A Study on Analysis of Freshwater-saltwater Interface in the Aquifer around Hwajinpo Lagoon on the Eastern Coast of Korea (동해안 화진포 석호 주변 대수층 내 담수-염수 경계면 분석에 관한 연구)

  • Hwajinpo Lagoon, located on the eastern coast of Korea, is a unique environment where freshwater and saltwater are mixed. Systematic management of the lagoon is required because it is a biodiversity-rich and area of high conservation value. The existing environment of the lagoon was evaluated by identifying the distribution of the groundwater level and groundwater flow characteristics. In addition, hydrogeochemical fluctuations were analyzed to determine the effect of seawater intrusion into the aquifer. The results demonstrate that the freshwater-saltwater interface is distributed throughout the aquifer and rises when water of the lagoon evaporates due to prolonged periods of low rainfall and high temperature, thereby increasing the possibility of seawater inflow through groundwater. As for the ionic delta properties (difference between the measured and theoretical concentration of mixed waters), it was estimated that the cation-exchange and precipitation reactions occurred in the aquifer due to seawater intrusion. The ratio of seawater mixed at each point was calculated, using oxygen isotopes and chloride as tracers, resulting in an average of 0.3 and a maximum of 0.87. The overall seawater mixing ratio appears to be distributed according to the distance from the coast. However, some of the results were deviated from the theoretical expectations and reflected the characteristics of the nearby aquifers. Further research on seasonal changes and simulation of seawater intrusion mechanisms is required for specific analysis.

Application of Zooplankton Index for Korean Lake Health Assessment; Verification of Community Index for Lake Assessment Using Multi Metric (호소생태계 건강성 평가를 위한 동물플랑크톤 MMI의 국내 적용 연구)

  • Recently, Korean government has introduced Multi Metric Indices (MMI) using various biocommunity information for aquatic ecosystem monitoring and ecosystem health assessment at the national level. MMI is a key tool in national ecosystem health assessment programs. The MMI consists of indices that respond to different target environmental factors, including environmental disturbance (e.g. nutrients, hydrological and hydraulic situation of site etc.). We used zooplankton community information collected from Korean lakes to estimate the availability of candidate zooplankton MMI indices that can be used to assess lake ecosystem health. First, we modified the candidate indices proposed by the U.S. EPA to suit Korean conditions. The modified indices were subjected to individual index suitability analysis, correlation analysis with environmental variables, and redundancy analysis among indices, and 19 indices were finally selected. Taxonomic diversity was suggested to be an important indicator for all three taxonomic groups (cladoceran, copepod, rotifer), on the other hand, the indices using biomass for large cladocerans and copepods, while the indices using abundance were suggested for small cladocerans and rotifers.

The Development and Application of Multi-metric Water Quality Assessment Model for Reservoir Managements in Korea. (우리나라 인공호 관리를 위한 다변수 수질평가 모델의 개발 및 적용)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a Multi-metric Water Quality Assessment (MWQA) model and apply it to dataset sampled from Paldang and Daechung reservoir in 2008. The various water dataset used to this study included 5 year data sets (2003${\sim}$2007) in Korean reservoirs which were obtained from the Ministry of Environment, Korea. In this study, suggested MWQA model has 4 metrics that were composed of 4 parameters such as chemical, physical, biological, and hydrological variables. And, each of the variables attributed total phosphorus (TP) concentration in water, secchi depth (SD) measure in water, chlorophyll-${\alpha}$(Chl-${\alpha}$) concentration in water and the ratio of inflow of water into lakes and efflux of water from lakes, input/output (I/O). First, we established the criteria for trophic boundaries. The boundary between oligotrophic and mesotrophic categories was defined by the lower third of the cumulative distribution of the values. The mesotrophic-eutrophic boundary was defined by the upper third of the distribution. Second, each metric was given by a point-oligo=1, meso=3, eu=5. And then, obtained total score from each metric was divided 5 grade-Excellent, Good, Fair, Poor, and Very poor. As the results of applying the proposed MWQA model, the Paldang reservoir obtained "Fair" or "Poor" grade and Daechung reservoir obtained "Excellent" or "Good" grade. The suggested MWQA model through these procedures will enable to manage efficiently the reservoir. And, more studies such as metric numbers and attributes should be done for the accurate application of the new model.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the water pollution problems brought about by the construction of eco-friendly waterfront space through the physical model experiment including water quality consideration. Due to the lack of water supply into the artificial ponds and canals, the water quality problems such as eutrophication, odor and so on can be occurred. There have been many numerical models on such phenomena but limited studies using physical test due to the difficulty in the verification of physical interpretation of the study area. In this study, a prototype model that is not affected by the dimensionless parameters was carried out, where unpolluted water is mixed into the contaminated water to reduce the concentration of nutrients. In addition, this study also attempt to find the optimal configuration of the flow induction machines using the scale model which will evaluate and verify the effectiveness of the enforcement methods to maintain the water quality objectives.

