  • A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of water management and application of slaked lime and wollastonite on Pb uptake of rice in a Pb added soil. The soil was adjusted to 0, 150, 300 and 600 ppm of Pb concentration. The slake lime was applied at the equivalent amount of lime requirement with 150kg/10a adding and the wollastonite, 200kg/10a, respectively. The results obtained were as follows. 1. The lead contents in leaf stem and brown rice increased with increasing the soil Pb content and the ratio of Pb/(Ca+Mg) equivalent in soil but they showed no influence on yields. 2. The application of lime and wollastonite reduced Pb content in plant. 3. The lead content in plant was higher in intermittently irrigated treatment than in submersed irrigation. 4. The soil pH was increased in the order of lime, wollastonite and control. 5. $1N-NH_4$ OAC soluble Pb content in soil was higher in the submersed irrigation than in the intermittently irrigated and was higher in wollastonite application treatment than the slaked lime after harvesting.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the agronomical and physicochemical properties of five newly bred sugary lines in YARI (Yeongnam Agricultural Research Institute) that developed from the cross of sugary and Hwayeongbyeo, Hwasambyeo and Seomjinbyeo. Culmlength of newly bred sugary lines were longer than that of Nampyeongbyeo as $84.2{\sim}99.3cm$. However the weight of 1,000 grains and yield were lower than that of Nampyeongbyeo by two to three times. According to physicochemical properties, most of the new bred sugary lines showed low contents of amylose and mineral compare to normal varieties. And all sugary lines showed much higher amount of the sucrose and glucose contents compare to Nampyeongbyeo. Especially the sucrose content of newly bred sugary line, 55413, was 5 times higher than that of Nampyeongbyeo nevertheless, fructooligosaccharide and isomaltooligsac charide were not detected. The amylopectin constitution of sugary lines showed more chairs of DP (Degree of Polymerization)<12 but fewer chains of DP $13{\sim}24$ compare to Nampyeongbyeo. Newly bred sugary lines were lower viscosity in RVA (Rapid Viscosity Analysis).

  • Radio-tracer experiments on the Sr-90 absorption by rice and soybean from a sandy-loam soil of pH 6.35 treated with 5.2 and 31.2Bq Sr-90 per g-soil were carried out through pot cultivations. Sr-90 absorption rates of both crops increased till the mature stage when the rates were about 1.0%. Concentrations in their whole tops, however, decreased or changed little as they grew. Sr-90 concentrations in plant parts of both crops increased with the increase of those in soil. Soil-to-plant transfer coefficients of Sr-90 for rice and soybean at mature stages ranged, on the dry weight basis, from 0.07(unpolished seed) to 3.67(lean and from 0.86(seed) to 9.26(leaf), respectively. Only the unpolished rice seed showed a significant difference in the coefficient with 0.17 in 5.2Bq treatment and 0.07 in 31.2Bq treatment. Sr-90 retention rates of the upper 15cm soil after crop harvests were about 80% Sr-90 absorptions had no effect on the plant growth and yield of the crops.

  • To investigate the varietal variations in absolute density of milled rice grain and its relations with other grain characters, the 235 rice varieties which consist of 30 Tongil type rices, 72 Japonica rices and 133 Indica rices were tested on grain size, volume, hardness, chalkiness and 1000 grains weight of brown rice, ADV, amylose content, starch composition on SEM and absolute density of milled rice grain using completely ripened grains. Average absolute density of milled rice grain was 1.496g / cm$^3$ in Tongil type rices, 1.506g / em in Japonica rices, and 1.500g / cm$^3$ in Indica rices. It was correlated positively with days to heading and grain hardness, and negatively with chalkiness, volume, grain weight and grain length of brown rice. Regression analysis indicated that grain volume and weight were the major characters affecting the density. However, since the absolute density of milled rice grain did not show great varietal variations it might not seem important as one of the characters contributing to the grain yield, while it could be a factor affecting the grain quality because there were definite varietal differences even though small. The microscopic feature of starch composition on SEM revealed differences between clear and chalky parts of the grain in shape and compactness of starch composition but did not discriminate between high and low-density grains.

