  • Purpose: This paper aims to develop an asphalt pavement system with reduced cracks, structural stability and waterproofing at sub-zero temperature conditions. Method: Under various temperature conditions, SIS polymer asphalt, normal asphalt, and guss asphalt were tested for adhesion strength of the binder and deformation strength of the mixture. Result: The adhesion strength of asphalt binder was higher in SIS polymer asphalt than that of normal asphalt and guss asphalt. The deformation strength of the asphalt mixture was almost the same as that of SIS polymer asphalt and normal asphalt. The energy absorption of the SIS polymer asphalt mixture was relatively higher than that of the normal asphalt mixture and the guss asphalt mixture. Conclusion: The maximum load of the SIS polymer asphalt mixture was lower than that of the guss asphalt mixture. However, in sub-zero temperature conditions, sufficient energy absorption was secured by stable load reduction. Therefore, it is expected to improve the durability of asphalt pavement by reducing the occurrence of microcracks with stable fracture behavior.

  • A basic objective is the preparation and surface studies of supported molten salt catalysts because molten salts can stay as the liquid phase in the range of the ordinary reaction temperature. Many kinds of metal salt mixtures for the formation of molten salt phase are appliable but CuCl and KCl were selected in this study because Cu is considered catalytically reactive in many reactons. The loading of the molten salt was selected as 25 vol% of the total pore volume of ${\gamma}-alumina$ to provide reasonable exposed surface area. The surface structure of catalysts containing molten salts in the ${\gamma}-alumina$ was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). CuCl and KCl were added into the ${\gamma}-alumina$ using concentrated hydrochloric acid solution by the impregnation technique. The surfaces of the prepared catalysts before and after heat treatments were compared and they suggested that the heat treatment of catalysts helped the formation of molten-salt although the surface compositions of CuCl and KCl were not uniform.

  • Permanent Deformation is one of the most important load-related pavement distresses in asphalt pavements. The Korean Pavement Design Guide currently being developed adopted the mechanistic-empirical approach and needed the pavement distress prediction models. This study intends to develop the model for prediction of permanent deformation in the asphalt layer and estimate the pavement performance. The objectives of this paper are to figure out the factors affecting the permanent deformation and then develop the permanent deformation prediction model for asphalt mixtures. The repeated triaxial load test was Performed on the 19mm dense graded asphalt mixture with variation of temperature and air void. Results from the laboratory tests showed that temperature and air void in asphalt mixtures have significantly influenced on the factors in prediction model. The permanent deformation prediction model for 19m dense grade asphalt mixtures has been developed using the multiple regression approach and validated the proposed permanent deformation prediction model.

  • The autoignition temperature (AIT) is important index for the safe handling of flammable liquids which constitute the solvent mixtures. This study measured the AITs and ignition delay time for Benzene and n-Hexane system by using ASTM E659 apparatus. The AITs of Benzene and n-Hexane which constituted binary system were $583^{\circ}C$ and $240^{\circ}C$, respectively. The experimental AITs of Benzene and n-Hexane system were a good agreement with the calculated AITs by the proposed equations with a few A.A.D. (average absolute deviation).

  • The research was performed to evaluate the cracking resistance characteristics of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) using indirect tensile strength test and fatigue tests. Indirect tensile tests were conducted to estimate the indirect tensile strength at variable temperatures($10^{\circ}C\;and\;20^{\circ}C$). Fatigue tests were also carried out using 500kgf, 400kgf, and 300kgf of dynamic loads, and the fatigue life (Nf) for each mixture was measured. Indirect tensile strength of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt pavement was about 90% of conventional 13mm dense-graded asphalt mixture. Fatigue life of cold-mixed reclaimed asphalt mixture was 70%, 55%, 30% (for 500kgf, 400kgf, 300kgf of load level, respectively) of the conventional one.

