  • Due to the use of polymeric materials in construction materials, the fire combustion gases that occur in the fire are various. The one of combustion gases, HBr is measured to evaluate the toxicity of the combustion gases in the FTP Code Part 2, Standard NES 713 and Standard BS 6853. According to the MSDS, Inhalation of HBr gas especially cause burn, respiratory dysfunction, headache, etc. The people who are exposed to 50ppm of HBr gas, very irritant gas may also frequently result in both immediate death and post-exposure deaths due to pulmonary complications. In this paper, we conduct a research on the combustion toxicity of HBr gas hazardous test which is motility measurement of the mice exposed to the HBr standard gas comparing the biological analysis result.

  • The spawning host selection and adaptive characteristics in life history were investigated for Sarcocheilichthys nigripinnis morii which has similar habit of spawning with acheilognathine fishes. The fertilized eggs of the species were found in the mantle cavity of Corbicula papyracea and C. fluminea among the bivalves collected from same locality, meaning the species specific host selection for the spawning. We considered that the differences in the status of expanding egg membrane after hydration, fewer number of eggs settled into the mantle cavity and having eleutheroembryo with developed organ would be some evidences of specific reproductive strategy for this species. But the status of developed surface blood circulation was thought to be a compensation for the parasitism. The pigmentation of melanopore delayed to late embryo and the spot on the caudal region was a characteristics of this species appeared in the early life history.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of diaphragmatic breathing on activation of lumbar paraspinal muscles of normal healthy people. Diaphragmatic breathing may affect activation of trunk muscles. The assumptions are as follows: the crural diaphragm attatches to the lumbar vertebrae from L1 to L3, the voluntary downward pressurization of the diaphragm increases intra-abdominal pressure, and this increases the stiffness of the spine. Methods : Sixty male college students ranging 19 to 34 years were screened and % maximal voluntary contraction(% MVC) of trunk muscles on the four positions of back extension exercise was compared during the pre and post of inspiration of diaphragmatic breathing. Results : 1. % MVC of right and left erector spinae had the statistically significant difference between pre and post inspiration of diaphragmatic breathing in the dynamic right arm and left leg extension position(p<0.05). 2. % MVC of right and left erector spinae had the statistically significant difference between pre and post inspiration of diaphragmatic breathing in the dynamic left arm and right leg extension position(p<0.05). 3. % MVC of right and left erector spinae had the statistically significant difference between pre and post inspiration of diaphragmatic breathing in the static lying prone extension position(p<0.05). 4. % MVC of right and left erector spinae had the statistically significant difference between pre and post inspiration of diaphragmatic breathing in the static lying on prone position(p<0.05). Conclusion : This study will be used as the purpose of data collection of lumbar paraspinal muscles on diaphragmatic breathing and be introduced as the new therapeutic intervention for management of patients with back pain.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of abdominal muscle strengthening exercise on abdominal muscle strength and respiratory function in stroke patients. Methods : The subjects were 14 stroke patients (10 males, 4 females) hospitalized at W rehabilitation hospital in Busan City and randomly assigned to 7 exercise groups and 7 control groups. Exercise was performed in combination with an upper and lower extremity pattern of proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation. Measurements of abdominal muscle strength and respiratory function were made before intervention and 4 weeks after intervention. Abdominal muscle strength was assessed using a digital manual dynamometer, and respiratory function was assessed by spirometry. The collected data were analyzed with a paired t-test and independent t-test and the significance level was set as α =.05. Results : The results showed that applying abdominal muscle strengthening exercise to stroke patients showed a significant increase in abdominal muscle strength and a significant difference between groups (p<.05). Maximal-effort expiratory spirogram (MES) readings were significantly increased in forced vital capacity (FVC), and forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1), in the exercise group, and there were a significant differences between the groups in terms of FEV1 (p<.05). Slow vital capacity (SVC) was significantly increased in vital capacity (VC), tidal volume (TV), inspiratory reserve volume (IRV), and expiratory capacity (EC), and there were significant differences between the groups in VC, TV, expiratory reserve volume (ERV), EC, and inspiratory capacity (IC) (p<.05). Conclusion : Abdominal muscle strengthening exercise was effective in the abdominal muscle strength of stroke patients, and it was confirmed to have a positive effect on the enhancement of respiratory function. Therefore, it seems that exercise programs for stroke patients with respiratory weakness should include abdominal muscle strengthening exercises.

