool than 10 and 30% of waste rockwool. These results suggested the possibility of utilization of waste rockwool for medium components of plug seedlings.
In this study we investigated the suitability of horticultural main organic root substrate materials (peatmoss, coir) for the development proper root substrate for working with bulb onion transplanter. We investigated seedling sprout ratio, growth and characteristics (bulk density, root substrate cohesion) those are suitable for mechanical transplanting by mixing with inorganic materials(red clay etc.). Although both seedling growth and root substrate bulk density were similar in peatmoss and coir based root substrates, we found that peatmoss mixing had higher root substrate cohesion compared to coir mixing. We assume that higher cohesion properties of peatmoss based root substrate will give more weight of root part during mechanical transplanting of young onion seedlings in the field. Because of this, we suggest that peatmoss is the appropriate ingredient for developing root substrates for working with bulb onion transplanter.
This research was conducted to determine physical properties of four root media, peatmoss + vermiculite (1:1, v/v; PV), peatmoss + composted rice hall (1:1, PR), peatmoss + composted saw-dust (1:1 : PS) and peatmoss + composted pine bark (1:1 PB), as influenced by incorporation rate of Stock-sorb C (STSB). Each root medium containing STSB was packed in 22 cm diameter plastic pot and the physical properties were determined at 5 weeks after packing. As incorporation rate of STSB were elevated, total porosity increased in PV, PS and PB media with statistical differences at $5{\%}$ level. Those also resulted in increase of container capacity in PS and PB media, but statistical differences were not observed in PV and PR media. Elevated incorporation rate of STSB in PV, PS and PB media resulted in increase of air space with statistical differences. Trends in air space of the three root media showed a linear as well as quadratic responses to STSB contents of media. As incorporation rate of STSB increased, more water was retained in four root media at the soil moisture tension of 4.90 kPa, 9.81 kPa, 29.4 kPa and 1.5 MPa. The amount of water retained in PS medium was the highest at the moisture tension at 29.4 kPa and 1.5 MPa followed by PB, PR and PV medium. These results indicated that elevation of incorporation rate of STSB to various root media increased moisture retention capacity, but did not increase the available water holding capacity.
This study was carried out to investigate applicability of Spent Mushroom Media(SMM) as horticultural nursery media. After the mushroom has been harvested, the SMM contains a lot of organic material, different microorganism and high density of mushroom hypha. The pH, phosphate and exchangeable cation concentrations of SMM of Flammulina velutipes were higher than those of any other treatment. The CEC and $NH_4-N$ were the highest in SMM of bottle-cultivated oyster mushroom (Pleurotus ostreatus). Bacteria and fungi showed the highest density in SMM of Flammulina velutipes. Most dominant bacteria were Microbacterium sp., Rhodococcus sp. and Agrobacterium sp. in SMM of Flammulina velutipes and Bacillus sp., Pseudomonas sp., Curtobacterium sp. and Microbacterium sp. in that of Pleurotus eryngii. The SMM contained high density of mushroom hypha that inhibited germination of seed and growth of young seedlings. Therefore, composting process of the SMM is indispensible to decline of vitality of mushroom hypha. The SMM of Flammulina velutipes with 0~30% vermiculite showed high germination rate in red pepper and chinese cabbage seeds. SMM of Pleurotus eryngii with 20% vermiculite showed 100% germination rate in red pepper seeds, but chinese cabbage seeds nearly failed to germinate with 30% vermiculite. The growth of red pepper was increased according to increasing mixture ratio of vermiculite. Accordingly, we concluded that SMM of Flammulina velutipes contained 0~30% of vermiculite can be used to horticultural growth bed for red pepper.
The objective of this research was to secure the fundamental information in changes of soil physical properties as influenced by the compaction of root media during container filling. Three root media were formulated by blending peatmoss (PM) with expanded rice hull (PM + ERH, 8:2, v/v), carbonized rice hull (PM + CRH, 6:4) and ground and aged pine bark (PM + GAPB, 8:2). Based on the optimum bulk density, the amount of root media filled into 6.0, 7.5, 8.5, 10.5 and 12.5 cm were adjusted to 90, 100, 110, 120, and 130%, then the changes in total porosity (TP), container capacity (CC), and air-filled porosity (AFP) were measured. The TP decreased significantly as the packing amount of three root media were elevated in all sizes of container. The TP did not show significant differences among the root media in small sizes of containers, but showed significant differences when sizes of containers became larger. As packing amount of three root media were elevated, the CCs in all sizes of containers were decreased. The PM + CRH had the lowest CC among three root media in containers smaller than 8.5 cm, but had the highest CC in those larger than 10.5 cm. These results indicated that the decreases in CC were influenced by the sizes of containers as well as kinds of root media. The elevation of packing amount in three root media diminished significantly the AFP. The AFP in PM + GAPB medium was two times as high as those of PM + ERH or PM + CRH when equal packing densities were applied in all sizes of containers. As the container sizes became larger in three root media, the extents in decreasing of CC were distinct than those of AFP. Above results indicate that elevation in packing amount of three root media decreased significantly the TP, CC and AFP, but these were influenced differently by sizes of containers and kinds of root media. The results would be useful for expectation in the changes of physical properties in various sizes of containers filled with peatmoss based root media.

This experiment was carried out to investigate optimum conditions of coir-based substrates for the red pepper plug seedlings. Eleven different coir based substrates prepared by mixing of coir, vermiculite, rice hull, perlite, zeolite, mixed at different ratios were tested. The physical and chemical properties of the substrates were analyzed by the CEN (European committee for standardization) method. Fresh and dry weights of shoot and root, leaf area, root length, and T/R ratio (dry shoot weight/dry root weight) were determined at 55 days after sowing. The results showed that the growing media CRZ 8(coir:rice hull: vermiculite=8:1.9:0.1) and CVSZ 6(coir:silver vermiculite: zeolite=6:3.9:0.1) can successfully be used for pepper plug seedlings judging from dry weight and T/R ratio of the plug seedlings. The optimal range of total pore space, water volume, air volume, easily available water content and water buffering capacity of the coir-based growing substrates for pepper plug seedlings were in the range of 92~94%, 52~60%, 32~43%, 18~21%, and 0.9~8%, respectively.