Characterizing Fluorescence Properties of Dissolved Organic Matter for Water Quality Management of Rivers and Lakes (하천 및 호소 수질관리를 위한 용존 자연유기물질 형광특성 분석)

  • Fluorescence measurements of dissolved organic matter(DOM) have the superior advantages over other analysis tools for applying to water quality management. They are simple and fast and require minimal pretreatment of samples. Fluorescence index($F_{450}/F_{500}$), synchronous spectra, and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices(EEM) of various DOM samples were investigated to discriminate autochthonous/allochthonous composition, protein-like fluorescence, fulvic-like fluorescence, humic-like fluorescence, terestrial humic-like fluorescence by comparing among the real DOM samples of different origins with the help of literature. The samples used included standard purified DOM, lake, river and wastewater treatment effluent. The relative distribution of various DOM composition was derived from the ratios of each fluorescence region. The results were very consistent with those expected from the sample properties. Allochthonous and terrestrial humic-like fluorescence were more prominent in the samples with abundant soil-derived DOM components. In addition, the protein-like fluorescence property was more pronounced in the samples where strong algal or microbial activities were expected. It was also shown that the ratio of protein-like/terrestrial humic-like fluorescence obtained from synchronous spectrum and fluorescence EEM could be used as an indicator for the evaluation of wastewater treatment on the downstream water quality of rivers and for the prediction of the degree of algal/microbial activities in lakes. It is expected that the results of this study will provide the basic information to develop the future water quality management techniques using DOM fluorescence measurements.

Similarity of Zooplankton Community Structure among Reservoirs in Yeongsan-Seomjin River Basin (영산강, 섬진강 수계 내 주요 저수지에 대한 동물플랑크톤 군집 구조의 유사성 분석)

  • Our study was based on the long-term surveys with respect to the major reservoirs located in the Yeongsan and Seomjin river basins. A total of 45 survey sites have been surveyed four times a year from 2008 to 2017. We identified 166 zooplankton species, including 127 rotifers, 26 cladocerans, and 13 copepods. Mean population density and species number of small reservoirs were higher than those of mid and large reservoirs. Considering outliers exceeding the 90th percentile between species occupancy and mean abundance, 10 of 11 habitat generalists were rotifers, and Bosmina longirostris was the only cladoceran. Habitat specialist consisted of three species of rotifers and emerged from one to three survey sites. According to the modularity results, it was found that the survey sites covering the entire river basins were characterized into five groups, which was similar to the classification by maximum water surface areas(MWSA). The result of the eigenvector centrality showed that the size of MWSA had a greater impact on the similarity of zooplankton community structure between reservoirs than the difference in distance between reservoirs. In the case of survey points in near dam or estuary bank of Juam and Youngsan reservoirs, modularity class were separated from other internal survey points of those. Given that the zooplankton interactions may contribute to freshwater functions more than species diversity. These topological features provide new insight into studying zooplankton distribution patterns, their organization and impacts on freshwater-associated function.

  • In this paper, remote sensing is used to estimate trophic state which is primary concern in a lake. In using remote sensing, this study estimated trophic state not with conventional method such as regression equations but with classification methods. As europhication is caused by the extraodinary proliferation of the algae, chlorophyll a and transparency are applied to remote sensing data.. Maximum Likelihood Classification and Minimum Distance Classification which are kinds of classification methods enabled trophic state to be confirmed in a lake. These are obtained as the result of applying remote sensing to classify trophic state in a lake. Firest, when we evaluate tropic state in a large area of water body, the application of remote sensing data can obtain more than 70% accuracies just in using basic classification methods. Second, in the aspect of classification, the accuracy of Minimum Distance Classification is usually better than that of Maximum Likelihood Classification. This result is caused that samples have normal distribution, but their numbers are a few to apply statistical method. Therefore, classification method is required such as artificial neural networks which are not influenced by statistical distribution. Third, this study enables the trophic state of water body to be analyzed and evaluated rapidly, periodically and visibly. Also, this study is good for forming proper countermeasure accompanying with trophic state progress extent in a lake and is useful for basic-data.