  • The purpose of study intends to investigate effects of repetitive work and workload for body while wearing firefighting protective clothing in hot conditions and to provide the basic data for the safety of firefighter. The experimental temperature is WBGT $30^{\circ}C$ and the work intensity is 3, 9 METs. The experiment is processed 15 minutes (Ex1), 15 minutes rest (Rest), 15 minutes (Ex2) in order of time. A comparative experiment was carried out for firefighting school students(9 persons; $24.3{\pm}0.71$ years old) wearing firefighting protective clothing. When workload is increased from 3 METs to 9 METs, mean skin temperature change (33.3%), tympanic temperature change (242.9%), heart rate (36.2%), respiration rate (53.9%), RPE (81.6%), thermal Sensation (20.8%), weight loss (60.0%), glucose (-4.4%), lactate (41.7%) are statistically significantly higher. As a result, it is considered that repetitive work and workload have a strong effect on the body when wearing firefighting protective clothing in hot conditions.

  • Once it is diagnosed, immediate surgical extirpation is desirable for treating left ventricle myxoma that's accompanied with stenosis of the left ventricle outflow tract. This is because this condition may potentially induce fatal complications such as cerebral infarction or myocardial infarction that's triggered by myxoma embolus, or even sudden death due to coronary malperfusion. An 18-year-old male with the chief complaint of NYHA class II exertional dyspnea was found to have a $4{\times}3\;cm^2$ sized mass on transthoracic ultrasonography, which was shown to move down the left ventricle outflow tract on the systolic phase. The mass was immediately extirpated by incision of the left ventricle; the mass was finally diagnosed as a myxoma. The patient was discharged on at the 10th day postoperatively without any complications. On the 22-month follow-up observation made at the out-patient clinic after discharge, there have been no noticeable, significant changes seen on physical examination or the cardiac ultrasonography.

  • Patients with congenital pericardial defect display few symptoms and this is an unusual disease, so it is generally found incidentally in most of the cases. In some cases, symptoms such as chest pain are found due to partial cardiac herniation. We report here on a 14-year-old girl with dyspnea and chest pain that started during physical activity 3 months before the hospital visit. She was diagnosed with herniation of the left atrial appendage with a partial pericardium defect and she was treated with an operation.

  • Background : Pulmonary rehabilitation, called pulmonary rehab or PR, is a broad program that helps improve the well-being of people who have chronic (ongoing) breathing problems. Purpose : The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the effects of the upper abdominal exercise and balloon blow-up on the abdominal muscle strength and Respiratory ability for 20's adults. Method : Recruited Subjects were healthy students attending H university. Twenty-one subjects who agreed to participate in this study were randomly assigned to 3 groups; I group applied upper abdominal exercise, IIgroup applied balloon blow-up, III group applied both upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups. Upper abdominal muscle exercises was applied supine position and $30^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$ in the upper body lift braced for about 3 seconds, and balloon blow-ups was performed 10 times a day. The exercise programs were performed three times a week for 5 weeks. Results: After 5 weeks of exercises, all three groups were comparable with abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability. Subjects in upper abdominal exercise group, balloon blow-ups group, and upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups group had significantly increased the average of abdominal muscle strength(p<.05) The statistical comparison among the groups indicated that there was a signigicant increase in respiratory ability. In comparison of abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability, there were no significant differences among 3 groups. Conclusions: These findings suggest that upper abdominal exercises and balloon blow-ups may have a significant impact in abdominal muscle strength and respiratory ability.

  • Ebstein's anomaly is an unusual and a rare congenital cardiac malformation but characteristic abnormality of the development of the tricuspid valve, right atrium and ventricle. The characteristic findings are a displaced tricuspid valve with a septal leaflet spiralling into the right ventricle. The surgical correction is variable and are left unsolved problem in surgical treatment of anomaly. Between January 1988 & December 1995, we experienced 11 cases of Ebstein's anomaly and associated cardiac anomalies are ASD, PFO, ASD with VSD. The typically displaced tricuspid valve leaflet was found in all cases. In the NYHA functional classification, three were in class II, seven were in class III, and one was in class IV. Nine patients were operated by tricuspid annuloplasty & plication with Danielson's method and two patients were done by tricuspid valve replacement with plication, and in all cases associated anomaly was corrected. Postoperatively, five patients suffered from complication - low cardiac output syndrome, arrhythmia and wound infection. There was no operative mortality and the postoperative courses were relatively good conditions with more improvement of symptoms.