  • Recently, peoples are greatly concerned with global temperature change because global warming can be a potential serious effect on agriculture production such as yield reduction and poor grain quality. On the other hand, it can bring some beneficial effects through twice cultivation of rice in temperate region. In order to overcome this situation, we developed extremely early-maturing rice 'Milyang255' which heading date was similar with 'Jinbuolbyeo'. Based on agronomic characteristics of 'Milyang255', it has very short stature as 65 cm of culm length and slightly lower spikelets number per panicle compared with that of 'Jinbuolbyeo'. However, the grain appearance, palatability and other items were better than those of 'Jinbuolbyeo' in panel test of cooked rice. The milled rice yield of 'Milyang255' is 3.94 MT/ha at the early transplanting. Especially, its grain filling rate was higher and faster than Jinbuolbyeo and the head rice ratio in milled rice was also higher. Thus, 'Milyang255' can efficiently reduce the growth duration of rice cultivation and also be useful material for research on twice cultivation of rice in Korea.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to find out the effects of water management, slaked lime and wollastonite on growth and Cu uptake of rice at Cu added soil. The soil was adjusted to 0, 50, 100 and 200 ppm concentration of Cu. The application amount of slaked lime was the lime requirement plus 150 ㎏/l0a and wollastonite 200 ㎏/10a, respectively. The copper concentration in soil which reduced yield significantly was 133.1 ppm for submersion and 136.8 ppm for intermittent irrigation. The application of lime and wollastonite reduced Cu content in brown rice as well as increased rice yields compared to that of no lime. The copper content in plant was increased with increasing soil Cu concentration, however, reduced with submersion and application of slaked lime, and increased with increasing the ratio of Cu/Ca+Mg equivalent in soil.

  • A pot experiment was conducted to find out As uptake and critical levels affecting yield loss of rice plant. The arsenic was added to two soils of sand loam and loam in the from of $Na_2HAsO_4,\;7H_2O$ at different As concenterations of 0, 10, 25, 50, 100, 150 ppm, respectively. Rice yields significantly decreased with increasing soil As levels and the critical As levels in soils were estimated to be 6.79 ppm for loam and 2.75 ppm for sandy loam. Yield components also decreased with higher soil As levels and the weight of 1000 grains showed the highest significant correlation with As level in soil. Most of arsenic was retained by the roots and a small amount of arsenic was translocated to the shoots. Arsenic content in plant organs was high in the order of root>stem>leaf blade>leaf sheath>brown rice. The number of sterillized grains also increased with higher As level in soil and it was much higher in sandy loam than in loam.

  • For the increase of protein content in the straw without detrimental effect on grain yield by top dressing with various nitrogen amount IR667 (Suwon 214) and Jinheung were grown under field condition and the value as feed was investigated by chemical analysis on the harvested straw. 1. In straw IR667 was higher in crude protein, crude fiber and ash, and lower in total carbohydrate than Jinheung, and crude fat content was not much different. 2. The contents of crude protein and total carbohydrate increased with nitrogen level but crude fiber, crude fat and ash decreased, and those phenomena were clear in IR667. 3. The content of phosphorus in straw decreased with increasing nitrogen level more clearly in Jinheung. 4. Protein content was greatly increased in brown rice and calcium content tended to decrease with the increase of nitrogen application amount. 5. Country mean of crude protein in straw was 4.06% much lower than that of mixed wild grasses and forages (6.71) but crude protein could be increased above that of wild sources, moreover with grain yield increase by the improvement of nitrogen fertilizer application.

  • To compare the morphological and cultural characteristics of Cordyceps militaris, forming conditions of artificial fruiting body production were investigated in this experiment. The stroma shapes of artificial fruiting body were confirmed to club and/or stick. However, both shapes were same color as a orange. Perithecia of stroma was semi-egg shape and was ranged from $30{\sim}90{\times}90{\sim}130\;{\mu}m$ and it's asci was narrowly cylindric. Ascospore of perithecia was belong to filiform and multiseptate. The conidia of C. militaris was centurally grown and shaped with globose, long clavate type, floccose, centrally raised during anamorph stage. When it was cultured between glass and PP bottle, production of artificial fruiting body, pinheading ratio and total yield were higher in PP bottle. The optimum illumination was 1,000 lx for the those production. The culture medium of barley, wheat and hulled rice showed higher artificial fruiting body compared to that of silkworm. Pinheading and yield of it's isolates was decreased at more than three subsequent transculture.

  • "Hwangkeumbora" is a new japonica rice cultivar developed from a three way cross of Jinbubyeo, Odaebyeo, Fukei126 at Honam Agricultural Reaserch Institute (HARI), NICS, RDA, in 2006. This cultivar has about 110 days growth duration from transplanting to harvesting under Korean climate condition. The milled kernel of "Hwangkeumbora" is translucent with non- glutinous endosperm. Amylose content of "Hwangkeumbora" is about 19.3%. "Hwangkeumbora" has better palatability of cooked rice compared with "Odaebyeo" and shows high resistant reaction to the blast, but susceptible to major diseases and insect pests. The milled rice yield of "Hwangkeumbora" is about 5.37 MT/ha under the standard fertilizer level of the ordinary transplanting cultivation. "Hwangkeumbora" would be adaptable for ordinary transplanting in northern plain, mid-mountainous, southern mountainous of Korea.