Development and Application of a Computer Program for the Analysis of Heat Transfer and Fluid Flow of Water Body: Lake and Primary Clarifier (水體 熱流動 數値解析 프로그램 개발 및 응용 : 湖沼, 일차침전조)

  • A computer program is developed in order to investigate the fluid flow and heat ransfer of a water body in a 2-D vertical rectangular coordinate. The specific purpose of this study is to obtain a physical insight of several fluid flow problems which occur in a lake and the water and wastewater treatment facility like a primary clarifier. The performance of computer program developed is successfully evaluated by the comparison of other two experimental and computational data in open literature : the first comparison is made against the numerical data associated with the cooling water discharge and the other is numerical and experimental works for the primary clarifier of Sarina City at Ontario. Further, the computer program is applied to investigate the feature of lake flow, say lake turnover, and 2-D vertical channel flow in terms of temperature, wind velocity and flow rate, etc. The computational results appear to be physically acceptable and consistent. The computer program developed in this study shows the possibility of the viable tool to figure out the flow characteristics of water reservoir.

  • 조류는 계절별 기상 및 수질 조건에 따라 규조, 녹조, 남조의 발생 및 천이가 이루어지는데 최근 기후 변화로 인해 출연종 별 발생 및 천이의 시기 또한 빨라지고 있다. 이 중 남조류의 경우 초여름에 발생하여 급격한 증식으로 대발생되어 녹조현상을 야기하고 이는 해당 수역의 생태계 파괴, 그 이외에도 사회적, 경제적, 환경적인 측면에서 많은 문제를 유발한다. 하천·호소의 조류의 발생과 거동에 대한 이해와 효과적인 대응책 마련을 위하여 현상에 대한 모니터링이 선행되어야 하지만 기존 조사방식은 점, 선 단위의 간헐적 측정을 통해 진행되고 있어 많은 인력과 시간이 필요로 하고 있는 실태이다. 현재 이에 따른 문제 해결을 위한 하천·호소의 원격탐사 기법을 이용한 조류의 발생 및 거동에 대한 모니터링 연구가 많이 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 초분광 영상을 이용한 원격 탐사 모니터링을 위한 선행연구를 위해 400-1000 nm에서 NIR(visNIR)파장을 분석할 수 있는 초분광 카메라 CORNING사의 micro HSITM 410 shark와 영상 흔들림 보정을 위한 DJI사의 로닌-MX를, 이용하여 현재 녹조류, 남조류 5종의 배양액과 방사보정을 위해 99% 반사율의 반사판과 함께 촬영하여 영상을 수집하였다. 수집된 영상을 통하여 방사보정 및 해당 Base 제거를 통한 조류의 분광 정보 추출 과정을 통해 조류별 분광 정보를 추출, 분석하여 해당 조류의 분광특성을 파악하고 기초 라이브러리를 구축하여 제시함으로 추후 하천·호소에서의 초분광 영상 기반 원격탐사 모니터링에 적용하고자 한다.

Apprehensive Streams Determination Method Using Discharged Pollution Load in ChungjuDam Watershed (배출부하량 자료를 활용한 충주댐 유역의 우심하천 결정 방법)

  • 임의의 지점에서 하천의 수질은 해당 하천으로 유입되는 모든 지역의 오염원에 대한 영향을 받으므로 상류 소유역에 전체에 대한 복합적인 평가가 동반되어야 한다. 본 연구에서는 배출부하량 자료를 활용하여 충주댐 호소의 수질에 대한 상류 유역의 영향성을 평가하여 우심하천을 결정하는 방법을 제안하고, 충주댐 유역의 우심하천을 결정하였다. 충주댐 유역을 Korean Reach File (Version 3)에서 제공하는 182개 세유역으로 구분하였으며, 각각의 소유역에 대한 Straem Total Load (STL)를 산정하였다. 여기서, STL은 세유역의 하천으로 유입하는 모든 상류 세유역을 포함하는 단위면적당 배출부하량으로 명명하였다. 충주댐 본체가 포함된 세유역 (충주댐2-3)을 목표지역으로, 대상 수질 항목은 총인(TP)으로 선정하였다. 충주댐2-3 세유역의 STL은 0.0029 kg/ha/day이며, 상류 세유역의 STL이 목표 지역보다 높으면 댐호소 수질에 대한 영향이 큰 세유역으로 구분할 수 있다. 각각의 세유역에 대한 STL을 산정하면 장평천4 0.0191 kg/ha/day로 가장 높았으며, 주천강시점3 0.0089 kg/ha/day, 주천강상류1 0.0088 kg/ha/day 등의 순으로 나타났다. 또한 충주댐2-3의 STL보다 높은 세유역은 68개, 주요 우심하천은 장평천과 제천천 그리고 주천강 등으로 분류되었다. 또한 STL을 활용하면 상류 세유역에서 하류 세유역까지 배출부하의 이동 경향이 나타나므로 (최상류에서 높은 오염부하를 배출하여도 하류로 이동하며 낮은 오염부하를 배출하는 세유역과 합쳐지면 댐 호소의 수질에 대한 영향이 적은 것 등) 세유역의 배출부하 또는 단위면적당 배출부하로 우심지역을 평가하는 방법과의 차별성을 가지고 있다.