  • Both melting temperature and enthalpy of MBCA/DMTDA mixtures were measured as a function of DMTDA compositions using DSC. The thermal properties of polyurethane elastomer samples prepared with MBCA, DMTDA, and 40/60 MBCA/DMTDA mixture as curing agents were also observed using TGA. MBCA and DMTDA showed good miscibility over the entire composition range, exhibiting individual DSC melting peaks. Peak temperatures were non-linearly reduced as DMTDA concentrations increased, being approximately $60^{\circ}C$ in the case of the 40/60 MBCA/DMTDA mixture. Furthermore, melting enthalpy of the mixture was calculated as 3.8 J/g, which was only 4.3% compared to 87.3 J/g of MBCA. Based on these results, crystallization of the mixture was considered to occur very slowly, and the fluidic gel-state of the mixture was visually confirmed to be maintained over 5 days at room temperature. Thermal decomposition of polyurethane elastomer prepared with 40/60 MBCA/DMTDA curative started at about $190^{\circ}C$, which is similar to that observed for DMTDA, only except decomposition behavior over higher temperature of $400^{\circ}C$.

  • Warm-mix asphalt(WMA) technology has been developed to allow asphalt mixtures to be produced and compacted at a significantly lower temperature. The WMA technology was identified as one of means to lower emissions for $CO_2$ and has been spread so quickly in the world. Recently, two innovative WMA additives has been developed to reduce mixing and paving temperatures applied in asphalt paving process in Korea. Since the first public demonstration project in 2008, many WMA projects have successfully been constructed in national highways. In 2010, the WMA field trial was conducted on new national highway construction under Dae-Jeon Regional Construction Management Administration. The two different WMA loose mixtures(WMA and WMA-P) and a HMA mixture were collected at the asphalt plant to evaluate their mechanical performance in the laboratory. The Third-scale Model Mobile Loading Simulator(MMLS3) was adopted to evaluate rutting resistance and moisture damage under different traffic and environmental conditions. In this study, plant-produced WMA mixtures using two WMA additives along with the conventional hot mix asphalt(HMA) mixtures were evaluated with respect to their rutting resistance and moisture susceptibility using MMLS3. Based on the limited laboratory test results, plant-produced WMA mixtures are superior to HMA mixtures in rutting resistance and the moisture susceptibility. The WMA additive was effective for producing and compacting the mixture at $30^{\circ}C$ lower than the temperature for the HMA mixture.

  • The crystal growth rate of benzene from benzene-cyclohexane mixtures at a cylindrical layer crystallizer was determined from the slope of the line of correlation between operating time and layer thickness. The thickness of crystal layer was obtained from the amount of crystal deposited on the cooled wall surface of the crystallizer. The crystal growth rate was related with the degree of subcooling, which was defined as the difference between temperature of melt and that of growing crystal surface. The linear crystal growth rate for binary mixtures was proportional to the second power of the degree of subcooling. Equation model which was obtained from data through the rate of heat and mass transfer in the crystallizer and thus can tell crystal thickness and surface temperature of crystal layer according to the elapsed time was presented and successfully correlated to the experimental data. For the benzene-cyclohexane mixtures contains 5wt% and 10wt% of cyclohexane, the comparison of experimental data with calculation using model equation was done for crystal thickness corresponding to the various cooling temperatures.

  • This paper dealt with modification of effective crack length model (ECM) by adding Poisson's ratio term to evaluate fracture toughness of asphalt concrete which varies its material property by temperature. The original ECM model was developed for solid materials, such as cement concrete, and Poisson's ratio of materials was not considered. However, since asphalt concrete is sensitive to temperature variation and changes its Poisson's ratio by temperature, it should be taken into consideration to know exact fracture property under various temperatures. Four binders, including 3 polymer-modified asphalt (PMA) binders, were used to make a dense-grade asphalt mixture and 3-point bending test was peformed on notched beam at low temperatures, from -5oC to 35oC. Elastic modulus, flexural strength and fracture toughness were obtained from the test. The results showed that, since Poisson's ratio was considered, the more accurate test values could be obtained using modified ECM equation than original ECM. PMA mixture showed higher stiffness and fracture toughness than normal asphalt mixture under very low temperatures.
