Automatic Prostate Segmentation from Ultrasound Images using Morphological Features (형태학적 특징을 이용한 초음파 영상에서의 자동 전립선 분할)

  • In this paper, we propose a method of extracting prostate region using morphological characteristics of ultra-sonic image of prostate. In the first step of the proposed method, the edge area of the prostate image is extracted. The histogram of ultra-sonic image is used to extract base objects to detect the upper edge of prostate region by altering the contrast of the image, then, the lower edges of the extracted base objects are connected by using monotone cubic spline interpolation to extract the upper edge. Step 2, Otsu's binarization is applied to the region under the extracted upper edge of the prostate ultra-sonic image to extract the lower edge of prostate. In the last step, the upper and the lower edges are connected to extract prostate region and by comparing the extracted region of prostate with the one measured manually, the result showed that the morphological characteristics of prostate in ultrasonic image can be utilized to extract the prostate region.

A Car License Plate Recognition Using Colors Information, Morphological Characteristic and Neural Network (컬러 정보 및 형태학적 특징과 신경망을 이용한 차량 번호판 인식)

  • In this paper, we propose a new method of recognizing the vehicle license plate using color space, morphological characteristics and ART2 algorithm. Morphological characteristics of old and/or new style vehicle license plate among the candidate regions are applied to remove noise areas using 8-directional contour tracking algorithm, then follow by the extraction of vehicle plate. From the extracted license plate area, plate morphological characteristics of each region are removed. After that, labeling algorithm to extract the individual characters are then combined. The classified individual character and numeric codes are applied to the ART2 algorithm for the learning and recognition. In order to evaluate the performance of our proposed extraction and recognition of vehicle license method, we have run experiments on 100 green plates and white plates. Experimental results shown that the proposed license plate extraction and recognition method was effective.

Computing of the Fuzzy Membership Function for Karyotype Classification (핵형 분류를 위한 퍼지 멤버쉽 함수의 처리)

  • Many researchers have been studied for the automatic chromosome karyotype classification and analysis. For the automatic classify the each chromosome which is the image in microscope, it is necessary to process the sub-procedure, ie. image pre-processing, implementing karyotype classifier. The image pre-processing proceeded the each chromosome separation, the noise exception and the feature parameter extraction. The extracted morphological feature parameter were the centromeric index(C.I.), the relative length ratio(R.L.), and the relative area ratio(R.A.). In this paper, the fuzzy classifier was implemented for the human chromosome karyotype classification. The extracted morphological feature parameter were used in the input parameter of fuzzy classifier. We studied about the selection of the membership function for the optimal fuzzy classifier in each chromosome groups.

Anatomy of the Korean mistletoe and their haustorial features in host plants (한국산 겨우살이과 식물의 형태와 기주별 흡기 특징)

  • Anatomical features of both leaves and stems of the four mistletoes in Korea (Viscum album var. coloratum, Korthalsella japonica, Loranthus yadoriki, L. tanaka) and of their secondary haustorial structure within several host plants were investigated. Among the four mistletoes, there were diagnostic characters of the anatomy of leaves and stems which enabled us to distinguish the four taxa. Leaves were observed to have three distinct characters including unifacial or bifacial leaves, the number of vascular bundles in the midveins, and the level of development of sclerenchyma cells. There were four diagnostic characters of stems: overall morphology of stems in transverse view, degree of cuticle development, arrangement of vascular bundles, and features of the sclerenchyma and pith. In order to determine secondary haustorial traits, the research focused on the seven host plants of L. yadoriki and on the five host plants of K. japonica. The following features were found to be important: presence or absence of an aerial runner root, the shape of the haustorial strand and flange, the degree of penetration into host tissues, and their development of shaft in transverse view, the development both of secondary haustorial cells and short tracheid in hyphae. Korthalsella japonica and L. yadorki were clearly distinguished by these characters. The secondary haustorial forms in each host were somewhat different, due to varying degrees of development in the strength of the host plants' wood. However, qualitative characters like the final position of the secondary haustorial penetration into host tissues and the development of short tracheid cells were not only affected by the degree of development of the host plants, but also useful for the systematic study.

Notes on Three Marine Algal Species from Korea (한국산 해조 3종에 대한 주해)

  • 한국산 해조 3종, Umbraulva olivascens (P.J.L. Dangeard) G. Furnari, Bryopsis minor Womersley, Sargassum polycystum C. Agardh에 대한 형태학적 및 분류학적 주해가 제시된다. Umbraulva olivascens는 뚜렷한 올리브 체색, 파상형 연변, 엽체의 구멍 및 조하대 서식처에 의해 특징지어진다. Bryopsis minor는 작은 조체, 모든 방향에서 많은 분지, 기부에 잘록함이 없는 선형의 소지, 두드러진 가지 흔적을 결여하는 축, 뚜렷한 중심 피레노이드를 갖는 엽록체, 주축과 비슷한 길이의 가지 및 뚜렷하지 않은 주축을 갖는 것이 특징적이다. Sargassum polycystum은 조체 모든 부분에서 나는 원통형 내지난형의 돌기, 가시가 있는 뚜렷한 중륵을 갖는 전연 내지 다소 거치연의 잎과 드물게 나는 기낭을 갖는 것으로 특징지어진다. 이 3종은 여기서 한국 해조상에 처음 기록된다.

