  • As the viscosity of the blood increases, the blood becomes more sticky and difficult to flow, so the possibility of thrombosis increases and the probability of ischemic cerebral infarction increases. The importance of measuring blood viscosity has recently been emphasized for the prevention of circulatory system diseases, and the need for a viscometer capable of easily and accurately measuring blood viscosity has emerged. In this study, the measured values of a viscosity standard solution and an artificial blood by a parallel-plate viscometer ARS-Medi were compared with the those by Ares-G2 of TA instrument, which is internationally recognized for its accuracy and reliability. The viscosity of N44 standard solution, which is a Newtonian solution, was almost perfectly matched between the two instruments at all shear rates. In the case of an artificial blood, which is a non-Newtonian solution, the measured values between the two instruments showed a difference of about 10% at the lowest shear rate 1 rad/s; however, at a clinically significant shear rate of 10 rad/s or higher, the measured values between them were consistent within the error range. We expect that ARS-Medi, a newly developed parallel-plate viscometer for blood, using disposable plates, will be very useful in clinical practice as it improves the convenience and hygiene of blood viscosity measurement.

  • The demands for specially trained hemodialysis nurses are increasing as the population requiring maintenance hemodialysis expands. However, there has been no standardized training program for hemodialysis nurses in South Korea. The study was conducted to develop and evaluate a hemodialysis nurse educational program (HNEP). The effects of education using the HNEP were assessed by levels of hemodialysis-specific knowledge, self-efficacy and satisfaction. A total of 25 registered nurses participated in the HNEP which consists of 20 week education (classroom theory for 10 weeks and clinical practice for 10 weeks) between April and September, 2011. Knowledge levels were compared before and after the HNEP using paired t-test. Self-efficacy and satisfaction levels were also evaluated after the program using a scale of 1-5, 5 being the highest and 1 being the lowest. Knowledge levels were significantly increased after the HNEP (Mean=13.96 vs. 17.80, t=-7.748, p=<.001). Self-efficacy and satisfaction levels with the program were high, $3.90{\pm}0.42$ and $4.02{\pm}0.77$, respectively. These findings suggest that the HNEP improved hemodialysis-specific knowledge, and levels of self-efficacy and satisfaction with the HNEP were reasonably, among the participants.

  • The possibility of biomaterials prepared from natural polymer as a skin substitute was evaluated by measuring biocompatibility. Biodegradable films were prepared by solution blend method in the weight ratio of chitosan for the purpose of useful biomaterials. These films were inserted in the back of rat and their biodegradability was investigated by the film weight and hematology as a function of time for the biotransformation. The result of rat test showed that medium, high viscosity chitosan induced some suspects of inbiocompatibililty in the tissue by foreign body reaction 48 and 72 hours after implantation. Also, we prepared the official burn ointment which is made by low viscosity chitosan. This burn ointment was covered on the skin wound of artificial burn and their effect of healing was investigated by the evaluation of the naked eye and hematological change as a function of time. The result of rats test showed that burn ointments made from chitosan was effective reduction of inflammation than negative group.

  • The circulatory system is closely related to the inter-relationship between the anatomy of the heart and blood vessels, and the fluid dynamic properties of blood. The physical properties of blood, which affect blood flow, are called hemorheologic factors. Hemorheologic factors, such as blood viscosity and erythrocyte aggregation, are influenced mainly by hematocrit. A higher hematocrit level results in an increase in blood viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, which impedes the circulation itself, and tissue oxygenation. An excess of serum ferritin causes injury to vascular endothelial cells and erythrocytes via oxygen free radicals. In addition, an excess of blood can aggravatee the adverse effects of the hemorheologic parameters and induce atherogenesis, microcirculatory disturbances, and major cardiovascular events. A preventive and therapeutic approach with a phlebotomy or blood donation has been stimulated by the knowledge that blood loss, such as regular donations, is associated with significant decreases in key hemorheologic variables, including blood viscosity, erythrocyte aggregation, hematocrit, and fibrinogen. Major cardiovascular events have been improved in regular blood donors by improving blood flow and microcirculation by decreasing the level of oxidative stress, improving the hemorheologic parameters, and reducing the serum ferritin level. Confirmation of the positive preventive and therapeutic effects of blood donations on cardiovascular disease by a well-designed and well-controlled Cohort study may be good news to patients with cardiovascular disease or at risk of these diseases, as well as patients who require a transfusion.