Study on Dongkyung-i Dog Characterized as Anury and Brachyury (무미와 단미로 특징되는 동경이에 대한 연구)

  • Until now, there are no scientific studies for Dongkyung-i(DKI) dog, which is recently called as Deng-Kyun. This study is aimed to investigate the characteristics of DKI. According to visiting studies, DKI is an active, live and muscular dog. The dog is willing to announce the approach of strangers friendly. As the results of morphological studies, DKI is medium sized and the average weight is 22.6 kg. Its coat has mainly yellowish brown color and short hair. Morphologically, the dog showed vestigial tail and muscular and sturdy pelvic limbs. As the results of radiological studies, DKI is characterized as the absence of coccygeal vertebrae or the coccygeal agenesis. We concluded that DKI may be a Korean native canine breed characterized as short or non-tail dog. Also, we suggested that this characteristic dog is valuable to develop as a Korean native breed.

Comparison of the morphology and distribution of the genus Megaleranthis Ohwi with those of its relative genera (Ranunculaceae) (모데미풀속과 근연속들의 형태 및 분포 비교 (미나리아재비과))

  • To elucidate the taxonomic status of the genus Megaleranthis Ohwi, a monotype in Korea, its distribution and morphological characteristics were studied and a cluster analysis was performed. The cluster analysis showed that Megaleranthis was separately clustered from Trollius and Calathodes. Megaleranthis is morphologically different from Calathodes Hook.f. et Thomson in having petals, and from Trollius L. in having an involucre instead of a caulescent leaf under the flower and follicles with simple veins. The three genera above are distributed independently within Asia, although they can be found together at the boundaries where their distributions overlap: Trollius and Calathodes occur together between the Sichuan and Yunnan provinces in China, and Megaleranthis and Trollius can both be found on the northern edge of the Korean Peninsula. From both a morphological and a distributional viewpoint, Megaleranthis should be recognized as an independent genus different from both Trollius and Calathodes.

  • We reviewed the taxonomic identity and morphological characteristics of Cardamine manshurica (Kom.) Nakai based on its original description and type specimens. Cardamine manshurica, with its smaller flowers and siliques and earlier flowering season, is distinguished from the closely related species C. flexuosa With. This species-level difference is additionally supported in a phylogenetic tree constructed using nrDNA ITS sequences. Taken together, we therefore propose that C. manshurica is a distinct species. The scientific name 'Cardamine manshurica (Kom.) Nakai' is accepted.

Mechanical Properties and Morphology of Epoxy/Polyamide/DDS/2E4MZ-CNS Reactive Blends (에폭시/폴리아미드/DDS/2E4MZ-CNS 반응성 블렌드의 형태학적 특징 및 기계적 물성)

  • The thermal and mechanical properties and morphology of epoxy/polyamide/DDS/2E4MZ-CNS reactive blends with various amounts of polyamide were investigated. The amount of polyamide was 10, 20, and 30 phr and 2 phr of catalyst was added to the blend to cure at $180^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. By adding the catalyst, 2E4MZ-CNS, to the blend, the cure reaction occurred at a lower temperature. From the SEM images, it was found that the boundary of separated-phase was unclear and the phase was co-continuous. Without the catalyst, however, the boundary of separated-phase was clear. The control of cure temperature and morphology could be achieved by using a proper catalyst and consequently the mechanical strength increased by 20% compared to the blend without the catalyst due to the strong interaction between epoxy matrix and phase-separated polyamide at the interface.

AN ELECTRON MICROSCOPIC STUDY OF INTRAEPITHELIAL NERVES OF ORAL MUCOSA OF RATS DURING AGING (증령에 따른 백서구강점막 상피내신경의 전자현미경적 연구)

  • 구강점막 각 부위의 지각신경의 특징은 근년 생리학적 연구의 중요한 대상이 되어왔다. 일반적으로 생리학적 기능은 연령과 더불어 감소된다는 소견이 구강점막에서도 적용된다고 하나 이에대한 형태학적 지견을 중심으로 볼 때 그러한 감소가 순전한 기능저하의 결과인지 혹은 지각신경의 해부학적 형태변화에 의한 것인지에 대해서는 분명하게 알려진 것이 없다. 본 논문은 Spraque-Dawely와 Fischer 344 두종의 숫자 20마리를 이용하여 각종을 6개월과 30개월의 연령으로 2군으로 나누어서 연령에 따른 구강점막내 신경섬유와 신경종말의 전자현미경적 특성의 변환을 관찰하고, 단위면적당 분포하고 있는 신경요소의 변화를 정량해 보았던바 다음과 같은 결과를 얻었다. 1. 구강점막에 분포하는 신경섬유와 신경종말의 전자현미경적 형태에 있어서는 젊은백서와 늙은백서 사이에 인정할 만한 질적 차이가 없었다. 2. 연령증가에 따라 구강점막의 상피내 간격에 존재하는 신경요소는 전반적으로 감소하였다. 3. 이와 같은 감소는 신경섬유보다 신경종말의 경우 더욱 현저하게 나타났다.
